    wow thanks Mark for posting this brilliantly useful video. watching you dismantle the Tyros, has made me a little more confident in doing a DIY repair on my Technics KN5000 and Yamaha PSR 2700, trouble is, I can recall taking apart a Synth years ago to find most of the control buttons dropping out,,took me hours getting them all back in place. don't think the thing ever worked properly after that repair hahaha. I'm considering attempting the repair myself because sadly there's no longer anyone local that takes on repairs, I remember years ago there were loads of repair technicians able to repair my Hammond organ..take care and thanks again for a great video..Ronnie

    A clock fell off the shelf above my Tyros 5 and broke a key. I bought a replacement key from Tyros Parts UK (great company to deal with, and good communication) for around a fiver. This video really helped me in getting inside the case without any problem. Took about half an hour to replace the key. This type of video is great - lets have more!

    I also used the screw line-up technique while opening a laptop . Another technique can be when we have to take out lots of cables completely, that before taking photos we can put labels on them. So that when reassembling we can pick right cable and save time.

    Thanks Mark, very informative, and your speaker connection idea is brilliant, so simple really you would wonder why Yamaha hasn't already thought of it.

      Thanks Keith. I think I may just do the job myself on Jasons Tyros and show it working with no cables on the speakers. may be biting off more than i can chew but im sure it would not be too difficult. Best wishes.

    great video Markus! there is only one thing which i like to say:
    i think its really great that they haven't put the touch screen on this device, and i wish they don't do that ever! simply because there are thousands of blind and vision impaired users who can't use the touch screen! when you read the Korg's forum you'll see how many users are unable to work with their instruments because of this!!!!
    i recently made something using a 3D printer which can be placed on the korg Kronos touch screen with more than 600 cells so the can count them, and press what they're looking for... well that works but still it takes ages and ages to remember or right down what each cell does in an specific page tab!!!!!!!! and then it takes ages to actually find the cell you want to push since every time you need to count all the rows and columns to find the right cell number that you're looking for!!!!!!!!
    why the hell don't they put something like Voice over or some screen readers in these devices? at least make your Editor Softwares accessible for god's sake!!!!!!
    great video Markus!

      pouya khoshgoo Hello, I thought the Tyros 5 was going to be touchscreen but I do agree with you that it was better kept as is, The Kronos is ok but everything is so small on the screen because they have crammed too much into a small screen size. I often have to lean over and look real close for what I am trying to press and I have good eyesight. Its a pity they could not use a capacitive screen the size of the ipad mini and add assistive zoom like Microsoft has on their software, as the Kronos works with a Intel Atom computer I think they could have easily put a video out like the tyros 4 and the ability to use a standard usb mouse like the Roland Fantom.

    Fun. I like the speakers wiring as it is...because... I can use them on other instruments.
    Touch screen replacement/repair is expensive. I like the screen as it...it is simple.

    Haha. How time has changed. I remember when a 1MB memory SIMM sold for over $100. A Gigabyte of memory was a Gigafantasy. All 45 circuit boards in my CS-80 would now fit into that tiny upper leftmost chip on the Tyros motherboard.

    More details in my other comment, but i've identified the processor on sight, it's Hitachi SH-4-DSP SH7731. You're more right than you imagine with a joke about being a spare part from Mazda! These things were developed for satnavs and headunits. If you want more details, the closest thing to public documentation is the reference manual for SH7780, this should be basically the same but the one here has an integrated graphics card.

    Just so you know, Renesas is the new name (since 2010) for NEC (Nippon Electronics Company) semiconductor products in Japan. It is the world's largest manufacturer of microcontrollers and the second largest manufacturer of application processors. Also, just in case you come across some electronic components with the name Wavefront on them, this is the new name for what was known as Alesis semiconductors. As well as Freescale is the new name for Motorola microprocessors division. Things move fast, and change often in the competitive world of semiconductors. BTW, great teardown !

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Renesas also inherited the Hitachi line of high-performance microcomputer processors from the 90ies, the SuperH. SH7731 is a dual-issue dual-pipeline super-scalar processor with floating point support, an additional DSP and a display controller with VGA and LCD connectivity, running at 333 MHz, and is a member of SH-4 family. It comes in a package marked R8A77310D333*. It's fully compatible with Linux, Windows CE, QNX, and a selection of real-time operating systems.
      As opposed to ARM architecture of the time, the instruction set is more compact (16-bit per instruction), which is also why it always loads and executes two instructions at a time as a 32-bit architecture, which also comes with little quirks like capability to execute another instruction that comes after a jump instruction while taking a jump, something the compilers counter with reordering or following a jump with a no-op instruction. The pipeline assignment is flexible enough to usually maintain dual execution. I wager a guess, this instruction set has at the time inspired the ARM Thumb instructions, though those are implemented differently and don't carry over the quirks or the performance improvements.
      I actually quite like the Super-H processors.
      As to being a spare part from a Mazda car... well yeah, SH-4 were used in Japanese satnavs and headunits.

    Hi I have a real problem with my Tyros 4 . I need to be able to record my guitar DI into the Tyros 4 hard drive separately from the mic input. I have tried the AUX input and find that the signal plays through my Tyros but will not record. Would it be possible to reword the aux input to the hard drive recorder ?
    Any advice on a rewire would be appreciated

    Hi... I'm into DIY as well and my Tyros3 came without speakers and albeit I'm using a stereo unit, I would like to use the Preamp and crossover inside the Tyros3. Unfortunately, their service manual doesn't show the Pwr Amp inside the Sub-woofer speaker . Is there any chance to get these details, because I have got enough DIY to copy their speaker system.

    I used to service IBM / Lenovo laptops, the way to do it when you get into complicated multi layer multi part units is, you take an A4 piece of paper and push them through the paper in map of the location matching the unit or part you are working on. Then you get another A4 bit of paper for the next bit, like if your getting into the case of some thing and then taking several more screws.
    You definitely need this tip when having +20 screws or more. Nothing worse than putting a complete unit back as perfectly as you can doing every screw hole. And then finding you have 2 screws left outside of the unit.

    I recommend "Jeweler's 30X loupe" and "Headband Jeweler 10X Magnifier Magnifying Glass Loupe" on eBay. Both are cheap (and slightly tacky), but I use them _constantly_. For the price you can't lose. Free shipping from Hong Kong. Absolutely perfect for checking and soldering those tiny parts.

  • @PileOfEmptyTapes
    @PileOfEmptyTapes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A bit of an apples to oranges comparison on the expansion modules there. The Yamaha job contains flash ROM (presumably NOR flash), the "standard memory module" is DDR-something SDRAM. I am not aware of any mass-market ROM expansions, so Yamaha had to roll their own. A low-volume item like this (let's face it, the market for keyboards in that price range is rather finite) is invariably going to be costly, even more so when it's actually still being assembled somewhere in Japan.

  • @SOPM2007
    @SOPM2007 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly, you could easily build a keyboard that can at least offer what the latest Tyros can but for one third of the price. But Yamaha can allow themselves to set these monster price tags. However, I love Yamaha keyboards, and will never trade my own one :-)

      Hi DJ Ice, I think the touchscreen is a very nice interface and can make selecting things much simpler than having to press buttons here & there, Im sure they will add it to the tyros 6 or 7, just another reason to upgrade your instrument and make the old one obsolete again.

    As for 12:18, simple: pize....in my opinion the "my-disply-is-bigger" thing doesen´t work anyway for synths, as the engine is the thing you´re going for, not the display size. A good example is kurzweil. As we all got an ipad (synth guys simply had to have an ipad just for iMini) simply connect this via WiFi (or a dedicated snap-in) to the synth and you got one of the best displays around with very good touch responce as well. And it makes the synth cheaper anyway (casio did this in its XW-P1 ; *very* underrated synth, as it can modulate its own step sequencer by itself: awesome!)

    Never heared of Renesas quick search you find a company in japan that make chips for automotive industry and such as well the main processor might be a MPU of theirs so you're right it is automotive part industry and probably used to orchestrate controllers, keyboard, display etc. Think the main sound processing are Yamaha proprietary chips. Love the teardowns ;)

    Comment on the speaker connection is true ... but not all Tyros users want/need the optional speakers. I use my Tyros with a powered 400 watt mixer and large (12" woofer) PA speakers. I had the PA system for other reasons so it made sense to just use it with the Tyros (and the other keyboards I have).
    As for the cost of a Tyros ... each potential user will have to make their own decision as to the value... some years ago, I 'lusted' after a Yamaha organ that cost $20,000 (1988 price) that was well beyond what I could afford. At the time, I thought -- most of its features were software-- so eventually they'll have something more affordable. Indeed, the Tyros has most of those features at a price (in 2014 dollars) that made sense.

    Hello markusfuller! I have got a tyros 4 and it gives the error that the hard drive is not connected. What could possibly be the reason?

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Diyon Peresh Hello Diyon, our tyros 4 required a disk format when it arrived from new though not everyone new one needs this. if yours has developed a problem over time there is a small drawer caddy under the right side of the tyros under the usb stick area. there will be a couple of screws and then you can pull the caddy out that has the hard drive on it. careful there is one cable that looks like a mini usb. this is connected to a small circuit board next to the hard drive. pull this out and push it back in incase its a little loose, i think there is a cable grip on it to stop this falling out. but that may be the problem if the tyros has been moved around a lot. also with the caddy open turn on the tyros and get close to the hard drive and you should hear the hard drive spin. if not there may be a problem with the hard drive but it is only a standard computer drive so you can replace it easily. dont worry your main yamaha software is on the microchips, the hard drive holds your personal registration setups & samples & a few other things but if it is replaced you will have to reformat it and load your samples and personal setups again. but the tyros will still work as though it is a new machine. I hope this helps. you could contact Steve Marsden who is technical advisor at Yamaha the UK phone number is 01908-366700. Best of luck.

      @metalmachine974 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Diyon Peresh Check if it is Inserted properly and that the cables are Plugged in properly or it may be a hard drive issue, if none of these work you might want to Replace it

      Those are just the satellite speakers. There is also a dedicated floor standing subwoofer not shown which also contains the power amp and connects to the Tyros through a multi-pin plug, so you can't just plug any old speakers in those two sockets and expect them to work. It's just an adapted version of their YST-MS50 computer speakers. 50W RMS - more than loud enough for home use or ok for a small gig or as monitors for a larger gig. The cables let you swivel the speakers 360 degrees, but are prone to breakage.

    Dear Marcus,
    Thank you very much for these 'teardown' videos.
    I have a Tyros 1 from 2004. The C5 key is dead, most probably because of the dust and humidity conditions of Bodrum, where I live.
    I want to open the instrument and clean the rubber band under the key.
    Have you ever disassembled a Tyros 1?
    The service manual tells me to unscrew many (unnecessary) screws to open the case. Is it really necessary?
    I would be very very happy, if you could give me an idea about it.

    Dear Markus
    Would it be ok to plug a Tyros 4 in a Power Generator Such as a Honda Generator. or an APC Smart UPS. How much does the Voltage have to be? Thanks

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThatsPart OfMyPlan Hello, It should be OK to use a UPS power supply for your Tyros, The Honda generator may cause undesirable spikes and I would not really gamble on using it with my Tyros unless I checked the smoothness of the power output first. The Voltage on the Tyros should be 220Volts for the UK and Europe including Australia and 110Volt for the United States.
      Though Im not absolutely sure if the power supply inside automatically switches between either of these voltages as many modern keyboards will use either voltage without problems. Just check next to the IRC (kettle type power socket) on the back as it will tell you what voltage range it requires. Best wishes from Markus

Problem is I really am afraid they will listen to the idiots and have a touchscreen on the next Tyros, destroying what was once a beautiful and very logical interface.

    I know it is unusual question, but I thought may be useful for some too. I am partially color blind so I do not see well the difference of RED/GREEN("yellow-side") LED lights on my PSR s750. So, I am thinking to change LED diodes for RED/BLUE combination. Do you think ordinary 5mm dual color blue/red LED can be used and how difficult would it be to access/solder? Tx

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ivan, I do not think you will find room for the 5mm less as there is little space under the buttons to place them. the less under the buttons are surface mount less though you can get them in any colour. they are a little bit awkward to solder. they are about 2mm X 3mm

      Thanks for the prompt reply. Any idea if it would it be possible and the source to buy the original size LEDs (2x3mm as you estimate)? Are the original ones square? Sorry to bother you, but it may safe me the effort (and risk :)) to open the keyboard up. Tx

      @markusfuller  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello its a one piece flat surface mount RGB led. 4 pins and about 3or4mm square. but there is enough room under the display to add larger RGB leds or even the single 3mm devices. its just awkward to move the LCD displays out of the way to make room to work.

    The reason the Korg Kronos uses standard PC RAM cards is because... shocker: there -is- a standard PC in there! An Intel Atom based motherboard, bog standard with no special modifications. The custom boards with the front panel interface and audio stuff is connected through serial if I remember correctly.
    The OS is (of course) Linux, with a slightly customized kernel to run the synth engine in kernel space (and also to reserve much more RAM for this too). You can actually hack the bejeezus out of the thing and customize both hardware as software as the protection system to prevent this is laughable on these things.
    TLDR: I want one. For science of course :)

    Interesting teardown, but you clearly have no experience in Yamaha synth motherboard design. Please don't say that the Renesas is the main processor chip! This thing is just a microcontroller, and the main job is done by YSS chips on the left. The four chips you see on the bottom left are the waveform memories, and the two big BGA chips you see near of them are the one doing all the work. Yamah calls them "SWP" for Standard Wave Processor, and they are 32 bits DSP. They perform all signal processing, from wave generation to effects.

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you are quite correct that i “clearly have no experience in yamaha synth motherboard design”. The reason for that is I dont work for yamaha anymore and i didn’t get to work on the motherboards so do not know every chip used and its workload purpose, but thankyou for your added information as its always useful to somebody.

    Using micro usb to connect internal HDD is a really strange decision, I wonder why they decided to adapter board instead of placing sata controller on motherboard and using direct sata connection.

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Megalexsey, Good question ?. maybe as this has already got a USB port on the top for memory sticks/thumb drives then to add a second port to the USB controller would be easier than adding more circuitry for a SATA controller. but I do not know why, I,m just guessing that it may save a few Yen in production cost.

    Maybe they didn't bother to move to the touchscreen due to lack of tactile feedback. I think that even if an instrument has a touchscreen, there should be ways to bypass it. I would recommend this video about the Tyros series, to illustrate what I mean: th-cam.com/video/qVEeSyjiXSU/w-d-xo.html

    At 02:05 *brilliant* as you nailed it!
    This sort of instruments mostly used by "one-man-band" guys who wanna "show-off". Furthermore look at the size of this and the prize-tag as well...its all big...for what?
    For an instrument which claims it can (and be used to) do everything -- yes in the first place -- but no when it comes to the real job. It is what its made of: plastic.
    It´s not a real workstation, it´s not a real sampler, not a real synth...it´s a little bit of everything but nothing serious. The little MicroBrute with its one analog osc. can easily blow this thing off stage...
    Thanx anyway to let us know what is inside (electronically) ;)

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tubical. I agree its far too expensive for what it does. yes it does a heck of a lot but seeing whats inside they could have sold this for half the price and still made a good profit im sure. i just heard the memory for 1gig is £175 thats just sheer theft. i bought 2gig for my kronos for £26.

    • @tubical71
      @tubical71 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not blame yamaha for the ram exp. cost, some companies do it like this, akai was famous for this until they released the 3rd generation samplers the S2000/3000XL which used PS/2 rams.
      I blame yamaha for the concept of this thing: all in one box but not one serious.
      If i want to spend this amount of chash i´ll go for a korg OASYS. That´s the real deal! it´s all in there and it´s all 100% :)
      But you may know it as you already got a kronos ;)
      But the tyros is for the entertainers they used to have technics keys until they left our "house"
      Yamaha also left the top notch synth corner after the DX series, and never really comed back. nowadays korg cuts in, they do an amasing job, for all producers, synth freax, nerds, pro guys and entertainers. As they got, at least, one box/synth/gear for each....
      May roland will rise again, let´s see what they can reach with their new TR-8 and TB-3 it looks good, but they are much more expensive than the volca series....roland is late may they can climb the "hill-of-fame" again...but sadly i do not see that commin´ they "new" TR/TB stuff ist too late and as well too expensive...i rather buy 2-3 volca beats and hook them together having individual outs as well by using one for one sound, and they are small....

      "This sort of instruments mostly used by "one-man-band" guys who wanna "show-off". "
      Well, that's a strange, and aggressive statement. Could you conceive that they're used by "one man band" guys who simply use it for their business - to make a living.
      I'm really not sure where the "showing off" part comes in. Oh well...
      You're right that it's not a real sampler, synth, etc... It's also not a real piano. It's not a bassoon either. It's an arranger keyboard - and a real one.
      If a person wanted a sampler or a synth, they'd have bought one. If they wanted an arranger keyboard, well, they bought the right thing, no?

    • @organfairy

      Yamaha often cuts cost at the most weird places: I have a Yamaha HE-8 organ, which was the biggest model in their 1989 model range. Everything on it is in stereo - except the speaker! So they build this nice organ where lots of efford has gone into making a nice sound, and then they only use one speaker system so everything sounds very one-dimentional and cheap - until you plug in an external amplifier. The keys on this are also not very durable. You often see second hand Yamaha organs from this era with sagging keys because a little piece of plastic under the keys have broken off.

    Yamaha is taking everyone to the cleaners with their extremely high cost of expansion memory. The memory chips that are on the Expansion memory board cost $5.00 US from the manufacturer. And there are four of these chips on each expansion board. So this is daylight robbery by Yamaha.

      I dare you to look up the prices for replacement earpads for some of Sennheiser's higher-end headphones...
      So 4 chips of $5 plus PCB, assembly etc.... let's call that $25..30 in production cost. That sort of markup is not unusual. Besides, if you just spent 4000 on a Tyros another 100 for this won't be that much of an issue, right?
      It does get funny with equipment that's $$$ brand new but goes for a song on the used market. I once picked up an A3-sized flatbed scanner that had been >€2000 new for €200-ish. Took me quite a while to find a network card expansion for it that wasn't about the same again.

    I never want to have keyboard with BGA chips inside, because they are not reliable!

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not quite right. They are extremely reliable as long as they run fairly cold and are not subjected to mechanical stress. I'm sure you know all the BGA horror stories, but those came about mostly during the transition from leaded solder to unleaded, which increased mechanical stress with thermal expansion. Since then, they adjusted the materials to deal with thermal expansion better, but if the board bends, it's still pretty bad, so laptops fail like that, they are actually pretty floppy. Anyway, the board here is mounted in a presumably pretty rigid case, and the components are likely quite low-power, and if that's the case, it will last an eternity and a half.
