  • Joining Rob for a chat this week is award-winning jazz-pop singer & songwriter Jamie Cullum. They talk about Jamie’s new Christmas album, the impact growing up in a musical household had on his career, and their shared love of Elvis Presley and Louis Prima. Jamie also shares his two career highlights: opening for Billy Joel at Madison Square Gardens and being given the opportunity to write a song for Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino. We also discover that Jamie has only recently started taking piano lessons, and that he has been playing by ear since he was a teenager!

    Rob’s interviews are fantastic because they’re not shallow and impersonal. One knows he cares about it and it’s relevant to him. Authentic and pleasurable. Ironic from a man who likes to do impressions. Joking… These talks really are meaningful and honest. Lovely to watch and there is an educational aspect to them because there is depth to them. And I said it before, he has a proper setup to do them. Suggests seriousness. As Steve said about the Sean Connery impression in one of The Trips: “it’s all about the depth.” I think it’s fair to say: Rob has got one up on him when it comes to interviews.

    I love Jamie so much! I discovered him when I was 13 years old when he came out with “twentysomething“
    I’m normally not at all a fan of jazz but Jamie Cullum, that man knows how to make really good modern jazz.

    he was on 8 out of 10 cats countdown and composed a song for Jon Richardson --very sweet guy. ('he's gonna take her up the aisle' -snicker, snicker-- but 'he has the heart of a champion'

    The first thing that comes to mind for me, regarding Louis Prima, is “Yes, We Have No Bananas”.
    My mother was a piano teacher. I can’t play a note😢

    There used to be a fab video of Giacomo Smith and Adrian Cox playing a Benny Goodman number with Wynton Marsalis and the LCJO.
    I think Goodman, Ellington or Basie is a way better introduction to jazz than Davis or Coltrane.
    Of course, Goodman's classic 'Sing, Sing, Sing' was written by Louis Prima.

    What voice or person is Rob imitating in the intro?

    • @julieprior3126
      @julieprior3126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was Terry Wigan...in his TV talk show days he spoke at the lower registers of his voice, fairly slowly and precisely.

    How the fuck is he 44? He looks like he could pass from anywhere from age 14-23. Voice helps too, it’s perpetually youthful sounding.
    Also, is it me or does he bear a striking resemblance to Rami Malek at times?
