- This is XH558 on the 15/7/11 when she departed Yeovilton for Fairford. I got the engines starting, missed the taxiing (dont ask!) take off and practice display with a nice howling climb out at the end. Its not the best vid ever but noise makes up for it. Please check out my other Vulcan videos, Find out more at www.vulcantothesky.org

She's almost alive! The looks, the sound, the agility in the air.....as close to having a soul as any machine could be.Absolutely stunning to see and hear.
Had the privilege of having a Vulcan fly overhead late 80s when we were staying around the Bala area of N.Wales. The plane seemed to come from somewhere below us,,, and flew right overhead. Totally awesome and unforgettable!
That howl actually sends shivers down my spine.
Anthony Francis You should see it in flight. Those engine make the air in your lungs vibrate.
Anthony Francis ...every sigle time!
Don’t be a pussy...it sends shivers down mine to...
The crackle from those RR Olympus engines is just awesome
Brings back many happy memories working on these marvelous machines
One of the few remaining pilots for the Vulcan used to live in my village which wasnt too far away from where it was based in its last decade or so. Whenever he got the chance he'd do a low flying pass over the village. The roar is just incredible, Even more so when your stood on the ground a few hundred metres away from where its taking off. You could feel it in your chest, such a pity we'll never get to see them back in the air. They truly are an absolute feat of British engineering
One of my best friends is Andy Farrar who was a navigator on the Vulcan and other heavy bombers in the 70s..
It still amazes me how engineering, when the Vulcan was conceived, can get this thing to climb near vertical. Made In Britain.
The POWER of them was incredible at the time .
Yes amazing
The flying devil ray!!! What a beaut
A Vulcan howl and aRolls Royce Merlin on full chat are the sexiest sounds on this planet. Both give me goose bumps.
There's some nice Merlin on a couple of my other vids!
the howl is the most menacing sound a modern soldier can hear in the battlefield i think...
One of Concorde's many inspirations...What an aircraft!
Magnificent! My God that Howl always brings me to patriotic tears of pride for the unparalleled achievement of the Vulcan, at the sunset of the British empire. We should have kept her flying, if the government cared they could have. Do you think the Americans would fail such an important part of their history in this way? Tragic.
Completely agree! The government seems willing to pump millions into so called 'culture' - well I'd say the Vulcan is an iconic piece of British culture and deserved support.
that pilot is the luckiest and bravest person ever. damn. i was always told "stay as level as possible to gain speed" but that beast just shot up. amazing. imagine it with the throttle really turned up!
THE greatest plane ever made- when GB stood for something!
Avro , De Havilland, Hawker and Supermarine put the Great in Great Britain

Is there ANYTHING more intimidating than that ungodly howl and the way she climbs out!
Just loved how the nose wheel left the runway when you took the brakes off.
the noise is insanely gorgeous !! ... proper, old fashioned , no nonsense, Olympus engine that !( they have a Vulcan at Sunderland Air Museum .. very cool ..)
Have you been to RAF Cosford museum? they put it right next to the Victor and Valiant. They even put a telly I'm the bomb hatch so you can watch and listen to it's history
Proud to be a Veteran, Commissioned Officer of The British Army. Having flown.
God Save Our Queen.
God Save Us All.
My uncle used to maintain these wonderful aircraft, refit and bring her back, the roar alone would instill fear.
That howl when it starts moving is just EVIL haha
Glad to see that ground crewman get whatever was stuck out before flight at .24
I still love that plane!
Excellent clip, thanks. Visited Solway Aircraft museum at Carlisle airport a few weeks ago. Best small museum I've been in for a while. Loads to see and great volunteer staff. Quite a few aircraft you can climb into but best of all is the Vulcan - and you can sit in the cockpit. Has to be an attendant present because some kind souls have nicked bits off it. So best to ring first to see if they have anybody available.
9:40 ,minutes in is glorious...
howl is awesome, great vid.
If you can, try and get to see one of this things to do fly past (sadly, that's becoming very rare now). I can honestly say that you will never see something so loud, terrifying and awesome as a Vulcan. Oh, and when I mean loud, I mean 'loud'.
This aircraft is still one of the best and will always be at the top l wish it was still flying and I am proud to say it was made in Britain 🇬🇧
This is a normal start up procedure for a large multi engined aircraft. Each engine is spun up in turn to 25% before the fuel is actually injected and the engine "started". The aircraft will then sit at idle whilst pre flight and systems checks are completed before taxiing. I once watched a B52 go through the same procedure before a mission (to Iraq funnily enough in the early 2000's)....they checked every flight control, every system BEFORE starting all 8 engines - it took about 1 1/2 hours!!
I lived in Goose Bay, Labrador in the late 1950's early 1960's and these, the Victor and ther Valliant were landing at the base on a regular basis.....all white at that time and very impressive British jets.......
I lived about 14km's from RAF Scampton, when they were based there, you could hear them warm their engines up even over that distance. It was an awesome sound! Then a load of them would take off in very quick succesion.
Timetraveller2208 my uncle had same memories from living at Metheringham and Vulcan at Waddington..
Not many cameras can handle that amount of sound all in one hit! ;) Great video!
As a kid in the 60's I lived not far from the end of the Yeovilton runway. Brings back memories.
To think that Britain made 3 different V Bombers all at once!
As its 50 years old and the only airworthy Vulcan I guess they just prefer to take time to get her running. When in service on "Quick Reaction Alert" the Vulcan could be started and ready for takeoff in around 2 minutes. Thankfully that never happened as the world would be a very different place if it had!
Isaw a display at Farnborough mid 70s , the noise shook my diaphragm or something,!!
Saw all the "V-Bombers fly at CNE Toronto's Air Show over the years they flew in airshows in North America. Seeing them was an experience to behold. Spent a day at Cosford Museum with my good friend Dr. Stephen Badsey and my son Drew, Sept 2014 and there they were, all the V-Bombers of old. Now, that was an experience plus so many more even the Dornier 17 removed from the English Channel in June of 2014. I am again a voting member of CWH where our precious "VeRA" is housed, and I hope she and "Thumper" will fly with "Just Jane" in the very near future when "Jane" gets her certification to fly again.
Sir if you can do that little miracle I will personally kiss your feet!!!! Saw VeRA and Thumper (get well soon Thumper) several times last year and still can't talk about it without choking up. The 3 Lancs at East Kirkby was out of this world. Followed VeRA to UK and back home again via FlightRadar24 to make sure she made it safely - what a journey, what memories. To see the three old beauties fly together would almost make up for losing XH558 to the skies. Saw her yesterday at Welshpool and was a quivering emotional wreck. Big thanks to all the crew and support teams who bring these wonderful old aircraft back time and time for us to see.
These are the back-ground noises of my childhood.
When four where spooling up, it felt like the end of the world!
Lovely Video, Lovely Aircraft, BLOODY AMAZING SOUND!!!
Good to know they have funding to keep her airbourne till 2015 currently
Brilliant, awesome & superb!
Shivers down my spine...
20 seconds before rotation, this is fighter performance!
Undoubtably a beautiful bird.
The sound is fascinating.
Just saw her at Blackpool, my daughter nearly wet herself, thank guys!
What a machine!
never forget the Mexican wave of car alarms going off when the Vulcan flew past at church fenton air show . my dad put me on the roof of the transit van he had to get a better vue and the Vulcan caused vibrations in the van which made me slide across the roof mega
Iain Fairless think I remember the air show... those days car alarms going off at airshows with the Vulcan were normal hehehe.
Gonna miss this baby at airshows :'(
snowbird68 Me too, I've spent many hours over the years waiting for her to arrive/depart knowing sooner or later it would come to an end, Guess we'd better make the most of her final flying year.
85RAG I know! Just hope I can get to see her somewhere :( i normally go to Waddington Air show on a coach but that's cancelled this year and I have no transport to get anywhere else so I may sadly miss it. Gutted.
+snowbird68 Airshows will not be the same. I miss the beautiful lady. Nice video.
my fave plane ever it is legandary and OMG the howl
you should hear the antonov 225 take off super loud 👍👍
When Britain was proud.
Dear cameraman , you had one job
I lived in Castleford in the 70's and Vulcans flew overhead every hour or so. I think the ones I saw were flying to Finningley (now Robin Hood Airport)
that howl = goosebumps :D
I heard the howl at 9:38 :) Thanks for posting
snowbird68 I agree
kilometre100 :)
thanks kilometre100 :)
Such a stunning machine.
Love the sheep in the background... 8:50
Poor old girl. I love it when machines judder into life but she won't anymore :(
Magnificent.
Groundcrew are much underestimated!
What buteiful old girl glad I've seen her fly at shows thanks
Shame her engines are knacked Hope people. Keep her flying
+Simon Wilson Not just engines, the airframe is about done in too.
Exceptional. Cheers.
this is a large bomber jet ,
( not a small fighter jet )
and can do a vertical climb
amazing engineering ❤ !!!
I love the howl
Force of might and projection.
Just flying over an enemy in this plane would be enough, to see a big plane maneuvering like it can is scary.
more like a giant fighter than a bomber, the way it takes off
Thoes 4 tiny engines are much greater then every engine made today.
Nothing but the best
Abit like you cant hurry the missus up when getting ready for a night out, massive checklist to go thru lol
what a plane, makes me proud to be british.
Love this youtube soundtrack...
having been on gan for 2 tours I KNOW what a Vulcan howl sounds like
Yes I do too, read the description.
The best ever aircraft
Great vid if you want good close-ups of the plane. Take-off begins at 6:00. Decent howl at the end. For great howling, try =H_ARSE8jEHQ
viva great britin .. from Iraq
9:37 - Spine tingling!
Real Time as it is go
great aircraft
Wondering if any vids are out there of the Vulcan in the mach loop
seen it at fairford 2 times brillient aircraft shame there is not any more flying apart from this one
viva great britin .. from Iraq
by the way ... why it took long time start up
She came over my house on approach to Yeovilton that day. (A couple of miles away)Thought it was fourty tractors and a soprano passing overhead....!
War Plane Heritage is involved in a fight to keep their Avro Lancaster flying. Will they succeed or will that War Bird meet the same fate as XH558?
This is what putin needs to see flying again
Keep flying .....
so where is the howl bit ??
Because the turbine engines are so big!
Scrap HS2 keep vulcans flying
If planes were orgasms this would have me coming forever!!
I love this plane.
Lovely video... I adore this plane. Shame about the troll comment below
Spitfire/Vulcan, Vulcan/Spitfire? Both. In spades.
Absolutely. You can’t compare them, they’re different eras, different capabilities, equally special.
This video got 3 dislikes!!! Those 3 people are out there...they walk amongst us...scary!
Does she have afterburner
No afterburner, but concord had afterburner
этот мотылёк ещё и летает?!
Can anybody tell me what din means, as I found it in one of the comments below.
"Din" is basically a loud or overwhelming noise, I assume that is what the person commenting meant.
Ok thanks @85rag
Four Rolls-Royce Olympus Turbojets
We had hundreds
Thanks for uploading. I’d have given my eye teeth to be in the place of that ground crew! Every year at RIAT I want to snatch the ear defenders off (adult) people and send them home - if you’re not having your eardrums tickled and innards jiggled, you’re missing half the fun!
Having a hearing deficit later on will sweeten the memory.... or not. Impressive bird!
Wow 100 tonnes vertical
I know, 1982
No. I don't mean the Lanc' in England.
Will miss the Vulcan but NOT the DIN
Anne Williams Huh, you speak for yourself. Those of us who are true lovers of this aircraft will miss the "din" (as you call it) too.
What's does din mean
