TH-cam has just thrown this video up on to my feed (March 2024). I have to say I am very impressed with your fishes, the setups and the diet you feed them. As someone who lived on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, collecting and exporting frontosas, I can confirm your choice of large aquaria for these lovely fishes is the right one. They need space and volume, as well as some cover. They don't need plants. Your choice of subdued lighting also accords well with their natural habitat, as living at depth they don't like bright lights. Having dived to catch them at their daytime resting places, I found that they make use of crevices and caves formed by rocks that tumbled to the lake floor thousands of years ago. So they might appreciate a few caves, especially the brooding females. It really pleases me to see these fishes being kept in spacious accommodation where they can exhibit their natural behaviour. Thank you for sharing your passion with us.

Amazing tanks, I do ask the young try not to kill the fish tapping on the Glass it dont attract the fish to come to you but how would like somone bashing you on the side of your head with something large and solid?
Nice frontosa tank but nobody feeds live fish to there fish. Most of us have evolved way past that. Sorry to criticize but i really don't like to see that. In nature thats fine but not in a captive tank.

Frontosas are piscivores in the wild. In captivity they adapt to eating dry foods because they are desperate, knowing instinctively that they will die if they don't. I am not defending the practice of feeding live foods, that is a choice for the individual, and there are arguments for and against this. But as a fish biologist and a former collector and exporter of fishes from lake Tanganyika, I can say categorically that they need fish protein in their diet. This can be provided in the form of frozen fish, but a lot of frozen fish available on the shelves is of marine origin and not suitable for a freshwater predator. Also, feeding prepared foods such as pellets has its drawbacks as all of these contain cereals as a binder, which Frontosas can't digest. Forcing them to eat an unsuitable diet is tantamount to cruelty.
