I just made this and wanted to confirm for any doubters that the sizing IS correct. I have a large head so I cut it with the slight extra as indicated and used about 1/4" seams on my serger. All the pieces fit together exactly, with no fudging or ease needed, and it's plenty roomy on my large noggin! I live in North America so it's not A4 paper -- setting it to 100% actually makes the very bottom of the circle go off the bottom edge, so if I had one suggestion for how the pdf could be updated, it would be to have the circle a couple of cm higher on the page. That way it wouldn't cut off for those of us adapting to non-A4. That's a clue for folks -- if you're using letter paper, 8.5x11", and your print did NOT cut off the bottom of the circle, then you didn't have it set to 100%. :)
I literally sewed for the first time three weeks ago and I may have had more than one glass of wine whilst making this, and it turned out so great. I love it and am going to wear it everywhere.
Love this, So helpful! Something I found easier for the non raw finish is sewing the finish of the hats inside out (the last part that you would see) and leaving a little opening then pulling the hat through that opening and sewing it closed!
ok, my Singapore restricted COVID hobbies have been bread making, classic cocktails, and now bucket hats thanks to this tutorial. I am a 50+ man, who has never sewed in my life, and now I have made matching family reversible bucket hats! My child (8m) picked the material, so it is Harry Potter and Marvel, but they turned out great! I have a monstrous-sized head so I used a Diam/Circumference calculator and worked out how to expand the circle piece and then extrapolated the other pieces and it worked perfectly. As for the standard sizes on the template, in case it helps anyone zero in on the size to use, my wife has a 57cm head circumference and we used the dotted line version which produced a comfortable/loose hat, as my wife prefers. My son has a 51cm circumference so I drew a new smaller circle with a 16.2cm diam, and cut 4mm before (smaller than) the solid line on the brim and headband patterns, and this works as well.
just wanna say im a complete beginner at sewing, before this i had only ever sewn together small scraps of fabric together in an attempt to practice doing straight lines lol (still not super straight 😭) I chose this as my first project and WOW did your instructions make this so easy and calming to do. I expected to be sobbing over my machine but instead i calmly finished the hat (fully double sided) within a little more than 4 hours. Your instructions are super clear and helpful, and i learned a lot through the process! thank you sm for this wonderful tutorial, LOVE my new hat!
I sew, so the step by step on fabric cutting wasn’t needed but the way you explained so clearly step by step made me realize no one had done this as clearly and concisely before and it would have been so handy when I was first learning. You’re a great teacher.
Yesterday I sewed the original bucket hat and it turned out so good. Thank you!!! The crazy thing is that by sewing the hat I was thinking it would be so nice if it is reversible. I wake up and there you are with this video. Thank you I really appreaciate all your hard work. Number one supporter!
This is a great pattern and tutorial. Another method for making it reversible is to turn one of the pieces right side out leaving the other wrong side out and placing the hats right side together, pin and sew around the brim leaving an opening for turning. This method will also have the seam on the inside. Then you can top stitch around the edge of the brim and sew the other lines as well.
This was such an easy and quick sewing pattern. I always struggle with hats being too small, but the larger size in this hat worked perfectly for me. I even got to re-use material from my favorite utility shirt that got a stain on it that I couldn’t remove.
Thank you for the bucket hat pattern and tutorial. I used the measurements to create my pattern (as opposed to using a printer). Everything fit together nicely. I do have a suggestion for anyone making the hat for use in a cold climate. I made the reversible hat using 2 layers of fleece and although it’s warm, it would be better if the headband was about an inch wider so as to cover the ears. My next one will also make the brim an inch or so narrower. Greetings from the USA.
I'm suddenly so crazy about bucket hats and always wanted one but they're kinda expensive for me online and I can barely find any in shops. So I googled how to make one . Coz I remembered I saw a cool guy do it long time ago and it looked fun . And I saw your blog!! So here I'm Can't wait to try this also I got the same Allure sewing machine!!
Commented on your blog post but wanted to add here too for anyone who's hunting for a good tutorial - I really recommend this one, the pattern is nice and simple and the video is easy to follow :)
Great tutorial, thank you so much! I used the regular size pattern (same 22" size head) and found that the style still sits more on the crown of the head. It still looks great on, but I'd suggest going up a size if you want it to sit a bit deeper and snugger :)
Hi Maddy! LOOOVE this bucket hat, like everything that you do! I'm so excited for your future videos!!! I've been learning a lot with your tutorials! :) Thank you so much for sharing with us! :)
I have downloaded the pattern and I will defiantly give this a try as you make it look do-able for a novice sewer like me and thank you for the video x Fee from Kent UK
Thank you very much for sharing your pattern. You inspired me to give it a try. I stopped at thrift store and picked up small bundle of home dec floral print and coordinating solid fabric. My hat has small brim. I checked the circle size and it was correct. I like my hat and I'll make more with adjustment for bigger size, though. Thanks a bunch!🙂
Im about to make a frog 🐸 buckethat with this pattern :) so I'm using green fabric and adding some eyes, a cute mouth and maybe some cheeks :))) thank you for the pattern
Thanks so much for providing a printerLESS pattern, I’m not able to print so I miss out on many patterns. Great project well explained. Did you give seam allowance?
I’m so glad I found your TH-cam channel and Instagram! Seriously a godsend. Grateful for your time, research, experience, and willingness to share with us. Currently making this bucket hat in my favorite cotton.
ive made lots of these hats , for my grandchildren ... but because these are reversible , im having problems with the lines around the brim? i can do them very neatly, i am an experienced sewing machinist as well , but i find the first 2 rows are ok , but after that it starts to get fulness around the brim as i carry on with the lines ? any suggestions anyone ? i am using an industrial machine thankyou
Hi Mandy, I love , love love your denim shirt /jacket . Is there a tutorial to make this or will there be one in the future? About to start your reversible bucket hat!
Try using iron on interfacing- it'll give it a little bit of thickness and it will act as a barrier between the fabrics (each material has a blank sheet behind it so it'll show only that design), as it is white and translucent... I dont know if thats what you were asking about though lol :)
hi! so when i cut out the pattern, my headband & brim pieces are way smaller than what the videos show. am i doing something wrong or? i’m confused. & also when it’s time to sew the brim on, i just get lost. 🤕
make sure you fold the fabric when cutting! basically that part is going to be double the size because you need to double it and add the pattern on the fold of the fabric. The only part where you don't fold the fabric is for the circle.
Exactly what Josefina said! They've been setup as half the size as they're too big to print on one piece of paper. You'll then just need to cut on the fold (as explained in the video and notes on the pattern) and the material will end up being double the size :)
Interestingly, my printer (in the U.S.) was set to scale at 100%, but the pattern was still measuring only 160mm. I tried to increase the scale until the circle reached 170mm...but it wouldn't do it--in a fit of pique I jacked the scale to 200% and it still printed at 160mm LOL. Weird. Anyhow, I happened to notice that my printer allows me to select the paper type, so I selected A4, and went back to 100% scale and it printed perfectly--except some of the outer circle printed off the page. Since I print a lot of patterns from sources out of the U.S, I decided to purchase some A4 paper to avoid this complication in the future. Yay! Love the pattern and the tutorial. Thank you!
What for kind of fabric is the best for making a hat? Like do I need cotton fabric or another type of fabric? Or it doesn’t matter what for fabric I use :)
I've having an issue with the sides and tops not being connected--tried sticking them together with fabric glue. Thoughts? I know this was posted a while ago. Thanks!
thank you so much for the video, im about to do my own hat!! wish me luck. And just to add some opinion, your explanation was really nice, maybe if u added more closer stitching clips it would be even better! :)
I’m new to cut and sew and Every time I go to sew the headband onto the circle my machines threads get all tangled up and stop sewing. Idk what is wrong but every time Re thread both top and bottom and go to try again it keeps happening. How do I troubleshoot and fix this issue?
For all new sewers making this, remember to wash your fabric before sewing it (so your hat doesn't shrink) and to iron your fabric before cutting. Also, follow the golden rule of sewing : sew a seam, finish a seam (eg- zig zag edge of seam allowance, flat fell, French seam, over lock, pink the seam allowance etc), then iron the seam. This makes it much stronger and a much better finished piece
Hiii I actually made my own bucket hat :3 I sewed it by hand since I dont have a machine. It turned out kinda cute. However the top part of the hat seemed a tiny bit larger than the brim ;-; So there is a minor creasing somewhere in the sewing of the hat ;-; Yet I respected the measurements...The only thing I changed is increasing the scale of template impressions (103%) just because I needed my had bigger since I have alot of hair..I also cut the seam allowance. Do you know why did the hat was a lil bit large Mr than the brim and leaving me with a crease? I'm a bit disappointed about that tbh ): But other than that.. it looks cute for my first time making one. :3
@@asipofteawithnosuga hey, I'll try to help but don't know how useful it will be. The pattern included seam allowance, so you didn't have to cut extra, so that may have been the issue. Theoretically if you made all the pieces bigger by the same amount it should have still worked, so I think it is likely that your cutting or sewing wasn't as precise as it should have been to get the right result. Unless there is a reason otherwise, you should sew an equal distance from the edge on all seams, so if you weren't perfectly precise on these bits, that may have caused the issue. I'm not exactly sure what the crease was caused by, but look at the stitching in that area and make sure that no extra fold of fabric is caught in the seams. If so, you might be able to fix it by re-doing that seam. You seem to have done a great job for a beginner though. It takes time to learn how to sew garments and the mistakes I suggested that could have led to your issues here are really easy to make, so don't beat yourself up about it. Hope that helped somewhat
I made this. It didn't turn out as I expected probably because of my beginner sewing skills and the topstitching I decided to add... Once I wash and iron it, I hope I'll like it better.
Great tutorial, easy to follow. I want to make it for my children. How should I adjust the template? Also would you suggest using some interfacing on the brim to make it stiffer?
You pretty much have to alter everything. Smaller circle, smaller everything. It’s a free pattern so you don’t want to complain but she really is very vague. I know you asked this a month ago, but your best bet is to take the headband pieces and just pin it until it fits right, sew it to the circle (it’ll be a bit smaller than the circle) then cut a new, smaller brim and complete it that way. In other words, the top parts can be altered but you have to cut a new brim.
When you say half a metre, do you mean half a metre total (as in, for both sides of the hat), or half of each fabric? I should be able to figure out what you mean but my spacial visualisation skills are severely lacking haha

Thanks
This worked for me
Or just cut the circle on the half line fold
i set it to 100% and the circle diameter actually measures to 170mm as stated but it's not cut off at the bottom. I wonder if the pattern was updated?
I literally sewed for the first time three weeks ago and I may have had more than one glass of wine whilst making this, and it turned out so great. I love it and am going to wear it everywhere.

That’s what I did too as I would make a mess of trying to neatly fold it under!

A friend who has a larger head made me giggle! I love this tutorial 🥺
I thought I had a big head ... the pattern printed beautifully and my hat is nearly done. Just the brim to finish now. Thanks for an informative demo.
was about to do a reversible after attempting the steps of the original vid and you posted just and time!! :)
just in time*
This is the best tutorial/ pattern . Thank you !!! Sizing is perfect ! Have done a few already , first time trying reversible 🤞thank you so much ♥️

I didn't know that you could make this without interface, as most videos have been showing. I have to try this
I needed this video so bad! 💗
I did it and mine actually looks good! Thank you for this video!! 💕
What for kind of fabric is the best for making a hat? Like do I need cotton fabric or another type of fabric? Or it doesn’t matter what for fabric I use :)
Good on you girl! You don't have to iron or get changed or wear makeup if you don't want to.
Could it have due to lack of clear seam allowance information? I couldn't find it.
We all need one of these!
Ive found that compared to the one sides hat the reversible hat brim is VERY THIN…how can i solve that?
Hello I am wondering what adjustments could be made to make this for a 2 year old? thanks
This was such a thorough tutorial! Thank you so much!!
I’m new to cut and sew and Every time I go to sew the headband onto the circle my machines threads get all tangled up and stop sewing. Idk what is wrong but every time Re thread both top and bottom and go to try again it keeps happening. How do I troubleshoot and fix this issue?

Such an amazing tutorial, thanks for sharing xo
Love it 😍... This will be my first sewing project!!!
Can’t wait to try this!
You look like Lana Del Rey and Kesha Mixed together you're beautiful, thanks for the Tutorial by the way! ❤❤❤
hey so I tried this tutorial. however, the hat is super big for me. Which piece should I alter?
You pretty much have to alter everything. Smaller circle, smaller everything. It’s a free pattern so you don’t want to complain but she really is very vague. I know you asked this a month ago, but your best bet is to take the headband pieces and just pin it until it fits right, sew it to the circle (it’ll be a bit smaller than the circle) then cut a new, smaller brim and complete it that way. In other words, the top parts can be altered but you have to cut a new brim.
thank you very much i will try this out and thank you for the easy to download pattern some other videos have payment🥲 but yours is truly free😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
wow you are so clever! this is amazing! thank you so much for the pattern :)
13:20 how much did she fold?? 1 inch a couple cm?
amazing tutorial! i'm so keen to give it a go!!
I messed up at the brim and I thought I had just ruined the whole thing but at the end I loved it more than anything besides the minor complications
Amazing explanation thank you 😊
Hi sister. What is the brand of your sewing machine? I hope u can answer it . Thank you 😊
I have a Janome JR1012 which I've been using since 2009! Love it so much :)
I just used your digital version and it definitely runs tinnnyyyy! I’m in Aus and use mm’s but this is like a kids size hat :(((
❤❤❤awesome job
I love your voice ❤️ it’s so pretty
Thank u. I like this one so u can have 1 bucket hat but two diffrent
Wait is the seam allowance included in the template?
How big is your seam allowance?
i can't wait to make my own!
Thank you for the pattern! ❤
I tried your first tutorial and it looked like a normal hat. I don’t now why...what did I do to not make it look like a bucket hat???
Help pls....
omg just after i followed the first bucket hat tutorial!
When you say half a metre, do you mean half a metre total (as in, for both sides of the hat), or half of each fabric? I should be able to figure out what you mean but my spacial visualisation skills are severely lacking haha
It’s sad to see so many people beating themselves up for not understanding such a vague pattern.
yay im going to make one today
This is AWESOME! ang galing galing 😍
fiiirst, thankyou for another amazing tutorial
I try you pattern and I loving it!!!!!
I really love your channel! Could you make a diy tutorial of a open back layered halter dress? Please🥺
