Jim Caviezel was brilliant in this movie. But Guy Pearce turned in a wicked performance that was absolutely one of the top ten greatest screen villains of all time.

The story of the original author's father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, is badass and tragic.
Thomas's mother was a Haitian slave woman, father was a French noble. The noble had three children with his slave, then sold her and the two youngest, but took the eldest (Thomas) back to France to be educated-including by one of the best French swordsman of the day. This tall, handsome dark-skinned French noble would eventually marry Marie-Louise Élisabeth Labouret, the love of his life (a commoner, daughter of an innkeeper [Thomas lived at that inn while getting educated]), and earned a reputation as a cavalry officer successfully leading men on suicide missions leading from the front (single-handedly held a bridge for a few minutes receiving multiple wounds including having a bit of his scalp hanging down). Though I think he earned his rep, then married her. However, Thomas made a rising Nepolean Bonaparte jealous, and naively called Neplean out for his bullshit during the Egyptian campaign. Napoleon kicked him out of his army, Thomas was ambushed by Napoleon's enemies (ironic) and put in prison for years. Thomas' prison stay made him terminally ill.
His son Davy was only four or six when Thomas died, but Marie-Louise raised him stories about what a badass his dad was. Davy took his father's name Alexandre Dumas as his own pen name.
Alexandre Dumas's (author) great-grandson won five Olympic medals for fencing, including two gold Olympic medals.
I've always thought Dumas father story would be a great bio-pic. There's so much drama and loss. Plus it'd be an authentic story about a true POC heroic figure during a time of historical significance.

Honestly, the detail that they don't recognize that he's Edmond I think is part of the message. Their betrayal and cruelty to him meant nothing to them. He was someone they forgot about and it didn't leave an imprint. He was an inconvenience to be gotten rid of. Mercedes is the only one who recognizes him because he meant something to her. But I do think it's realistic that she wouldn't immediately. It is 16 years later, she believes him to be dead, he was a young man before and has changed in his demeanor and appearance. But even then she said he reminded her of Edmond.
Anyway back to the point; Edmond meant nothing to them, the betrayal was inconsequential to these people, so the revenge is so much sweeter when it hits them that he has come back from the dead to destroy their lives. It's something they never saw coming and he used that to his advantage
Also 20ish years old to 35ish… there’s some changes.
I don't know that a kid on Christmas morning could be as excited as you were during this movie. :) It was such a treat to see how much fun you had!
This is one of my all time favorite movie since I saw it in theater. I can almost recite it by heart. A few years ago, I spent 2 months in a hospital bed, not knowing if I would ever walk again. And then spent another 4 in a physical therapy hospital for a total of 6 months before I could go home. Every day, I would wake up, in pain, defeated, but I would close my eyes and almost like a prayer, i would whisper "Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine!" and I would tackle whatever pain was in store that day
Almost 8 years later, I am walking (limping but walking), and I stand tall (as tall as a 5'5 woman can be). It's crazy how a movie, a book, a quote, can give you strength when there is none left.

This is one of my favorite movies based on classic literature. It is so good they haven’t tried to retell the story on the big screen since. It’s crazy because I was a little younger than Albert in the film when I first heard that speech. My dad wasn’t around really when I needed him. Going through the phases about learning to be a man with no guide. And then I heard that speech, I was hooked ever since. When your a boy transitioning to be a man. It’s important to have good role models. The one who should’ve been there wasn’t. So aside from my Grandpa stepping up to the plate. I found my role models in movie characters like Indiana Jones, James Bond, Batman(89 film), Old Obi-wan Kenobi, and of course The Count of Monte Cristo.

That, my good sir, is the late great Sir Richard Harris, the first actor to play Dumbledore before being recast with Micheal Gambon after his passing.
His voice has such a warm grandfatherly presence.
It was even crazier in the novel. In the book, his father died of starvation bc there was nobody left to look after him. Also, his revenge plot was way crueler and more elaborate. He didn't just kill the people who betrayed him. He ruined their reputations and lives so thoroughly that even their families wanted nothing to do with them. He destroyed their lives, then isolated them, and then made them despair as he did in prison. It was horrifying and delicious.
Also the kid really is fernand's son. Not Edmonds & he falls in love & marries a slave girl he rescued. Mercedes wants Edmond back but he doesn't take her back telling her it's her punishment for marrying fernand. He does leave her money that she can live off the rest of her life but she doesn't use the money on herself giving it to her son
It was also very long and a difficult read. I like the movie plot better.
Luis Guzman is still my favorite part. "I'll run up to Paris! Bam Bam Bam Bam! I'll be back before week's end."
I still hope you get into more of Alexandre Dumas' work. There are some great (and terrible) adaptations of The Three Musketeers out there to discover.

_Man in the Iron Mask_ is legit. Young Leo DiCaprio plays two characters being a good dude and the most ain't-shit dude at the same time and killing it as both

This is one of my top 3 all time favorite movies. It has everything in it. Revenge, love, growth, and adventure.
Also pirates, treasure, prison escape, wise mentor and pupil relationship, knife fighting, sword fighting, and much more. This really is one of the greatest stories of all time.

One of my favorite scenes is when they buy the house and the dude straight up leaves with his treasure on the spot - doesn’t even notify any family members - just straight up knows he’s gone - no splitting with anyone - gonna buy himself a better life
This, is my opinion, is one of the greatest stories ever told. Every step of this movie is absolutely classic, from the beautiful directing and setting to the incredible acting and writing, but the story itself is complex and Shakespearean and grand in scope, it’s wonderful.
After watching the 1963 adaptations of Cleopatra with Liz Taylor and the 1999 one with Billy Zane, it's difficult to like this adaptation full of familiar clichés.

I read this book before I watched the movie and the movie holds up! This kind of revenge takes a lot of patience, which Edmund had and every target paid for it slowly but surely. That’s my favorite part of this movie. How Edmund strategically took everything from them before he killed them.
Please read the book!!! This is one of the better film adaptaions of the book (and there've been many) but nothing can recreate the joyful experience of reading the novel. This film represents about 5% of the story (the film is 2 hours but the audio book is 50 hours). In the novel Edmond gets revenge on all the people who conspred against him in so many different and creative ways over many years. If you liked this film, the book will blow you away.

This is my favorite book of all time! I like the movie but it just can't compare to the book. Every time the Count revealed himself as Edmond Dantes to anyone was absolutely EPIC!
While this version departs a lot from the book and even other adaptations, it is, by far, my favorite. Jim Caveziel is magnificent as Edmond and I just adore Dagmara Dominczyk as Mercedes.

The movie is very family friendly
They omitted that the count had a lover much younger than him, Princess Haydee, and abandoned Mercedes.
Which reminded me of the story of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. The fact that Caesar was married did not prevent him from having an affair with the young queen of Egypt.
In the film Cleopatra with Liz Taylor, it shows Mark Antony going to talk to Calpurnia, Caesar's wife who found out about Caesar's affair with Cleopatra.
This is one of my all-time favorites.
I first saw this movie when it was brand new, in a movie theater with my girlfriend at the time. It's been one of my favorites ever since. I love watching other people react to it!
Some of the stars who are well known in other movies are
- Edmond played Christ in "The Passion of the Christ".
-The priest played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies
-Villefort's wife played Draco Malfoy's mom in the last 3 Harry Potter movies
-Albert played Superman in 4 movies
And the warden of Chateau d'lf is also the main villain in "The Crow" movie.

The Count of Monte Cristo is such a great story and an amazing book. This movie is so good because, while no movie could do the book complete justice, the movie does fair justice.
The author of The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas, was a pretty amazing person in his own right. His grandmother was an African slave in the French colony of Saint Dominque (which today is Haiti). His grandfather was a French nobleman. Dumas' father, when he was 14, left Haiti and went to France and joined the military. He rose in ranks until he eventually became a general and the highest ranking black officer in all of Europe.
In addition to The Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas also wrote all The Theee Musketeers stories which were hugely popular and still popular today and other popular stories as well. Such an interesting person!
To top it all off, the Monte Cristo is one of the tastiest sandwiches ever 😋
To anyone who likes The Count of Monte Cristo I always recommend the movie Sleepers. It is a much darker story but one of the most incredible revenge stories I've ever seen. And it's based on an allegedly true story.

One of my all time favorite films.
My parents went on a double date with another friend couple they knew and the women in the group wanted to go see this in theater. My dad and his friend both thought it was going to be a chick flick, but decided to make their wives happy and go see it anyway. My dad came home enthusiastically raving about how amazing the movie was and the day it came out on DVD, he bought it and we sat down to watch it that night. It has literally been one of the whole family's favorites ever since. I got my husband to sit down and watch it with me one night and he also thought it was going to be some period chick flick. It is now one of his favorite movies as well! Great writing, great acting, satisfying ending and I'm so happy to have watched you react to this!
Have you ever watched Cold Mountain? The film is based on the bestselling 1997 novel of the same name by Charles Frazier. The book is inspired by the odyssey by Homer.
The structure of Cold Mountain is all about the return of the "W.P." Inman to Ada Monroe. The motivation for him to defect and face all obstacles.
Edmond never intended to return to his former bride. Her saga was not to return to her, but to take revenge for the evil they did to him. So nothing prevented Edmond from meeting other women on his journey and starting an affair.

Also, he was poor so some new guy showing up with more money than God wouldn’t even be conceivable in their minds to be him if they had known he escaped.

If you like revenge movies you need to check out I Saw the Devil...it's a Korean film, and just a bit more intense than this lol.
Not a bad film unless you've read the book. At 1500 hundred pages they had to cut out more than half of the story to get it on the big screen and it shows.

This is the 11th or 12th channel that I’ve watched review this movie. So far, without fail, every single women reviewer has guess this big reveal right out the door.
The second Albert first appears, to one degree or another, they all go, “Oh crap, he’s got to be Edmund’s son. That’s why Mercedes was so quick to marry the count, she had to lock him down before it became obvious that she was pregnant.”
No dude so far has guessed until the big reveal. I guess it’s a woman thing.

This movie and Princess Bride are two legendary movies. You know what other movie you'd like that is similar ... the 1993 version of The Three Musketeers. Keifer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Charlie Sheen and Oliver Platt are awesome and it has the great Tim Curry in it.

omg I went to see this in theatres with my family when I was a little girl. I thought it was going to be a vampire movie because of the word "count". I was sadly mistaken and thought this was boring so I fell alseep. I woke up on the part where he was trying to be quicker than the water droplets with his hand and kept trying to do that when I got home lmao

In the book the fate of de Villeforte was so spine chilling even Dantes steps back in horror and wonders if he had gone too far.
That's but you can't blame her any more. She thought he was dead. She had to figure out how to navigate herself out of harm's way in order to move on. She had to make the best choice out of a bad situation after that.

I love the reference to the novel in The Shawshank Redemption. They're pulling out books to place in the stacks and the one guy says "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumb Ass. Tim Robbins corrects him pronouncing his name properly then tells him the book is about a prison break. Morgan Freeman flippantly responds "we should file that under 'Educational,' too."

His looks should have been dealt with better. In the book, the years of torture and hunger had physically changed him so that we was unrecognizable. But this a great movie.
