They might've been rare for his area at the time or he was just ignorant, irregardless, the person that he sourced them from probably upsold him one of those premises. Coturnix quail are by far the most farmed species around the world now.
When I was a just a boy, it was common to run across a large covey of quail here in the south. Usually in a field, they would burst from cover, and your heart would almost leap from your chest. In the spring you could hear them calling all over the place, with the unmistakable bob-white. The last covey I saw here, was more than twenty yrs ago.. and they no longer sing.
Seriously, you can find these guys within 30miles of you on craigslist. They are just very easy to breed, and you really only need a single mating pair to get started and then a new male every year. He likely has a larger number of males to that keep diversity up.
I have two pet coturnix quails and they are the sweetest little creatures. I couldn't imagine them living in battery cages like this and I'm so glad I was able to save them from such a horrible life.
Perhaps not, but that doesn't stop them from being miserable. It's like putting a dog in a small kennel as a puppy and leaving it there it's whole life, never letting it out, never interacting with it, never giving it anything to play with. Sure, the dog's been in the cage it's entire life and doesn't know any different, but would you think it's happy living like that?
I use to raise these same kind of Quail, the males use to crow much & I got so many eggs all the time.. These quail are raised much where I live.. Hardy birds.
Hmmm I love quail eggs! My grandma raised quail and I remember as a little kid we would run around in the farm all day, and then she would ring a bell and all the grandkids would run inside to eat grandma's hard boiled quail eggs. We loved sitting around the table and peeling the eggs one by one. Those were the days!
These are salad bar item in restaurants although you might consume them at the main course. They are to be served boiled and peeled off. There used to be a myth these eggs were afrodisíac, again a myth. They are a great compliment just as mushrooms on one’s salad. The great thing about these eggs is that you do not need to grow them as schlock chicken farms with antibiotics and hormones , so they are supposed to be a healthy snack.
@@ryanhill6684 I think there point is that it's not the best housing looks to be wire ground too and this looks like a poor chicken layer environment wich I'm not a fan of like atleast give them something to walk on

I tried my hand at raising Pharaoh quail and ate the eggs. also fed some of the eggs to the quail. they gobbled them up. I still have a jar of the egg shells I blew the liquid egg out of. eventually I gave all their freedom. they probably died prematurely because of our cold winters but they had a good life. PS there poop is great fertilizer.
They probably huddled together under some porch somewhere. Starving and bleeding from hawk attacks. Praying for the good old days when they lived well-fed in a safe cage.
I don't know how much you know about these quail, but I released them in early fall so that they could get some flight time before winter, one day I was driving to work and I saw one fly across the road by the river, they are good flyers and the brown ones have good camouflage but they are quail that are raised for their eggs but mostly for their meat and whether I eat them or an animal eats them, makes no difference, every body has to eat I released them in early fall so they could develop the oils they need to protect themselves the elements, I kept them in a tent outside for a few days. a person I new bought a bunch of them from someone and released them in a field and went out the next day to hunt them and he could not find one bird. they are experts at concealment. enjoy.
Many places sell them now. I just started raising some for myself this year. So far I have only eaten one egg. Given some away and pickled 4 dozen that will be ready to eat in a couple weeks. Lots off eggs for sale on eBay and form other places. I wouldn't call them rare.
It's Coturnix, not Cortnix and this this a very decent farm compared to many. Get ready to see quail eggs take over y'all! Don't they know about egg cutters yet though?

the birds don't necessarily need sunlight if they are raised in buildings, there are many lights that mimic the light waves for daylight that have the correct spectrums etc etc. Think of a grow bulb for plants that don't get enough sun, its the same thing for the birds. To lay eggs the lights must be provided with 14 to 16 hours of daylight otherwise the birds wont lay.
its an old video i know but Im down in the east coast Canada ive had coturnix for a year and they are sort of rare I mean the brown coturnix is a common color but I have to drive 2 hours to get my starter chicks and since im close to a city im surprised how many people want quail and eggs and bird. you can keep some in your apartment in a rabbit cage because they are "game birds" they have different regulations then say chickens or other poultry.
Cool operation but I wish the adult birds could get a break off the wire... Don't look like they have a ton of space either. I mean it works, and it's economical, but a little sad.
I am not sure why youtube keeps recommending me quail videos, but theyre cool to watch none the less

Yeah they must live in a hole. Cots are the number 1 breed of quail... for meat and egg production. they have no clue what their talking about...
