Graduated in CogSci a couple years ago and had a very similar experience! Going for a masters in IXD and moving from the Bay to NY. Pls wish me all the best. I will be learning a lot and it will def be a big change

@@KarenSupandi thank you so much, it means a lot! I’ve been following you since I was in undergrad and it was so nice being able to relate to someone. I went to Davis and the Bay is my home, born and raised. I’ll be studying masters in Information Experience Design at Pratt Institute. I’m excited for this new step but also a bit intimidated with the move and slightly nervous since I’ll be learning the tools from scratch along the way. But I’m taking the leap of faith for my future

@@karlasantamaria4955 Girlll BIIGG congrats!!! it's definitely scary to try something new but that's how we grow. you're so brave 🥺I hope the move goes smoothly and that you learn a lot in the program and meet tons of amazing people! And thank you so so much for being here all this time, it means a lot to me too.
Will be cheering you on from home here in the bay ♡

wow im in the exact same position regarding majors. im currently at sjsu for SWE but am not sure if this may be for me. Im also interested in UI/UX design and came across cog sci at ucsd and berkeley. Im struggling to decide if i should drop to a cc and transfer to ucb or ucsd in a year (i have some credits from taking cc classes during hs). Do u have any tips for this type of decision making? Im also worried ucb might be too competitive and hard for me, especially if i wanted to get into some clubs. Also how was the workload for cog sci and were the design/tech clubs hard to get into?

Hi there! Hmm, I don't have a lot of experience with CC tbh, but I think instead of dropping to CC and then transfer, I would suggest trying to transfer directly to ucb/ucsd - I know they say it's a bit harder but I actually have like 3 friends who did that successfully haha, one of them was from UCSD to Berkeley and another was from UCSB to Berkeley. So I think it may be worth trying, cause that way you won't have to 'waste' a year of undergrad.
As for berk's difficulty level, I think it's very major-specific! computer science was a little too intense for me, but the people in cognitive science and the workload were generally chill, also prob because I enjoyed what I was learning so it didn't feel like a chore to study LOL. clubs for design/tech were not bad when I was there either! consulting clubs were the notorious ones for being exclusive, but there's this big club called Innovative Design that a lot of my friends were a part of.
To be honest, I found that when searching for jobs post-grad, your resume and experience would be the most important -- not really the name of your school (and tbh SJSU is already a great school!) If you could find a club or experience opportunities for design within SJSU i think that would be worth pursuing as well if you don't end up transferring.
At the end of the day tho, like I said in the video, there is no right or wrong decision :) inform yourself as much as possible (like asking questions/posting comments like this!! thank you for valuing my opinion haha) but you're the one going through it! so trust yourself that you know what's best for you. either choice will be ok in the end.
I hope this helps!!! will be supporting you from afar!!

@@KarenSupandi Thanks so much! This was really helpful and I appreciate ur words of encouragement! I'm actually enrolled in both cc and sjsu rn so I wouldn't lose out on a year of undergrad, as long as I drop one before the deadline. Just have to decide if its worth the boost since its still not guaranteed ill be able to transfer to Berkeley.
Yeah sjsu is def pretty good for tech and networking. I actually just met a guy from Berkeley while on campus promoting his Vibee app haha. The clubs here also connect us with industry professionals. I just I feel Berkeley will have more opportunities to collaborate with peers and also more campus life, since sjsu is mostly commuters. I also dont think we have cog sci unfortunately.
Anyways, would love to be able to keep in touch with you in case I do end up at Berkeley or whatever happens! That innovative design club you mentioned looks amazing and is exactly what I'm looking for in a club to gets hands-on experience! Ill first check out some design clubs here at SJSU too. Thanks again!

@@justjaloeAh gotcha okok! yess honestly it sounds like both options are great - staying at SJSU would already you up nicely for post-grad, but Berkeley might fulfill more of the social aspect of college life as well. for sure, keep me posted! if you have any other questions I would be happy to help :)

i had such a hard time staying steady in college but i'm returning after a 2 year break, as a 25 year old junior in college and i'm SCARED! i'm planning on becoming a corporate girlie, but i'm also worried i won't be hired because of my age. what do you think? :((

OMG IM SO PROUD OF YOU!!! Nooo youre still so YOUNG. trust me. its never too late to become a corporate girlie. from my experience, roles are never determined by age - as long as you take the time to build your experience and network, doors will always open. I am so happy to hear this!! Sending you so much positivity, you can do it I believe in you!! ♡
