@moonboogien8908 Why would you solder something expensive with salt water though? Isn't it obvious that you gotta use the right tools for the job? The argument doesn't befit the situation when you'd go for salt water. That aside... Most probably your solder wire has flux in it, which is corrosive. There are "no-clean" fluxes of course, but you know, after soldering, you should clean the pcb from the flux anyway. It's sticky and disgusting. If you use no flux at all, and use sand paper on contacts for real, then that's not how it's done either. Use a flux. Just, an appropriate one.
Imho it is not a cleaning of surface. The idea is that he is causing a microetching of the iron surface by use of weak acids. The causes a mechanical adhesion of the solder
Wrong, he is soldering to aluminum. Alcohol cleaning and non-cheap but regular flux don't cut it. His joint is not likely to be very good the way he did it, but he still managed to get adhesion by using acid to eat away the aluminum oxide layer and the water to slow down re-oxidation. Frankly I would sooner saturate a piece of steel wool in plumber's tinning flux, use abrasion from the steel wool to let that remove the oxidation and then the petroleum jelly base keeps the oxygen out till soldered (some would advise to just use an oil bath/coating instead). Again this is for aluminum. If it had been mild steel instead, it would have been a walk in the park without the rest.
The way the solder beaded-up on the last one, I'm fairly confident the solder is stuck on just by the flux. He's just not hitting it at the right angle and/or hard enough to break the flux THIS TIME after he uses his "salt" method.
I think there's a reason why no professional uses that "trick". Corrosion being the main one. Doing things on the cheap side generally comes with a higher price in the not so long term.

It is just a basic Acid flux though the basic lesson us use a larger Iron and the flux in the solder would have worked. Finally do not use this flux for electrical / electronic work because you have to remove all traces because it is very corrosive as far as most metals are concerned.
That makes no sense. Surface area increase is not required at all for proper soldering. However, removing surface oxidation/corrosion is required for a good solder joint so the acid has a benefit whether you chose to increase the surface area or not. Abrasion is another method of removing a surface oxidation layer but in the case of aluminum, the oxidation reforms immediately so it is helpful to have the acid still present. Plus, you have to concede that when using the solder, either you had to add some (at least mild) acid flux to it if it didn't already have that IN the solder. More often than not, if soldering something meant to be soldered, you don't need or want the extra step of scratching (or other abrasive removal) of that oxidation layer, but in the case of aluminum, you have to work against exposure to air and the oxygen it brings with it.
