    Went to the dealer to get this Polaris Assault Burandt tunnel bag: amzn.to/2R7KByh
    Had no idea you couldn't fit the full size long bag on a 144! :( Shorty shovel bag is the only option without removing under seat pouch. Any recommendations?

      I just bought this cheap aluminum telescoping shovel. I keep the head in my bag and the handle in the side of my bag with a little paracord, cant even tell its there. Not a good shovel for building jumps but its just right for getting unstuck. I carry fuel on my tunnel.

      The polaris takes 10 hrs over 5500 rpm to unlock full power. Mine was fast but after break in was a very noticeable improvement in power.

    The stiff preload on the front track shock will act as a fulcrum which will make it lift skis quicker than if you softened the front track shock. That also removes wight from the skis which are a wider base for cornering which is why the Polaris lifts the ski coming out of turns. Put 4 scales under both sleds and get all the weight % the same and see how they compare. That would be very interesting.

    I have an Assault 800 and it is just an amazing machine both on and off trail. I like it because it's kind of wild and nimble and when you take a corner...you TAKE a corner. I've driven the Riot, Backcountry XRS, and the SKS and I just love the higher/standing riding style of the Polaris Axxys.

    Centre of gravity way too low on the Riot?? Isnt that what everyone wants? Ski stance is adjustable, maybe it was at the outer setting? Nice review however.

    • @matt-justice
      @matt-justice  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll update as I get more seat time... just first impression riding both back to back. (Keep in mind, both are stock dealer config out of the box... some dealers suck btw, never know till later) Yep everything is a bit lower, even the Riots bars to footwell distance is just a hair too low, so when standing I’m slightly hunched over. The Riot also feels heavier than the Assault, which accentuates this even more. But as some other commenters have suggested, I’m going to adjust ski stance, preload, straps, and damping next ride.

      @@matt-justice i thought that is why arctic cat is the only one to lay over the cylinders in their motor design to lower the gravity for flat cornering

  • @Dc-nc3ws

    All I ever owned was arctic cat. Took a ride on my buddies 2018 rush. Traded my 2017 zr in and bought a 2019 switch back and never looked back. The feel is completely different between arctic cat and Polaris. One of my other friends bought a 2019 race addition zr. We swapped sleds for about 45 minutes and I was bored out of my mind on it. I felt like I was riding on a log. And he did not want to get off my Polaris. The new Arctic cat feel much better than they used to but they are still no comparison for the axis chassis. Also rode a few brand new ski doos and after riding on the axis every other sled feels like your riding something old-school they are way too low to the ground and boring. To each his own I guess but I think I will stick with the axis.

    Excellent job explaing everything! Im very interested in the assault so ill be watching all your sled videos this winter to hear your thoughts. Any chane you will get some seat time on a ski doo backcountry? I will be ordering either a assault or backcountry xrs this spring. I love the playful feeling and being able to lift the front end on command it gives the sled a fun factor that becomes addicting. Do you have the 1.6 on the both sleds?

    • @matt-justice
      @matt-justice  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure yet, would definitely like to try an XRS. I will probably like it, I liked all the renegades I rode in the past on the trails. 10-4, wanted the same track all the way around to compare. Want to get some clips showing difference in ski lift, hard to capture without a couple cameramen!

    • @Sdm07120
      @Sdm07120 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good! I had a 2018 freeride 146 and the 850 etec is extremley responsive its a great motor and drive train but it takes some getting use to the riding position because you are so far forward on the G4 it feels awkward at first. Its hard to beat the technology and build quality of ski doo thats what always brings me back to them, but polaris has stepped up their game big time since introducing the axys and the assault seems to be the perfect fit for how i like to ride plus there snowcheck program makes it even more enticing but i def want to try a BC XRS before ordering. Hopefully in march at the snodeo both will be available to demo. Thanks for the info and videos!

    Take some preload out of your front shocks on the assault and it helps on trail, at least it did for me. I agree the Riot feels like a confident trail machine but a less exciting off trail machine. It's much like I felt in my review last season honestly. I thought a different set up with suspension/limiter straps would change it but overall it's very similar to what I experienced last year.

      I think people forget that the Riot is the 75/25 sled and the Riot X is the 50/50 sled.
      I think since Cats are already ahead in trail stability that they lose that fun factor off trail. I think my wife will love the Riot while I'm going to be happier with an Assault or Riot X (Or Backcountry).

    Regarding the snappiness , I have a new Riot too , I have 105 miles on it so far , but wondering if it is because break in period , they told me don't expect full power for a while ... Regarding the feel difference between the two ... Feel the same , Polaris is more tippy to support more of the off trail riding where as Riot I felt was designed for Trail first , and some Meadow play... With that said though, and I do have a video that you can check out on it, I was first down many trails on my first ride on Riot , I was in 2-3 feet of snow , and I was Super impressed with the flotation of the Riot . Did not get stuck once .. Thus far no mechanical failures related to Riot.. However I do keep my Riot covered when not riding and when tailoring it .. Power wise , coming from 135 hp machine prior to Riot I was impressed ... I was at 9,000 to 10,000 foot elevation too.... One thing that I did have done , this Saturday, and I have not tested it since was Had clutch Kit Installed for my Elevation ..So looking forward to seeing how it rides after that ...Did have a couple of questions for you, what Elevation where you Riding? Also, did you try changing Shock Settings on Riot ? I think the other thing anyone needs to consider is Price .. when I build out an switchback Assault with 800 motor to keep it fair , to match what The Riot both functionality wise and Color/Graphics was , Assault lists for over 3k more then Arctic Cat Riot 800 and if I compare the 2 800's from reported HP, Riot is higher so we will have to see over time how power plays into things after break-in period ... So with 3K I can do a lot!! So to me So far comes down to how much you are wanting to Spend , and how much Trail vs Off Trail riding you are going to do ... For me , I got the Riot because We do not have groomed Trails where I ride most of the time, and many times I am first on and Breaking trails.... and So far on the First 2 days of Riding its doing exactly what I purchased it for ... So I am a Happy Camper Thus far .... See how it goes with Clutch Kit... also purchased Knee Pads to because I have a tendency to Ride way forward .... I am suspecting when you are trail riding you are gonna be lovin the Riot, and I am thinking you are going to like Assault off Trail as it is built more for it .. We can compare notes this season... Thinking next Ride for me will be close to X-mas... Thank you for Video Good info!

    Looks to me that the Riot has dual carbides while the assault has singles? That in its self will completely change how a sled handles. I personally prefer duals on the trail. It just stops the sled from darting. I am looking to get an 800 assault and one of the first things I would do is put duals on it. Interested to see your opinions with the sleds set up and broken in.

    • @matt-justice
      @matt-justice  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have some update videos coming. Cliff notes are, the Assault is the dartiest sled ever on hard packed groomed trails. Pretty terrible, basically needs new skis. (Dealer says change ski pressure blah blah, but when you’re body is rocking back and forth across the sled while it changes lanes, it ain’t the ski pressure Jerry!)

      @@matt-justice I have an Arctic Cat that was almost impossible to keep in a strait line on hard packed and I switched to woodys dual carbides and it completely eliminated that. Might be worth a try.

    I've seen a few of these comparisons and my conclusion, form what I see, is the reason the Assualt can be pulled over easier making it more "flickable" I think, is do to the Riot having a sway bar?? Possibly that and the adjustable ski stance being set at the wider setting.

      I’m on it, snowing right now so hopefully tweaking tomorrow. Hard to deny initial impressions hopping off one directly to the other... Polaris was setup near perfect except for hand controls. The Cat was awful all the way around. Likely my dealer, being they delivered the sled with front end bolts barely threaded. Suspension likely the same...

    The assault bars need adjusted correctly. Line bar mounts up with angle of steering stem and rotate bar to correct angle. I think this is a lot of your problem with turning. Also your shock preload will effect ski lift might want to try adjusting for more ski pressure

    • @matt-justice
      @matt-justice  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cory, how do you mean? They’re flared up so high which is creating the uncomfortable bend in any position other than standing. Are you saying rotate them down?

    • @Sdm07120
      @Sdm07120 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I noticed this as well. I can see why they would be uncomfortable sitting. You want to align the riser block with the steering stem. Then rotate the bars back to your liking so it’s comfortable both sitting and standing. The way it is now is biased towards standing only. All personal preference of course according to how you ride. Hope that helps!

    • @coryroot
      @coryroot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Justice [Clever Leverage] yes riser block should be in line with stem or it creates very awkward steering. Then the actual bars need rotated to the correct position. I believe this is in the owners manual

  • @donrochester7037

    In short, you like the way tipped up rails handle. Thats why the Polaris wheelies easier. Its like a 121 that rocks back on the last 10" of track when you hammer it. I like that too. Mountain sleds used to have that but its not good for steep climbing. Remember, 2" extra length in a track only equals 1" on the ground. Thanks for the review!

      @matt-justice  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yessir, lots to say on this subject... probably dedicate a video to it. It warmed up and we lost snow, waiting for a storm to ride again. Cliff notes: the Polaris display is my favorite by far, but some of it is preferential. For instance, I don’t want to look down at the display to see how much I’m adjusting the hand warmers digitally on the Cat. Some people love it, but it takes your attention off of riding, and I prefer the old school way of feeling the adjustment and keep on moving down the trail. These are first impressions, could change with more seat time!!

    Sounds like you need to take some compression out of the front. It's going to lift the inside ski if the suspension can't compress. Best way to setup your suspension is to start full soft and work up from there. Just keep running the same section of trial over and over until you get it dialed on how you want it. It takes a little time to set it up properly but it is 100% worth it.

The Assault is more suited to those that ride mostly off trail with some trail riding. A better comparison to the Riot would be the Switchback

    • @softwashscience
      @softwashscience 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matt Justice [Clever Leverage] if you want to save $ just sell the stock skis and get the stock gripper skis like an sks or rmk would have. The ca pro are better but the gripper are great too and lighter. The stock pro steer are way to small for the size track they should come with grippers like the sks. Also lift your sled up in the air and make sure the tips are pointing up and if not adjust or buy new ski rubbers. Lastly check your toe you want the skis toed out about 1/8” to 3/16” on each side. Once you iron out those things start adjusting and fine tuning ski pressure and the chassis and shocks until your dialed in. Polaris sleds and sxs’s always have a few things that really piss you off cause you know they know but you still have to tweak them.

      Its a crossover lol don’t get butt hurt the assault has been on the top for awhile now in this class and maybe you green guys can bring something better next season. Cat is known and will remain known for bad suspension in sxs’s and sleds this is not anything new. They are known for flat cornering and thats easily achieved with a chassis thats very low with minimal suspension travel and unfortunately it makes them ride bad. In a cross over sled you need it to be good off trail as well and the riot really falls short but maybe next year....

    ROTATE the Polaris bars TOWARD you. I have owned 6 Poos with these bars and those are NOT adjusted right. And: Why would a 850(840) NOT be expected snappier/stronger? Of course it would be. The dynos back this up. Plus Polaris stock clutching is hard to beat. Lower center of gravity feel: SO THAT so where Cat hid the extra 45 pounds! Genius. The constant wheelies and less planted feel on Polaris (But more fun): Sounds like the front skid shock needs a turn or two less preload.
    If you are trail guy but want a Polaris--well first--WHY would you want a 144 or 146 anything? Buy a Indy 137. Just a few years ago 137 was practically a mountain sled. So the 137 Indy: Enough off trail with the right track. Stable. Planted. But less playful (Keep reading). Better suspension and geometry on bumps.
    I have a 129 Indy to go with my Assault (Wife's sled) and it is LESS playful more planted and I pick my Assault for a ride every time. I have owned all three brands BTW--and Polaris just pushes all the buttons. Whip it all about and shred and PLAY! Like a dirt bike. THAT is what a playful sled is and should be good at.
