Each person in a family has a job and an opinion. The boys like working with the machines and dad has his cameras. I'd bet none of them want to leave a warm bed and go outside and work. Such is life. Even little Henry has to learn. Momma and papa won't always be there.
Ya, except they gotta remember that it’s dad’s income. They wouldn’t be living in a big, beautiful house and driving those expensive machines if it wasn’t for dad making movies.
Split the wood. You'll be glad you did in the end. Smaller pieces have more surface to burn. Sometimes full logs just charcoal out, then it's hard to get them to burn.
I'm sorry about your back, especially as you're so busy. When we're in discomfort we tend not to breath properly, so as I reminded myself yesterday, don't forget to breath!
Larger logs tend to burn slower and cooler. That means more soot and creosote, more frequent cleaning. When I burned wood in a cabin as my sole source of heat I found it more efficient to burn split wood during the day and control how fast it burned with the damper. I would put in a large log at night with the goal of not having to stoke it during the night and still having coals in the morning. Remember that part of your efficiency equation has to be the increased cleaning so flammable oily by-products didn't build up.
Mr Justin,I'm 54 years of age,in my younger years I would run at least 3 miles a day, sometime 8,I worked out daily, there's no telling what's happening to your back,at any moment anything can happen,I chalked it up to age, keep on keeping on,may the Lord continue to bless you and your family.
Josiah! I'm proud of your 100%. I didn't expect anything less. Thanks for putting up with your Dad making all these videos for us. No easy task (on top of Farming, On top of Helene's hell) You and your family are awe inspiring to soooo many.❤😊
Wood heats four times...when you cut the tree down, cut it into manageable pieces, split it, and then, finally stack it! Also heats the house...guess that's five! One Winter I cut, split, stacked 12 cords of wood! Don't want to heat with fire wood ever again!!! Love to watch how you are dealing with such extreme damage to your farm. Prayers for you and your family.
Ok first, it's so warm where you are! 😊 My boys complained the other day helping me milk at -13 but we are in Wyoming so comes with the territory 😅 the heater in the water will help the nipples not freeze. We have a big inc tote with chicken nipples and put a trough heater in and have no problems. I don't know if you ever even see these but I had horrible sciatica problems for years like emergency room pain over and over. What finally helped was stretching my quads frequently while also building my glute and core muscles. I found when my back was supported correctly and not being pulled by right quads the pain left and hasn't come back for 3 years now. Hopefully you see this, give it a try (took me a month or so before seeing it starting to work but it works!)
Congratulations, Josiah, on getting your drivers license. I realize you all have been busy over the past 6 months, and a lot has happened. I'm at a loss as to why you would wait until Winter to do firewood. Although it may be dry, preparing early makes more sense beats being out in the cold when you don't need to be.
My uncle had a furnace like that,he would put in a combo of split logs and rounds. It seems like the rounds were the size of a salad plate or smaller, but he made sure they were at max length. Grading the land down to the creek is a great idea. We had a river (smallish) at the edge of our property. The worst decision the county made was to not dredge it in the summer like farmer did for centuries. The rock filled in and the river became a trickle until spring rain, then all the farms flooded. They went back to letting the farmers remove the rock for driveways , problem solved.
That kettle bell move...from laying on the floor to standing was my favorite. It also caused me to go to the chiropractor every week or two....even though it didn't hurt doing it.
An old flat sheet also works...a little more room than a tablecloth to build on. We also used the sheet to throw over a card table to make a fort. We kept the sheet folded and ready for kids on top of the big box of Legos.
Love your attitude Justin! The atmosphere around your place must be fantastic! Learning how to work together! Sometimes it might be tough but in the long run there is alot of love in the air! Your children are learning how to to survive ! They are going to appreciate you and Becca when they get older! Always put Our Lord first above everything! Your children will see that as they get older as well! Thanks for always sharing! Blessings!❤️
I spent the first 11 minutes of this video worrying they were going to not see the comments from everyone about the whole log thing .... Praise be no comment reading necessary, Justin is on it!! Woohoooooo!!
Good to cut trees and make firewood in the winter. Trees have less sap when dormant and in summer it is too hot to do so much exercise. We do double hats when it is very cold. 2 woolly ones or, one woolly and one felt/brimmed hat to keep the sleet out of your eyes. And get a mesh guard attached to your chainsaw helmet, then you always have eye protection. But just getting up and keep going is the best! You all have my respect.
Try giving the chickens fresh water in the evening. It will breakup easier in the morning and the sun will keep it from freezing during the day. Something I learned long ago
Something to think about, what if your ladies need to load the boiler? Aiming for efficiency is worth the effort. Josiah, your dad is right in concentrating on getting the task completed. Then you can look back and know you won’t have to come back to it and feel the amazing sense of accomplishment!
Hi Justin. In regards to your siatic pain. I suggest you use a tennis ball. Place the ball in the dimple of your lower back, lay on it on the floor or bed, and wriggle around on it. It massages the area and loosens it up. Do it when you need to. 😊
Hello Good luck on the test Josiah. You should look up the kind of boats they where in the north where it gets really cold like in Alaska. for all of you on the farm. YAY YAY YAY JOSIAH. What about cutting the logs smaller & just in half.
@3:15 Jonah is confusing temperature of matter and the state(or phase) or matter. He's right to a certain extent, it can't get more frozen but it can surely get colder. And the greater the temperature difference the faster things will freeze. It's exactly like the reverse when boiling water on the stove. Once the water is boiling it can't get more boiling, it has to turn to steam, but it can boil and convert water to steam faster. So, the colder it is the faster water will convert to ice. There will be more ice that forms over the same amount of time.
Wisconsinite here.. if youre single digits or below, things dont work. The slow flowing water freezes, vehicles dont work, pipes burst, hoses feeze, your boogers feeze, your eyes hurt.. its a whole different experience than when you're within 10 degrees of 32'F. 🙂
THANK YOU for longer visits, the typical Mom's request~ Yes multiples - do that with all kinds of glasses bc well everyone knows... guitar picks, toothpicks, boxes of tissues all around..
I do not like cold weather! I live in south central KY and I am thinking I have not moved far enough south yet lol. I did watch a video on a woman who built her home inside a commercial high tunnel. That would be great for the winter!
There are some great strengthening back videos. They have helped me, I just have to remind myself to do it everyday even though I’m feeling good, oh, also, magnesium and collagen help as well.
At 57 years old small homestead but have been a diesel mechanic for 37 years. Back pains are the worst but I found rest is your best friend. I would suggest stop the work outs for a bit because you are doing plenty of work to keep it aggravated. Just a suggestion though you know your body just wanted to share.
I know that back pain can be debilitating. I have found that if I eat foods with high fructose corn syrup all of my joints and my back as well will start to hurt and I will have limited movement in tose joints. Just "food" for thought. Thanks for all you do and for taking us along on the adventure.
Ok. Like I tell my 74 yo husband, When you hurt your back, STOP and ice for 15 minutes and alternate with heat for an Hour!!! Or at the very least as soon as chores are done. Better to lose a couple hours of a day than a week! Swinging that bell doesn’t help 😳
I think cutting the rounds to longer than your standard 16-18” length is a good idea for a wood boiler. If your boiler requires seasoned wood, however, you best split all your rounds. Trees kept in log/pole form dry much more slowly. Hope your back feels better soon!

Justin make sure you change out your soles in your boot at least annually! I work construction and I was getting really bad back pains and out of the blue one day I asked the boot store a question one day and that turned out to change my inner padding soles in my boots. After a week my back pain went away then after a year I started feeling that pain again and changed them out again and now it's yearly I get new ones. In addition to my un-asked for advice I learnt ayervedic healing via my bharatan (India) Mum. We only fasted 1 day per week. I love my veggies, but I also have small potions of meat, plenty of eggs, daily (the western world states: don't eat too many eggs b/c of cholesterol Which is total b.s.) Basically, Just STRETCHING your body and mind.... you already stretch the Mind, Justin heehee) less pain, is what I wish for You. 😊
WHAT THE HECK! At the 15:16 mark during your chicken minute it looks like a crow comes falling out if the sky! I can’t image it being missed in editing. It’s right behind your head!
Superior WI - next to Duluth. Waiting on possible -30 below and 40 mph winds in the am. We don't cancel school - just tell the kids to wear a hoodie - just in case!
Do rock terraces wide enough for 4' chicken tractors. do a rock apron watering entry for the creek lined with a hot wire. Have Randolph coach the boys on building storage sheds from lumber off the land. Those rounds will burn if first you addcsplit wood to build coals.
Split the wood... that poor kid just dropped it on his bad leg... it made me hurt seeing him grab his leg n try not to cry... i cryed for him... hes gome thru so much it be a same to cause injury to it again... plus younger kids n wife would be able to take wood too if you and or older boys are not around or cant do it...
We have an outdoor wood burning stove . You are not going to be able to get that large log into the stove 1. You will have to shove the log into the stove , it will get hung up on the wood that is already in there and then it’s hot so how do you get that wood in or out. 2. That log will take for ever to burn. 3. Is your door wide enough for that log to get into your stove.. it’s hard work but so rewarding for the warmth . We also heat our water. Saves on the electric bill.❤️
Justin... Did you know that ya don't have to fast heavily? Most reasons for the back problems is to eat more vegetables (than meat) Yep am going to edit this... and besides advice upon food... stand up tall, raise arms/hands straight up over your head (as if you're asking universal God for energy) Then take a slow bow, arms extended and try touching the floor.THIS Separates the bones in spine... Hang there for a few mins. Move arms around in gentle swinging motion. Then slowly un-bow to standing position. This has always helped my back pains and sciatic nerve to calm down. I literally feel your pain, little advice from old tree.
In addition to my un-asked for advice I learnt ayervedic healing via my bharatan (India) Mum. We only fasted 1 day per week. I love my veggies, but I also love fish, pork, goose, chicken and eat plenty of eggs, daily (the western world states don't eat too many eggs b/c of cholesterol Which is total b.s.) Just STRETCH your body and mind) less pain is what I wish for You. 😊
The twice heating wood.... we thought Daddy told us that because he raced hydroplanes in the summer,, so we always ended up cutting wood in the cold...lol
Premier has a heated waterfountain that even works down to -41°! Works fantastic! (How's it going on that "Cold Weather [-41°] chick-shaw Challenge I sent you last week?) 😉
Jonah should probably be careful with weight of those logs with his hip replacement, I'm old but I have a weight limit as to what I can lift. Sure wouldn't want him to get hurt. Congratulations Josiah!!
From the amount of smoke coming out of your saw I wonder what kind of oil you use for your chainsaw mix? I use Amsoil Dominator at 50:1 and get very little smoke. I'm an amsoil dealer, so if you're interested send me a DM and I'll get you information on how to buy it at wholesale cost.
Congrats to Josiah for passing the written test 100%! You go, young man, you will be an awesome driver.
I love it when the boys give you a hard time about filiming bc they are trying to get work done! Raising them right!
Haha... Justin allows his family to have a voice
Beep beeep beep... the moment of: "dad, let's stay focused on task at hand"
Love this family!

I would too
Ya, except they gotta remember that it’s dad’s income. They wouldn’t be living in a big, beautiful house and driving those expensive machines if it wasn’t for dad making movies.
"Lord willing and the creek don't rise" has a whole new perspective after the hurricane
Split the wood. You'll be glad you did in the end. Smaller pieces have more surface to burn. Sometimes full logs just charcoal out, then it's hard to get them to burn.
100% agree about split logs and whole logs.
Go Josiah!🎉 100% on written and drive test!!😲congratulations!
I'm sorry about your back, especially as you're so busy.
When we're in discomfort we tend not to breath properly, so as I reminded myself yesterday, don't forget to breath!
Oh yes... and stay warm 😂 seriously though the cold will make it worse and don't do full fast in cold weather. You need more energy, not less
Congratulations, Josiah!!! Way to go!

Congrats Josiah! 100% on the driver test is Fantastic! I thought when I took the test, I thought 96 was good! 👍🌟👏😎🤗
That kettle bell move...from laying on the floor to standing was my favorite. It also caused me to go to the chiropractor every week or two....even though it didn't hurt doing it.
Way to go, Josiah; great accomplishment! All the kids do so well! Gideon is a great big brother to watch Henry, too. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦🌻
My husband has a bad back from military service. He uses a back brace when working and it helps with pain.
we used a vinyl tablecloth for Legos it made for quick clean up and we would just put the build on top of the tablecloth
An old flat sheet also works...a little more room than a tablecloth to build on. We also used the sheet to throw over a card table to make a fort. We kept the sheet folded and ready for kids on top of the big box of Legos.
Josiah Big congratulations! ❤❤❤
Congratulations Josiah awesome job You will be a good driver

Yay Josiah! 100 percenter! Now, to get some driving hours in, and before you know it, you will be a licensed driver.
Beveling that creek is a great idea. It is also giving you additional flood capacity!
Something to think about, what if your ladies need to load the boiler?
Aiming for efficiency is worth the effort.
Josiah, your dad is right in concentrating on getting the task completed. Then you can look back and know you won’t have to come back to it and feel the amazing sense of accomplishment!

Good morning. Yes. Smaller logs work well. Hope it all works for you.

Hey, we love our dairy goats 😂
the only thing about using whole logs is that the can catch or bridge in the box and the fire will go out.
Yey Josiah, 100%! Bravo! Blessings!
“How does it get more freezing” 😆 yess… how?! lol
Freezes faster.

I do not like cold weather! I live in south central KY and I am thinking I have not moved far enough south yet lol. I did watch a video on a woman who built her home inside a commercial high tunnel. That would be great for the winter!
we keep any wood under dinner plate size as whole logs. we use split wood to start fires, and whoel logs for the night time
There are some great strengthening back videos. They have helped me, I just have to remind myself to do it everyday even though I’m feeling good, oh, also, magnesium and collagen help as well.
Lot of people on the internet who don't seem to know much about burning wood.

They don’t eat that. But he does have Lyme. That causes inflammation.
@@preppingmama Thank you for the reply. I am a new subscriber and did not have the backstory information. Thank you.
As long as it is above single digits you can put bottles of water in your tank or trough to keep it from freezing.
It works in Michigan 😊
Ok. Like I tell my 74 yo husband,
When you hurt your back, STOP and ice for 15 minutes and alternate with heat for an Hour!!!
Or at the very least as soon as chores are done. Better to lose a couple hours of a day than a week! Swinging that bell doesn’t help 😳
Stretch Stretch Stretch. Traction helps. I use a wood brace in my barn. Hips popped back in place after 4 years of continuous pain.
been enjoyin the longer videos! God Bless Y'all ♥
Congrats to Josiah ! Bundle up, it is So Cold out.
I think cutting the rounds to longer than your standard 16-18” length is a good idea for a wood boiler. If your boiler requires seasoned wood, however, you best split all your rounds. Trees kept in log/pole form dry much more slowly.
Hope your back feels better soon!
well done Josiah hugssss
Happy Day💚
I think you should do some sort of trellis thing in that area. You have to do the dirt work anyways to fill the hole in and I think a lot of of that soil, where the high tunnel was is ruined, and there could be a variety of chemicals on that dirt now, does the new location of the high tunnel shade the garden, something to keep in mind, I think trellis berry bushes next to the river would be resourceful Barry bushes bring birds in to the area which take care of a variety of pest problems in the garden

Also move that green house close to your wood boiler and during the winter you could store wood in it to keep it out of the rain and snow.
I'm fasting 18 with 6 hours for the last year ( eat only between 12pm - 6pm), after 6pm only water, and I never felt better. Hope it helps!
Same here works great
Just a question, the yard, in front of the pole barn, why not have a Permanent fence on two or three sides. With hard panel, like the front chicken pen. And when you use it latter in season just add gates to the sides connect to pole barn 2:34
Can you put a little mineral salt in the stationary waters?
That's pretty cold! It's about the same temperatures as here in Alberta, Canada. -15 C.
rounds will generally burn slower than split wood. If it gets real cold, rounds might have trouble keeping up.
Spread out all that area and make a beach lol 😆 or just easy access
Did you have someone fix thermostat? That's seems like way too much wood used each day
Have you heard about the Pompa program? They say they can help get rid of the Lyme disease. Its a 6 month program. A little pricey. I just started the program.

Because it freezes very fast😮

you should look into using peptides for your back. i healed a herniated disk in my back with Tb-500 and BPC-157
You should split at least oncee, it will burn much better than rounds.
you probably should bring in extra cow manure and compost plus gravel
My gym teacher called, and he wants his gym shorts back. 😂😂😂😂
We have an outdoor wood burning stove .

Justin...
Did you know that ya don't have to fast heavily?
Most reasons for the back problems is to eat more vegetables (than meat)
Yep am going to edit this...
and besides advice upon food... stand up tall, raise arms/hands straight up over your head (as if you're asking universal God for energy)
Then take a slow bow, arms extended and try touching the floor.THIS Separates the bones in spine...

The twice heating wood.... we thought Daddy told us that because he raced hydroplanes in the summer,, so we always ended up cutting wood in the cold...lol
Oh Justin yall just split that wood and keep your furnace from having problems down the road!!
All coups have to be racoon and opossum proof. I learned that the hard way myself.
Congrats Josiah…ny heart is squeezing a bit seeing the 2nd born now becoming an adult with his drivers license❤❤❤
Don't burn green wood. Too much humidity in them making soot and using energy to boil off the wet instead of heating your water. Boiling logs is fine.
I wonder if the pain comes back because its cold out and you aren’t getting as much vitamin D as you get in the summer/spring.
Great seeing Jonah on the video. I feel he avoids the camera
Get a bird bath heater. My chickens water never freezes nor does the nipples.
You ate something you are specifically not good with. My husband gets back pain if he has Christmas spices
Premier has a heated waterfountain that even works down to -41°! Works fantastic! (How's it going on that "Cold Weather [-41°] chick-shaw Challenge I sent you last week?) 😉
Ping Pong TABLE, LOL!
Jonah should probably be careful with weight of those logs with his hip replacement, I'm old but I have a weight limit as to what I can lift. Sure wouldn't want him to get hurt. Congratulations Josiah!!
All I could think of was don’t step on a Lego
From the amount of smoke coming out of your saw I wonder what kind of oil you use for your chainsaw mix? I use Amsoil Dominator at 50:1 and get very little smoke. I'm an amsoil dealer, so if you're interested send me a DM and I'll get you information on how to buy it at wholesale cost.
15:10 I cant belive you are putting the tunnel back at the same spot. And i thought people would learn if the suffer...
Prolo therapy for you, Justin!
