Instead of concrete blocks for a retaining wall, try gabion cages. You fill the cages with rocks to make the wall. I have seen one installed along a road that kept washing out and it has been holding up great.

@@theJustinRhodesShow You can build your own. We did for flood protection along the Mississippi River when I worked for Soil Conservation Service. Saved a LOT of money and they work. I know they called this mess a 1000 year flood, but it happened--everything just lined up for it, but it will more than likely happen again. The Gabion walls are effective and the way the water came through there, they will not move.

Living in Northern Alberta, Canada, For my own preference, I greatly reduce my winter chores. I only keep 3-4 chickens over winter for eggs and then we only keep animals that grow from April until October for food animals. Of course the garden is for the same time period also- lots of root crops in our root cellar and chicken in the freezer.

2:36 man I can relate to this. Of course, all I have are chickens and a big garden. However, I’m in upstate New York and these are our temperatures for a good four months out of the year. So I feel ya! I understand where you’re coming from. I have to drag water daily for my group of birds. I have over 100. And they need water every single day and they don’t care what the temperature is. I look forward to April. Luckily so far this year we’ve had a very mild start of winter. January and February are normally our deep freeze. Negative temperatures. No fun. So it can be a nightmare. We struggle through every single winter and make it to the other side. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I actually totally get the nightmare or dream. My Husband was driving home on Nov. 30th from the feed store and had a heart attack. His heart stopped 3 times and he has burns from the paddles because the turned it up so high. After life evaluations this week us being 52 & 53 with adult children who are not able to relieve us of homesteading responsibility it's been a sobering 2 weeks. We are in North West Florida, the hurricane made land fall less than 30 miles from here and those downed trees and things are just gonna wait because instead of planning the next expansion we need to regroup and repair and re-enter our goals. Good luck guys, we definitely should have started this when the kids were younger. Our youngest was 18 when we realized the city was not the life we wanted.❤❤❤❤

Might want to check your and Pop’s homeowner’s insurance to see if they can help knock off the cost of those concrete blocks and culvert pipe that you absolutely should get to fix the road/driveway for safety reasons. Gabions are only as strong as the wire cages; they’re good, but have their limitations and probably better used as secondary/minor protection. (Other people are more qualified to compare/contrast.) The skid steer and excavator can’t lift or slide those? You might have friends with equipment that can, or rent, charging to your insurance.

I have a few suggestions. First the creek bed that washed away needs heavy , large concrete or stone blocks because construction blacks will wash out next hurricane. You need the weight. Second done cut the large trees. They can be sold or cut up for lumber. Both are valuable. Use the long thin trees on the Slope to slow the water down and prevent erosion.

It’s just on my mind for some reason, but my mom use to make us the best hamburger gravy. She only seasoned it with salt, and used milk and flour, but she always used the right amounts, and never measured. I’m thinking ground up pork would also make some good meat gravy like the beef. Pour it over some thick sliced Texas styled garlic bread that is topped with a shredded lettuce and maybe thickly shredded carrots, all covered with either a thousand island dressing or ranch dressing, then top it with the ground pork meat gravy. I think I’m getting hungry!

Still works for permaculture farming. Opening gates is easier than moving fencing. If farming is fun the kids might stay when they are old enough to leave. Hey wearing a vest over a sweatshirt works too. How about digging and cementing in a pool at the bottom of that stream that is running and forget the tank. Great video. So much variety of things to do. It looks like your paddocks are larger. That is awesome. Thank you.

There is a point after 40 something that you start cutting back on what you do on the farm. You get rid of the critters that don't stay in the fence. I can't imagine hanging fence in my 50s. The only way I could do this is on perfectly flat land, no mountains or creeks that flood the fields. You have to have a plan to cut back or put more weight on the kids.

This all depends on how many wrecks you had. My equine wrecks are why I need a walker. I know sawmill work! That can be fun if you have a buddy to help peavey a log onto the mill. Spinning a log around with a cant hook and no peavey is a pain. When you are older, you figure out how to best use your time, which is why your Dad runs circles around younger people!

I wait all year for this weather, it's a dream to me. $400/1200 for a wood chipper is extortion, you're better off buying one yourself because they're that handy. We run two splitters and one chipper.
Your best bet for the wall is gabion walls, and that's from someone that has built walls for 30 years, and whose family have been stoneworkers for a few hundred.

The nightmare is back problems. Coming the barrel on the ground then lifting. Moving and lifting again. Whip house on hydrant, 2" bulkhead fitting and valve on the barrel. Cheap easy usable.. Best part no lifting. Wife did say work smarter.

Why did you go to the trouble and expense of building a "MUD ROOM" if you're going to leave your shoes on the outside porch?

    • @theJustinRhodesShow

Yeh... touche. We have too many spots that we could leave shoes! But the mud room is turning out awesome for storage and freezers.

If you don't want to build an engineered, expensive retaining wall (I wouldn't), you can add fill out to 10 ft of so from the edge of the pole barn slab and slope away at a slope equal or less than what you see natural slopes in your soils. This might move the creek back to about where it was before the hurricane.

Try surrounding the ever flowing water tub with dirt or other insulation and bury the water lines both coming in and going out. Then, the main heat loss will only be the surface of the water.

Bags of concrete set in place can be used to build a retaining wall.

You have some big logs...you could use to make giant Lincoln logs into retainer wall for poly tunnel fill..on river side......and possibly along river a straight long wall up stream beyond barn....to back fill behind...with big rocks....pour some cement behind after filling with rocks by barn... to keep rocks and logs in place for future floods.❤ use what you are given...the answers are there.

In the cow water could you try & add a ball with the system to keep it unthawed?
Would it be worth while to pull back some of the stones out of the creek to creek higher at the edge to possibly be used later.

    • @JoanneLayman
      @JoanneLayman หลายเดือนก่อน

@kayashmore4296 'unthawed' (no such word) = frozen - what you mean to say is prevent from freezing
