As a huge Whitney fan, I agree that the crystal clear tone is not there (bodyguard album). The rasp is appearing but that's not necessarily a bad thing (health wise maybe) but the sound added to the darker tone...some people like that. It wasn't the bright girlish tone you hear in "How will i know" or "I wanna dance with somebody". There is a video on TH-cam about the transition in Whitney's voice and they do a pretty good job highlighting using clips. You can't tell me this is the same girly tone from the 80s Whitney. Plus her tone took on a darker tone in the bodyguard album. She had a clear tone in that album but I disagree it was girly. She was pregnant and going through hormones, plus her voice had fully matured. By The Preachers wife she's still in her prime but she's hitting notes in her middle register that are just phenomenal. You could attribute that to a little rasp but still clear tone. Girly it was not at that stage of the game. But again it's mature and womanly. Whitney's my idol and this was one of her best albums. (Also don't take my word for it.. Whitney herself said in a radio interview with Wendy Williams round this time that she joked about sounding like a man when she wakes up. I actually dig the smokey tone. Something you can hear in Deborah cox voice, slight rasp that makes it edgy)
