Michael Dowd: Religious Naturalism and the Postdoom Worldview - Reverence for Reality #4

Recorded in December 2021, this conversation with Michael Dowd was not originally intended to be posted. However, after Michael's sudden death in October 2023, his widow, RNA member Connie Barlow, not only encouraged the posting the conversation but took lead on producing this edited version.
Michael and Connie lived on the road from April 2002, until COVID put an end to their itinerant ministry in September 2020. TH-cam already has an abundance of videos of Michael’s presentations in liberal churches and secular settings from those years. This video is unique in that it was privately filmed, and thus Michael converses in a very personal way about his own life trajectory.
Michael’s early presentations drew upon the worldview of Thomas Berry, and thus focused on the “epic of evolution.” Around 2013 (and amplified in 2015), his focus shifted to foregrounding “ecology as theology,” while the deep-time, evolutionary understanding still served as foundation.
By 2019, his readings on the rise-and-fall of civilizations convinced Michael that the relentlessly worsening climate upset, along with ongoing biodiversity loss, doomed this civilization to the consequences of planetary “ecocide.” Hence, the shift from awareness to acceptance of “doom” - and then to a “postdoom” worldview for thinking, feeling, and acting.
