That’s (luckily) how I got my highlights. Can’t say the same for my best friend (we have different hairstylists).

Put cotton underneath it. I'm one of those stylist too that have trouble with bleeding. Also don't just good lightener there and make its thin enough of a section.

Try applying lightener a few inches below top of foil and then backward stroke the lightener to the top! Still gets close, adds better diffusion and no bleeding! When starting with brush and applying from root/top of foil downward...if you apply any pressure or push down it pushes the bleach into the middle of the roots in the section...or completely thru. Either one eventually causes bleeding by weight or foils etc.
But doing it this way...even if my foil slips down from root any.... bleach still processes but no bleeding from over saturated root!
Also...be aware some lightener swells!! Like I absolutely LOVE Schwarzkopf lightener, but oh boy does it swell!! Compared to Matrix
Or Redken! Big learning curve for me! But I will say once learning...I knew to stay off of roots of section...it would get lightened...no worries!! But the great part about the swelling... No more unevenness!! I'm talking foilyage, highlights,.... even thicker ribbon weaves!! Didn't have to underpaint, paint foil first ..nothing. the swelling would make sure every section was covered! I stopped using any other lightener because of this! My gosh the uneven splotchy lifting I would get when using Redken!!! ...I actually hate their lightener with a passion because of the mistakes and extra time fixing them that it caused me!!
Also...and i was guilty of this for a long time..... You really do have to measure your lightener and developer!! I would always eyeball it or go by consistency ...and I promise you... it isn't nearly as effective as measuring exact ratio as directions state. These are just a couple of my trial and errors and HUGE game changers I've experienced along the way!
Hope this helps someone out there!! 💕

Hidden dark spots even when saturated 😬

Your sections are too thick probably. Or your mixture is too thick.
Try painting the underside of a subsection and then put in your foil and paint as usual, that way you’ll be “sandwiching” your section with lightener and there’s no way you’ll miss anything.
And if you have a retouch, just do the same but only up until the line of demarcation so you don’t overlap.

I agree....but I paint lightener on the foil....then drop the section onto the foil and apply lighter onto the top. When saturating the top your also spreading and evening the lightener on the foil all along the underside of the section. Way easier to me, also keeps the hair and for from slipping at all all!!
If your using a foil loaded cooboard, this method saves so much time as well as even results!!! Give it a try!!
