Both Chris' and Patty's fathers were Eastern Kentucky Coal Miners. This is a great tribute to their fathers.
Song write Darrell Scott wrote the song after getting the inspiration from his visits to Harlan County when his dad was tracing his family's history. Scott would notice that the sun seemed to come up around ten in the morning and appeare to go down around three in the day. Darrell Scott would also discover the gravestone that said "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive". Darrell Scott's father's father was a coal miner there.

I didnt know there fathers where coal minners.😮 the song hits home for anyone who has felt trapped by poverty and doing what you have to for a doller, even if it kills you.😢
My Grandfather, My great Uncle’s, and my Great Grandfather were all coal miners in Eastern Kentucky. A very hard life for a very proud people.
My mom tells stories of working the tobacco field from the time she was old enough to walk in the Appalachia Mountains. Love the storytelling of this song and about the brave coal miners

So so sorry about your father. I lost my Daddy suddenly in 2017. I was 55-no matter what age you are it is hard. No way around it. Stay on your knees in prayer and give yourself grace. It will take time. But it will get easier- I promise. 🙏🏻

CMA Awards: Patty Loveless joins Chris Stapleton in rare live appearance, Chris Stapleton blew the roof off the “Kentucky Rising” flood relief concert by bringing out Patty Loveless in a rare live appearance. At Wednesday’s CMA Awards in Nashville, the two artists gave a highly anticipated encore.
Stapleton and Loveless performed “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” on Wednesday’s CMAs. The song, penned by Darrell Scott, was recorded by Loveless for her 2001 album, “Mountain Soul." She opened the song on her own, accompanied only by Stapleton's guitar - with all the passion, finesse and soul you'd expect - before trading verses with the singer and wife/bandmate Morgane Stapleton.
This song means a lot to me. All four of my grandparents are from Eastern Kentucky.
