School has been crazy- I have been learning a lot! I managed to do this between my classes, work, and other projects. The frame rate is a bit low and I couldn't find the energy to color it, but animating a clip like this was fun! I enjoyed the process a lot. And now that I finally have access to some better software, and I've finished this, I am going to be trying out a bunch of new stuff! look forward to that.

Caduceus owned that whole night, probably unintentionally. Like at the start of the dinner when Eodwulf asked, "What are you supposed to be?" and he responded, "A vegetarian."
If I was stronger, and somehow more filled with hubris than I already am, I was going to do “M9 and Trent’s dinner’s greatest hits” or something like that. But alas. Tal was on his A game FOR SURE though

Can you imagine what it must be like to be Trent. Like, you think you're going to have a fun night of mindgames with one of your former students and demonstrate to his current allies how powerful you are, and then one of them, specifically the one who looks like what would happen if a cow went to an arts school, and does the verbal equivalent of pantsing you and pushing you down a flight of stairs. Like. Caleb is the one who controls fire, but apparently Caduceus is the one who burns people.

The thing is: there is no malice behind Caduceus's words; only pity, commiseration, and disappointment. And that is what burns the most.
An almost all-powerful Archmage being honestly pitied and called a fool by a 9-INT pink cow-man who didn't even know how money worked six months prior; and the worst part is: he's right.
Remember this is the same cow man who thanked King Dwendal for what was essentially an insult (You look perhaps not as educated as one would assume - Punishment and Politics)
I think that makes this moment even more brilliant.
In the recent episode of talks machina in which he appeared , Taliesen said Caduceus wasn't even trying to roast him. He was apparently holding back laughter because he thought Trent was the dumbest person alive and knew somebody needed to let him know that before somebody (else) got hurt.

Ikithon boasts that "I have spent my life bearing knives", thinking that he is somehow demonstrating his invulnerability. Instead, he just exposes his greatest weakness to an attack from an unexpected quarter - something that he has gone to great lengths and performed horrendous acts to guard against. And Caduceus Clay, without a sharp edge on him, tears it right open.

At first I wasn't sure about Cadeuceus, Molly was boisterous and bright and a wildfire of a character and I thought Caduceus was going to be played as the opposite. But over time we got to see he was a man of introspection and simple joys, not a wildfire but a candle to keep warm by and light the night.
That is actually a perfect description
He shines in a different way
You're not wrong. There is alot to him, and while molly was loud and boisterous sure, cad is that quiet one that thinks his words out and the more he trusts you the more his inner wild child will show. Just look at what he does when around his family.
It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.
I have had this sneaking suspicion that Mollys death was a consensual set up. At the very least Talesin had clearly made a goof with his stats, hence why vicious mockery never worked. He clearly says he thought his abilities were wisdom based due to the way the spells are worded.
Nothing worse than messing up your stats and failing miserably at the things your meant be good at, insert every reaction shot of Marisha or Liam when they fail a history roll.
Molly is like Firefly the TV series, he ended before he did anything stupid or messed up to many times. So he will always be remembered... Time to mix up some eggs and hot sauce in my pants and cover my wang in it
Intelligence is looking at the chaotic world and finding order. Wisdom is looking at strength and seeing vulnerability.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put tomatoes in a fruit smoothie.
Charisma is being able to convince someone that a tomato smoothie is just ketchup.

Tal openly says on Talks Machina, this isn't meant to be "rude" per se.
He's simply pointing out that Trent is the most idiotic person that he has ever met, and due to how he lives everyone else refuses to tell him, so Cad, someone who does not care who he is, tells him.
It was an autistuc kindness, genuinly wantingnto help but also saying, my whole stick is caring for th2 dwad and not even my almost endlwss mercy is enough to care for you
When Cad straight up implies that when Trent dies no one would even notice or care but does it in the most polite, elequent way that it sounds like a passive disagreement on philosophy I realized i dont want to be roasted by Taliesin.
The spirit of no mercy percy just possessed Caduceus and roasted a level 20 mage out of his own house
I don't remember where I saw it, but someone pointed out that when Cad was introduced he said his job was "to remember people." So him telling Trent that "I hope you will find someone to mourn you when you are gone" basically was him saying through omission "_I will not mourn you_." From a grave cleric, that's terrifying.
TBF had it not been for Caleb wanting Trent to see justice caduceus probably would’ve killed him himself

It's how to verbally eviscerate someone without even swearing. Not to mention, Caduceus is telling Trent one of the worst things (to him). Basically that Caduceus, a man whose life work is to comfort people about death and to honor the dead, will never do either to Trent.
I think the best part about this was that Cad is the only one who could say such a thing to such a scathing effect. If Fjord, Caleb, even Jester, had done this it wouldn’t have hit as hard because unlike with the other members of the M9 Cad said this with no malice or intentions of provocation. This was not framed as an insult like it would have been by the others, it was just brutal, unfeeling honesty. Cad spoke the truth as a form of advice with pure intentions, or as pure intentions one can have in a situation like this, instead of it being a jab against Trent to humiliate him. And that makes what Cad said so much stronger of a full on backhanded slap to Trent because he just had the mirror pointed at him and told to look at where his actions have gotten him and where they will take him if he doesn’t change.
Because as it stands there is nobody around to remember Trent as a person when he dies, only those who would remember him as the monster he is.
the best part of it is that if Trent actually *listened* to what Cad was saying here, the final years of his life might not be spent in paranoid misery, they might be enjoyable
In a game like D&D that is largely driven by violence it’s so easy to create a character driven by negative emotions (anger, greed, sadness). Tal does such a brilliant job playing a character full of compassion for all and malice for none. He is filled with love for everything in the world, so when he’s killing he’s not enjoying the bloodshed, just helping the misguided pass on.
"Pain doesn't make people. Love does."
I've heard that line a few times now and read a few times as well, but right now it just keeps ringing in my head. I just now realizes how incredible of a moment that was his whole speech was really, honestly good. And he's right.
"The pain is inconsequential, it's love that saves them."
I'll try to remember that.

Yes, it's definitely true. I'm not just the sum of my trauma, and I would never have realized that if I hadn't found people who actually care for me and appreciate me for who I am.

Among lots of other things, Tal explains what was going through Cad's head at this moment and it's hilarious.
Just to point out one of the things I thought made total sense to me, is the fact that Cad thinks Trent is the dumbest person he has ever met in his life.
And when it comes to emotional intelligence, well, he might be completely right.
Edit because grammar mistakes were made and I forgot to say this was a beautiful animation (hands are especially fucked up things to draw in my opinion, so the close on icky's hands were awesome)

This manages to perfectly capture the feeling that washed over the table, like the room fell away for a moment and it was just Caduceus and Trent and the bitter truth hanging in a void. The tension in that conversation really comes through in the art.

His reaction makes me think something like this rarely ever occurs , or he knows that their will be consequences, and he does *NOT* want to be there to see it xD
Trent doesn’t seem to be the type of person to take criticism like this well. He’s the type of person who thrives on the fear he induces in others and being the one in control of the room, and this pink haired cow man just swept the rug out from under him, taking away all power and presence he had in that moment. That was probably the first time Trent was ever faced with the truth that while he is a powerful mage, he is utterly powerless if people don’t fear him. Because without the looming air of menace, danger and fear, he is nothing but a magic man with funny words, only more powerful than Caleb in terms of magic they can cast since without fear Trent has no influence on Caleb’s life.

I commentated this on another video, but the best part to me is that, Caduceus probably honestly meant every word of this not as an insult, but, as he says, a gift.
Yep, like he said it's a gift. And as much as it must've seen like an insult, it was a genuine attempt to let him know he's a fool that needs to change his ways. It was probably the only nice thing anyone has ever done to trent in his whole life. Which is funny, because that was probably a very painful moment for Trent's ego. It all comes full circle. Trent said pain makes the man, while the only show of compassion he's ever been shown was perceived as a painful jab. I fucking loved this moment

Please don't overlook how Cad tried to follow up after Trent disappeared by saying "That was so tasty" to the food on his plate. What a beautiful double meaning.

This is part of the reason I absolutely adore Taliesin he's super duper smart and he is so good at using it for great effect.
omg this is so good....first, its so charmingly jittery with the way the frames are set up and yet so moving that its hard to take my eyes off of it. I’ve watched this exactly four times, and each time, I stop and look at something different, like the 10/10 sign or the individual party’s reactions around the table or just the way Caduceus’s lips are animated. This animatic really just sells the entire scene, adding a sense of awkwardness from Astrid and Eodwulf (and while Matt is an amazing DM, I don’t think anyone can duplicate themselves to rp two different npcs) for a while maintaining the barely concealed delight of all the characters. Overall, love this animatic!!!!

The other's faces in the crowd shots were HILARIOUS. Love how when the focus is all on Cad, the other's just have the funniest of expressions. Beau looks so fucking thrilled to be a witness of this monumental dressing down, Fjord has his hype man face one, Jester just looks gobsmacked but impressed, Yasha's either wide-eyed shocked or quietly smiling, Veth is enjoying the chaos, while the Wizard Trio are just in varying levels of distressed.
Love, love, LOVE all these details. I had to watch so many times just to get them!
