    Day 1 of translating Levy speaking russian:
    0:31 'frantsuzskaya zasheetah' is french defense
    24:11 That's just completely fucked up… How can you play Ba5 when protect- …your Queen is protecting the Bishop, and then you're placing your King in front of the Queen like this. How can you play like this? Freak, that's just completely fucked up… What's this move? How! *And why is the king running back and forth?* to the right, to the left, freaking dancing!

      Elo is basically chess power level

    • @pocarski
      @pocarski 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Basically all you need to know about Elo:
      - For every 400 points of difference, the odds of winning become 10 times better in favor of the higher rated player (i. e. 800 vs 400 have odds 10:1, 1700 vs 900 have odds 100:1 and so on)
      - After every game you gain or lose points based on the outcome and the difference in strength, aka losing to a weaker opponent punishes you harder than losing against a stronger one (similar with winning). Your opponent also loses (or gains) the exact same amount as you, so the winner effectively takes some points from the loser.

    Content idea: Can you beat a rating 600, rating 1000 and rating 1400 where at least half of your moves are pre-moves? and which was the hardest opponent?
    Obviously, 1400 is better than 600, but 600 is waaay harder to predict and makes you prone to blunders.

    At 8:50 when you counted the checkmating patterns it made me think of this. Teach checkmating patterns by analyzing positions with multiple checkmates. This way it is much easier to cleanly separate out different patterns and learn them by comparing them to others, all within the same position.

      Okay, first of all, that was a move he recommended before the fact, so your comment doesn’t even make sense.
      Secondly, castling before opening the center is about not letting your opponent attack you. But there is no attack. The black bishops and knight can’t do any damage, and the black queen has relocated to northern Siberia.

    There's some openings that Levy is consistently either for or against beginner/intermediate players playing (Vienna, Sicilian, etc.). But there are a few openings, such as the King's Indian Defense or the Ponziani Opening, where I've seen him be strongly on both sides over the years. He advocates for playing the KID in his book, but rails against it in this episode and a previous one

    Hi Gotham, HAD AN IDEA FOR CONTENT! loving the vids. I started playing chess as a kid and thought i was good until i started playing online, now i'm in my 30's. My younger brother always beats me so i started watching streamers (basically just you and Eric) 6 months ago and i now watch your vids as part of my regular youtube watching. The E4 rating climb is great for someone like me who is trying to gain experience in one specific opening before moving on to another and developing a repertoire. But as i'm playing the Vienna at the moment (after watching your vienna vid) i mostly concentrate on those games in the e4 rating climb. So i had a thought, guess the Elo is awesome so for instructional purposes, what if you did a guess the Elo and/or game analysis of a bunch of subscriber games for each popular opening. If you've already had this idea and its in your courses then thanks for the vids anyway.
    Marley

    • @stevencleere4912
      @stevencleere4912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i know its hard, but remind yourself that losing is the ONLY way to get better at chess. You're going to lose. You're going to lose more than you ever thought possible. over and over. In streaks and in scattered games. And every time, you analyze that game and see what you did wrong. And slowly, steadily, you will stop making those mistakes. And while you lose, you study openings. You study lines. You study an opening that beat you and get yourself a weapon against it. You watch levy vides about stopping early queen attacks and danger levels.
      There is no way forward in chess except through loss. You have to prove yourself wrong in chess, and often its the other player who does it for you.

    What Levy means in Game 3 is that most ppl (below 2000 and especially below 1600) just play KID or Grunfeld or that kind of stuff because when they are low rated they just google for a good opening and then they read the Wiki article and it reads "The Kings Indian is a HYPERMODERN chess defense" and they think "WOAH ey boy I'm a hypermodern guy, I gotta learn this!" and thats why they think its automatically good. And then they play this opening from 1000 rating on up until forever. They learn 8-10 moves of theory by heart which makes them look like 2000s (as Levy suspected in the opening) but as soon as their theory stops they have literally 0 clue what they are doing and every follow-up move is a huge blunder. And they dont understand that this is not how you should learn chess (because you dont learn something if you play 10 perfect moves but then blunder 6 times in a row). You are way better off playing "simple" openings that create similar positions over and over again where there are just some very slight differences and you can now figure out what move to change to adjust to that. And eventually when you really know what you're doing in general with simple openings, then you can approach these modern openings because even when you are out of theory you will have a feeling which piece could belong where and what your strategy in general could be. And then you analyze the games and you might see oh that was a slight inaccuracy, I shouldve played this instead or I should have played these 2 moves in the opposite order because this and that (but you dont blunder 6 times in a row and have absolutely no clue what youre doing like white here).
