  • beardbooze.com - The Origin of Shaving (Where and when did shaving begin?)
Have you ever wondered how shaving started? Somewhere along the line someone decided, “The face is meant to be shaven”. Who? When? Where? WHY!? Well, unfortunately it is impossible to answer these questions with any level of certainty. However, there are some educated speculations on the subject.
There are some that believe shaving started back in the Stone Age, with razors made of flint. We are talking 20,000 - 30,000 B.C. here! Flint dulls very quickly, talk about man’s first disposable razor. Maybe there was a “Dollar Cave Club”. But, I digress.
Archeologists have found evidence of facial hair removal dating back to 100,000 B.C.! It is thought that they used two sea shells to grasp the hair a rip it out. Yikes!
The next theory starts with the great Egyptians back in ancient times. Now, the Egyptians didn’t just have a vendetta against the face fuzz, it was ALL fuzz. They preferred a completely shaven body. Either way, Egyptian men are said to be the originators of the daily shaving routine. Egyptians felt that any facial hair whatsoever was an indication of poor hygiene. So why is King Tutankhamun (King Tut) depicted with a long braided goatee?
Let’s flash forward to about 300 B.C. Yes, Ancient Greece. Alexander the Great is thought to be a significant contributor to shaving. He felt as though a beard put him at a disadvantage in battle because a beard was easy to grab onto. Some will argue that Spartans sported beards and long hair and they are notoriously known for being great warriors.
All of this may or may not be true, but I will leave you with one question. If the Greeks were so against beards, why are so many Greek Gods bearded?

I think a key factor for people who shave. Besides the razor already being invented. During World War I. Military had to be shaven so they can properly have a proper seal for their gas mask due to muster gas. Of course now, military, police, and firefighters have be shaven for the same reason. Even correctional officers. Some people in society tend use to trend from what the military did and it would become a temporary fashion trend. Not as often now days. This is just my opinion. Have a great week.

I haven't (yet) fancied anyone with a beard; but this year, I've developed my first crush on a mustachioed man: Al Swearengen, in Deadwood.
I think my dad suits his beard.

In ancient times it would have been a problem because of the beard harvesting bacteria and other potentially problem-causing organisms, it's not like everyone had access to ample water. That is no longer a problem in the 1st world because we can wash our beards because nearly everyone has constant access to clean running water. I think in modern times the reason people are shaving more and more is because of the rise of feminism. In a lot of subcultures and even in the mainstream culture you will see submissive men, and they also want to be hairless like the women they are with. Of course, not all men that are submissive are hairless, that is just a generalization. Its fun to see now that there are small counter cultures that are promoting beards as I think in the first world that they should be 100% accepted as normal because they are clean and are no longer associated with poor hygiene.
