- Escape Road
The Kodaikanal-Munnar Road (old SH-18) was located in Dindigul District and Theni District of Tamil Nadu and Idukki district of Kerala in South India. It covers 81 kilometers (50 mi) from Kodaikanal to Munnar. The road was improved by the British in 1942 as an evacuation route in preparation for a possible Japanese invasion of South India. With a maximum elevation of 2,480 meters (8,140 ft) just south of Vandaravu Peak, it was among the highest roads in India, south of the Himalayas, prior to its closure in 1990.

I went Munnar to Kodaikanal by my Vauxhall Velox six cylinder car with five people in 1975 took about 5 hours to reach Kodaikanal about 50 miles ( 83kms)through the deep forest road . It was a very adventurous trip then . Return was through Kodai road ,Theni ,Peerimedu,Kottayam , Thrissur.Kodai Road is the junction from where Kodaikanal hill road started. Kodai road is only 23 kms from Dindigul & 42 kms from Madurai . Palani to Kodaikanal road was not opened then. Palani to Kodaikanal road was opened after 1975 and the distance to Kodaikanal shortened by about 60 kms . Palani to Kodaikanal is only 64 kms .

We trekked from Munnar to Kodaikanal in 1976. It took 2.5 days. The total distance was about 80 km. The escape road was abandoned and was not fit to travel except on foot. It was a memorable trip.

In the 80s myself and friends have gone on bikes from Kodai to Munnar on this road with forest department permission. It was in bad condition and there were few humans in sight. The road was non-existent in many places. Luckily we got through without damaging our bikes. Since there were no smartphones or digital cameras in those days we have no record of our trip. It is a big regret.

Was lucky to travel from Munnar to Kodaikanal on the Escape road in 1995, with four friends, in a 2WD MM540. It was 84 kms to Kodai from Munnar town if I remember correctly. 40 kms to Top Station and a further 44 kms to Kodai through the Escape Road.

We've done actual escape route by bike to Kodai from Munnar like 30 plus years ago. Back in those days no rules were ever that strict😂 and whatever could be bend by a bottle of alcohol or hard cash. Kodai road is on the plains where there's a railway station by the name and it is the closest railway station to get to kodai. It's strategically located with easy access to Palani, Dindigul, Madurai and Theni road coming from Kumali in Kerala.

Yes true this is the official escape road ,i have explored in 1996 from kodaikanal we were 10 people with 5 bikes .currently trekking only allowed a round trip of 4.5 km with insured by the forest dept .charge Rs 300 per person
Recently they have started a offroad safari with polaris charging of Rs 1000 for a trails till a watch tower

Kodaikanal Railway Station was called Kodai Road. It is near a place called Ammainaickanur. The line is between Madurai and Dindigul.

Hello bro, Kodai road is located 79.5 kms far away by road from Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal road railway station is also located near and we do have our daily train (Chennai Egmore > Guruvayoor > Chennai Egmore) touching this station and has a 1 minute stop as well.
