Today is October 21, 2021. I have been a CNA for 15 years. It was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. It is truly an honor to take care of people who aren’t able to do for themselves. I had two of the best teachers. They pushed us hard and I’m grateful to them for doing it. Congratulations to all who have taken their state boards and passed. Good luck to anyone who is waiting to take their state boards. God bless all CNA’s♥️
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m studying right now to be a CNA after years of work as a medical assistant. Already, it’s waaaaaay more rewarding ❤️
I just wanna say hand a s nail care was on of my skills for my state exam along with ambhlation and feeding a patient and I passed with flying colors. My classmates and I watched your videos and practiced with them in our classroom. I passed my cna exam on 4/25/2023 and got my chronic 4/28/2023. I currently been at my job for 1 month. Thank you for these videos, they are a life saver ❤️
Congratulations! That's wondeful. We are super proud of you! Tune in to our Live Q&A Session on Thursday at 3pm (ET) for your congratulations shoutout! :-)
I’m sitting in the lobby, waiting to begin my test in 10 min and I’m terrified! But if you’re looking for a good way to study, what I did was a.) watch these videos for review and then b.) I typed all 22 skills into a generator online. I would hit generate and it would give me a skill. I opened Google docs and typed exactly what I would do and say during this skill, trying to see as much as I could remember from memory. Hopefully this is a useful study technique for others!
I want to say thank you to Miss Patty. Today I just passed my skills exam. I had 100 for the perineal care, 96 for partial bed bath, and 100 for dentures care. I am really grateful to have this opportunity to watch those videos. Thank you very much again.

Hi, thanks for a great video. Just wondering if the basin should be sprayed with disinfectant spray as you did in your previous videos, and in your student instruction book. Was that step dropped?
Disinfecting the basin is not required for the exam any longer(which is why the new videos and new skills book does not indicate this step any longer). In a clinical setting, if disinfection is required (i.e., disinfecting spray), it would be done after rinsing but before drying. And you would not want to be touching it with dirty gloves while spraying it, so setting it down in the sink is when you would disinfect. Then pick it up with a paper towel to prevent cross-contamination with your dirty gloves. For the exam, once you rinse, your gloves are wet, so using a paper towel between wet gloves while drying basin helps speed up the process. Never put anything back wet, as this provides an area for bacterial growth. The bottom of the basin is not used for direct patient care, so having the bottom of the basin touch the sink is fine. It is the inside of the basin that we are concerned with. Hope this helps!
In a clinical setting, patients must pay for every single supply, either personally or through insurance copays. Even basins cost money! So, using 2 basins can be expensive and is not necessary as long as you don't put soap in the basin. Think about your own bathing habits...if you take a bath, you probably don't use 2 bathtubs, one to wash and one to rinse. As long as you did not add anything to the water (bubble bath, soap, bath salts, etc), that water can be used for rinsing. It's the same thing here. Soap is not added to the water in the basin, but put on the washcloth instead so that the water remains clean for rinsing. Now, if the water is obviously dirty or soiled, you should empty the basin and get new water. If the patient is on contact precautions or has an infectious disease, the care plan may be adjusted to accommodate that particular patient's needs. But this is not the case during the test and you will only have one basin to work with, so you can soak and rinse in one basin. Thank you!
Please explain what Charting: means in the right bottom corner, when supplies shown. I'm not sure what personal skin means either, thank you in advance
Congratulations! That is so awesome! We are very proud of you and wish you great success in your new career! :-) Are there other topics you would like to see us cover as you begin your career? (Don't forget to like and subscribe!)
You will continue to physically wash your hands until told to simulate from the evaluators. In most cases, this will be immediately before beginning the second skill. But wash your hands until you are TOLD to simulate - very important! Best of luck!
Woud we fail if we did it this way if the way they trained us was just a bit different (for instance, our class says to use a towel for the table, one washcloth instead of two) I know this way is correct, just want to make sure since these videos are helping me A LOT
Hello, thank you very much for these videos. When you say, 'Gloves are not required for the exam because there is no exposure to personal skin' what exactly do you mean? The CNA is touching the hand of the patient! So is that not considered 'personal skin'? Many thanks.
Personal skin is any skin normally covered by a bathing suit (breast area and genitals). Hands are not personal skin. As long as the patient does not have any skin openings (wounds, sores, rash, incision, etc.) there is no danger to the healthcare worker who washes her hands before beginning the skill and after ending the skill. Touching skin is not dangerous. Touching body fluids and skin openings (which allow body fluids out) could potentially be dangerous, therefore gloves would be required. Hope this helps!
Yes. Remember that everything you touch with gloves on will contaminate the gloves...please see our video on Glove Rules th-cam.com/video/AQa9RYK1BI4/w-d-xo.html. But a general principle is that you NEVER touch the drawer with soiled gloves or hands....this keeps the drawer clean for others to access. This is why we use paper towels between our soiled hands/gloves to open the drawer at the end of the skill. You can always use a paper towel as a barrier to gather your supplies, too, if unsure (but it's not required) If you found this presentation helpful, please don't forget to like and subscribe!
Gloves are optional for this skill. As long as the patient (and you) don't have any skin openings, gloves aren't required. You can wear them if you wish, but they are not required. Thank you!
4yourCNA I wish you guys would tell that to my RNs :) lol!!! :) I watched your video (love it) before getting checked off on nail care and my nurses counted me off for choosing not to wear gloves. (There was nothing in patient's care plan that suggested I needed gloves) But the nurses wanted to see gloves no matter what :(
Actually, this is a graded checkpoint. On Prometric Clinical skills checklist, item #10 states, "Apply lotion to cleaned hand after nail care finished" so you must finish nail care before applying lotion. Hope this helps! Join us for our Live Q&A session here on our TH-cam channel Thursdays (today!) at 3pm Eastern. Hope to see you there!
Been a CNA for 10 years now and I hate to say it, but to all you new CNA's out there, you probably won't have time to do all of this. Sure, you'll do nail care, oral care, give showers, and all that stuff, but you won't be doing them the way the state wants you too lol. My advice is to know the way the state wants things done so that way you know how to do these skills when the state comes, otherwise, learn the safest and most efficient shortcuts. You obviously don't want to learn ways that would harm or neglect the residents, but when you have 16 residents, three showers, vitals and ton of other things to do, you need to learn all the tricks of the trade in order to get the job done.
No (but great catch!), the test does not require you to disinfect anything anymore. So, simply rinse, dry and store all patient use items as in the newest videos! Great job!
For the exam, you will use whatever receptacle the evaluator shows you to use for dirty linens. It may be a laundry basket, hamper, can or bag. Each facility will be set up in a similar fashion, but may have slightly different equipment. The evaluator will give you a little orientation before you begin the exam and point out where all the supplies are located and where to put soiled linens. Hope this helps! Best of luck!
Maybe Cause your only washing one hand but I was taught after you applied soap to the hand not to place it back in the water because it will make the rest of the water soapy when you need clean water to rinse off but besides that your videos seems really good I’m using them to study for my exam lol
Basins are "No Soap Zones", meaning that you cannot apply soap to the water. You can, however, use that water for rinsing. You can use two basins if you want, but in most cases there will only be one basin in the testing facility. This is because patients are only issued one basin when they are admitted and getting another one will cost the patient money (they are charged for all supplies). Since you can easily do this with one basin by not putting soap in the water, this saves money, resources and time. This is reflected in Prometric's checklist, under checkpoint 5: "...rinse or remove soap using a clean, soap-free, wet washcloth or using basin water if not soapy". Hope this helps! Best of luck!
No, military time is not required for the state exam - but if you use regular time, you MUST remember to put a.m. or p.m. next to the time. Good luck on the test!
Hello, my state requires me to "Gently push cuticle back with a towel or washcloth." I can't find any examples of what that looks like, can anyone help?
How did it go? I am getting ready to test. I just finished my class today and got my fingerprints done last Monday. I just found this site, and I am so happy...
This just a question. Aren’t you introducing soap back into the basin when you are rinsing the hand? Prometric states that you should rinse or remove soap with a clean, soap-free wet washcloth. Shouldn’t you rinse the hand over an empty space on the chux with a wet washcloth?
Putting the hand back in the basin during rinsing is acceptable. The rest of that checkpoint reads, "or using basin water if not soapy." You did not put soap into the water, so it may be used for rinsing. You will not be using the water after rinsing, so any soap that transfers to the water is not an issue. Hope this helps!
4yourCNA screaming thank youuuuuuu all the way from Delaware I passed just took them today thank you so much I was in there tell everybody who didn't passed to watch your videos
Congratulations! That is so awesome! Thank you SOOO MUCH for referring others to us! I am so happy for you and wish you the best of luck in your career! :-)
So. question, when you turned the faucet on, you didn't grab a paper towel, is this unnecessary due to the fact that you did not have to wear gloves, or was it just for video purposes and i should still use a paper towel when touching the faucet?
The faucet is always considered contaminated, you touch it with dirty hands all the time (after using the bathroom, after performing care, with soiled gloves). Since the faucet is always considered dirty, it is okay to touch it with dirty hands and gloves. But you can NEVER touch the faucet with clean hands. You would have to use a paper towel if your hands are clean (such as getting the water which is demonstrated in this video) but you don't have to use a paper towel at the end of the skill when cleaning your basin (as demonstrated in the video). Our website has more information on glove use 4YourCNA.com. Thank you!
Congratulations!!! We are very proud of you (we LOVE success stories!) and we wish you the very best of luck in your new career! Don't forget to tell others about us! :-)

Hello! I am a challenger. I have been working in the medical field (hospital setting) for over 15 years. I am getting certified due to me moving to another state that requires a CNA to work in their hospital setting. I have been watching your videos and studying your material and I want to say they have helped me ALOT. I am not the best test taker when all eyes are on me. Do you have any advice for me as far as the skills part goes? I did the written practice exam on the Prometric's webpage and passed the 100 questions with flying colors. I am nervous about the practical part of the exam. What if on one of the skills I miss one of the supplies and do it the way I've learned in the past? What are they mainly looking at other than hand hygiene, privacy of the patient, rights during their care ect? Thank you so much for all you do!
Our best advice is to follow your care plan. If you need to make a correction be sure to verbalize it. We have a fantastic eBook! Get it for free at 4yourcna.com/ebook! This interactive ebook will help you understand the topics covered on the written exam, what the question is REALLY asking, and how to identify the correct answer! Since you have not washed your hands, they are not considered clean. You don't want to touch the outside of the drawer with a dirty hand (or, in this case, glove) because that drawer will be touched by clean hands later for other skills. The drawer front should never be touched with dirty hands/gloves - this is an infection control principle. It helps keep the patient's environment clean! Hope this helps!
No, there is no reason to dispose of these items into a sharps container. Sharps containers are only for disposing of "sharp" items (items that can be used for invasive procedures such as needles, lancets, scalpels, etc.). Since CNAs do not handle these items, there will be no sharps containers during the skills exam. Personal care items (such as orange sticks and emery boards) will be disposed of in the trash. You are never allowed to dispose of non-sharp items into a sharps container (because they must be processed in a completely different manner by a waste management company - sharps and non-sharps should never be mixed). In the event that the orange stick or emery board has come into contact with infectious materials (contaminated blood), you would be instructed to dispose of this item in a biohazard bag, not a sharps container (but in reality, this should never happen because the nurse should be performing this care, not the CNA). I know this answer is probably a little more technical that you wanted, but I hope it helps! Good Luck!
i take my exam tomorrow! ive been watching your videos for about a week and pray that God will see me through this milestone.
We wish you the best of luck on your exam! Let us know how you do - we will send good vibes your way and would LOVE to congratulate you when you pass.

It is the inside of the basin that we are concerned with. Hope this helps!
While soaking the patient's hand in the basin shouldn't you use a separate basin for rinsing and washing of the hand for infection control
Thank you!
@@4yourcna you explained that perfectly I'm shocked
Did you throw away the emery board and orange wood stick after use ?
Please explain what Charting: means in the right bottom corner, when supplies shown. I'm not sure what personal skin means either, thank you in advance
Just passed exam...thank u for the videos :D
Congratulations! That is so awesome! We are very proud of you and wish you great success in your new career! :-) Are there other topics you would like to see us cover as you begin your career? (Don't forget to like and subscribe!)

Glad to help

After the hand washing skill,do you have to do the same style of hand washing or do you verbalized the hand washing part?
Nicole McDaniel Lawrence verbalize after first full skill
You will continue to physically wash your hands until told to simulate from the evaluators. In most cases, this will be immediately before beginning the second skill. But wash your hands until you are TOLD to simulate - very important! Best of luck!

Thank you so much
Woud we fail if we did it this way if the way they trained us was just a bit different (for instance, our class says to use a towel for the table, one washcloth instead of two) I know this way is correct, just want to make sure since these videos are helping me A LOT
Question: is it ok to don’t give the call light to patient hand and just leave it on bed? Shall not we put the basin in dirty designated area?
Hello, after washing our hands, are we allowed to open the drawer without any gloves or without using any paper towels? Thank you.
Are you supposed to put gloves on while providing hand and nail care, especially when using the orange stick because of infection control?
Gloves are optional for this skill. As long as the patient (and you) don't have any skin openings, gloves aren't required. You can wear them if you wish, but they are not required. Thank you!
4yourCNA I wish you guys would tell that to my RNs :) lol!!! :) I watched your video (love it) before getting checked off on nail care and my nurses counted me off for choosing not to wear gloves. (There was nothing in patient's care plan that suggested I needed gloves) But the nurses wanted to see gloves no matter what :(
Sorry to hear that! Not all nurse evaluators follow the rules of testing...so sorry!

@ 4yourCNA .... Can i apply lotion after hand care instead of after nail care? It seems like the best thing to do.
Hope to see you there!
i take my skills test soon and for this skill i was wondering do we use gloves for this one ?
Thank you for sharing this video
in the test do we only do one hand?
and for the foot care we only do one foot?
Thank you but I have question we say gloves not necessary if patient have skin disease what happen to you
Been a CNA for 10 years now and I hate to say it, but to all you new CNA's out there, you probably won't have time to do all of this.
I took my exam today. I am just curious is it an automatic fail if you don't check for jagged edges?
Do you need to sanitized the basin after you rinse it out as in previous videos?
No (but great catch!), the test does not require you to disinfect anything anymore. So, simply rinse, dry and store all patient use items as in the newest videos! Great job!
on the state test do we have to use a bag to put the towels in ?
For the exam, you will use whatever receptacle the evaluator shows you to use for dirty linens. It may be a laundry basket, hamper, can or bag. Each facility will be set up in a similar fashion, but may have slightly different equipment. The evaluator will give you a little orientation before you begin the exam and point out where all the supplies are located and where to put soiled linens. Hope this helps! Best of luck!
4yourCNA thanks for the videos I have pass my cna skills
Congratulations and best of luck in your new career!
+Taranicka Cummings Congratulations! We are very proud of you and wish you great success in your career!
Is this training skills same in Nevada?
I see it's very helpful but I'm not sure if this training skills same in Nevada.
PLEASE CAN YOU GET BACK TO ME MY TEST TOMORROW ON THE URINARY DRAINAGE DO I HAVE TO PUT MILITARY TIME WHEN I DOCUMENT MY SKILL?
No, military time is not required for the state exam - but if you use regular time, you MUST remember to put a.m. or p.m. next to the time. Good luck on the test!
Thank u
Hello, my state requires me to "Gently push cuticle back with a towel or washcloth." I can't find any examples of what that looks like, can anyone help?
I was taught to check Id and take away their call light is that not okay?
I test July 1st 🤞🏽🤞🏽
How did it go? I am getting ready to test. I just finished my class today and got my fingerprints done last Monday. I just found this site, and I am so happy...
Barrett Tribe oh okay cool It didn’t go so well I passed my written & failed my clinicals 😔but I take my clinicals over August the 2nd
Is it required to do both hands or just pretend I do the second hand?
For California at least, it says to just verbalize that you would do the same thing to the other hand.
4yourCNA Thank you!
Are these videos the same as Delaware rules in guide lines for Prometrics
Yes, these videos are based on the testing care plans for all Prometric states. Best of luck! :-)
4yourCNA thank you I will definitely let you know how I do thank you for ur video so much
We look forward to hearing from you when you pass! :-)
How long should the hand soak? If at all?
You are not required to soak the hand, as the care plan does not indicate a need to soak for any specified amount of time. Thank you for your comment!
Tiffany Michaelina Hi Tiffany, I'm also in the NY area. What skills you had to do? I'll be doing my exam Friday.
So. question, when you turned the faucet on, you didn't grab a paper towel, is this unnecessary due to the fact that you did not have to wear gloves, or was it just for video purposes and i should still use a paper towel when touching the faucet?
The faucet is always considered contaminated, you touch it with dirty hands all the time (after using the bathroom, after performing care, with soiled gloves). Since the faucet is always considered dirty, it is okay to touch it with dirty hands and gloves. But you can NEVER touch the faucet with clean hands. You would have to use a paper towel if your hands are clean (such as getting the water which is demonstrated in this video) but you don't have to use a paper towel at the end of the skill when cleaning your basin (as demonstrated in the video). Our website has more information on glove use 4YourCNA.com. Thank you!
I take my test April 21, wish me luck
We wish you the very best luck on your exam! If you are finding these videos helpful, please like and subscribe! :-) Let us know how you do!
4yourCNA I PASSED, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR AMAZING VIDEO'S MRS.RAMSEY
Congratulations!!! We are very proud of you (we LOVE success stories!) and we wish you the very best of luck in your new career! Don't forget to tell others about us! :-)
so we don't have to use gloves for this skill or its optional? peoples nails kinda grosses me out
I take my exam October 9th 2018 in this skill and foot care are we required to let the foot and hand soak for 2-3 minutes ?
You don't have to soak for any specific period of time for the exam. The goal is to soften any debris and make cleaning easier. This, plus much more is covered in our FREE online CNA test prep program on courses.4YourCNA.com. We hope you were successful in your state exam and wish you luck in your new career!
I have exam tomorrow. Wish me luck
I passed both tests thank you Miss Patty for your lessons!

Where do you dispose of orange stick? Trash or sharps?
Since the orange stick did not penetrate INTO a patient, it does not belong in the sharps disposal. It will be disposed of in the trash. You may find our FREE online CNA Test Prep course helpful. It is located at courses.4YourCNA.com and it's free! :-)
Do I have to use a barrier to open the drawer to return supplies at the end of skill?
Since you have not washed your hands, they are not considered clean. You don't want to touch the outside of the drawer with a dirty hand (or, in this case, glove) because that drawer will be touched by clean hands later for other skills. The drawer front should never be touched with dirty hands/gloves - this is an infection control principle. It helps keep the patient's environment clean! Hope this helps!
this is amazing
Join us on Thursdays at 3pm eastern for our Weekly livestream Q&A session and mini-lessons with Miss Patti!
im planning to enroll cna nextyr
Best of luck!
Thank U
I have my cna prometrics test on Thursday, can anyone offer me words of encouragement or words of advice...please and thank you!
Hey Miss? Patty, shouldn't I dispose the nail orange stick and file in a sharps container?
Good Luck!
