  • Up until the 1970s, Sailors would sometimes assume the role of the infantry during beach landings, known as a "landing party." Occasionally, these Sailors would also provide land-based artillery support. These roles performed by Sailor were an integral part of the Navy’s operations and mission.
In this video, Tom Frezza, Director of Education at the National Museum of the United States Navy, discusses landing parties and their role in the U.S. Navy with members of USS Olympia's living history crew

The U. S. Navy Landing Force Manual was in force into the 1980s. Watch Quarter and Station bills listed landing force duty into the 1960s.

Is the U.S-Mexican battles considered part of WW1? Like a sort of theater?

No, that was during 1914, before the US even joined the war. I think the put WWI because it was simply the era it took place in.

If these came back wouldn't it eliminate the need for the marine corps?

No because like he said the point of these guys is just hold out until help arrives, or deal with riots, so if you are docked and are attacked in a foreign port, or if people are protesting and become violent. US Marines are only on certain US vessels like the one I was on an LHD. They are on other Amphib ships but things like Destroyers, Aircraft Carriers, Cruisers, Frigates and etc don't have a Marine element on them a CVN may have a marine Hornet squadron but it won't have infantry .
