Bank Fishing For Catfish: Using Balloons For Long Distance Casting

  • While I was in Dallas, TX, Sergio Posadas The Catfish King was kind enough to show me how he gets his bait out to distances of up to 300 yards!
TIP: If you like this idea, but are worried about polluting the water with the balloons, try using a two rod system. Rig the first rod as shown in the video and tie the line from the second rod directly to the balloons. Once the thread is broken, you can reel in the balloons and dispose of them or reuse them. This will help keep the environment clean :)

In Oklahoma City Oklahoma we use that same rig but instead of popping that balloon we use that balloon as a bobber and let the wind take it out. Depending on the Oklahoma wind we’d use anywhere from 1oz weight to I’ve seen guys using 7oz weights to keep the balloon from flopping around. We try our best to keep the balloon on our line but sometimes if we decide to do that rig we pop the balloon instead of letting it go. As long as it doesn’t come off the line we good on balloons.

I lived in Edmond for 15 years but moved to the DFW area 3 years ago. I exclusively ballooned for catfish at Arcadia and Lake Hefner. Caught blues at Arcadia all night long and Flatheads at Hefner. If you float a balloon when they open up the spillway at Hefner, you'll catch flatheads right at the spillway. Throw it in and let the spillway current take the balloon out about a 100 yards or so then stop. That balloon will sit right off the current where those flats are sitting. I used live bluegills about 5 to 6 feet below the balloon on a carolina rid set up ( using about a 2 once weight). That bluegill would swim around freely but the weight would keep it from coming up to the surface and keep the bluegill from swimming off that spot. It would attempt to swim but doesn't move too far since it's fighting the weight and the balloon. At Arcadia, I let the wind float it until my line runs out and those blues would tear it up. Different rig setup at arcadia for the blues. I used a 3 vertical suspended shad balloon rig that an old man showed me at Arcadia. That dude was about 70 years old and was the best cat fisherman I've ever met. He taught me how to balloon at Arcadia. He's a legend. Basically it's 3 large dead shads about 6 inches apart vertically going down your line 6 feet under your balloon (top shad, middle shad, bottom shad). Double hook each shad in the upper back. One up front and one in the back to suspend it like it's horizontal. Do that for each shad. The end result are 3 shads one on top of each other (6 inches apart). When the wind carries the balloon out, those 3 shads look alive and swimming in a school. Those blues tear it up. Many times catching 2 at the same time. Just float it out there 2 or 3 hundred yards and real it back in. No need to sit and wait for an hour. Float it as far as you can then reel it back in. When a fish hits, it hooks itself due to the balloon. The balloon creates the resistant for the fish to hook itself. Typically you won't know you have one on your line at night when you let it out since your line is waterlogged and out there so far (unless it's a big one which will pop your balloon). But as you start to reel it in, you'll feel the weight. There's nothing more exciting to see your balloon in the daytime going against the wind and sideways!

Ronin Z heck yeah man! Last night I was fishing at the spillway and caught a small channel but somebody also told me about using bass minnows and bluegill whenever the water is running. I don’t fish Arcadia too much, when I do it’s mainly for crappie but I’ll try ballooning it one day! I mainly balloon fish Overholser because there’s usually less people than Hefner so there’s less chance a boat would cut my braid. I’ve been really wanting to get some live shad and throw it on a hook under a balloon and see what happens, but lately I’ve seen some big blues and flatties caught ballooning overholser. The locals are usually the best people to learn from, there’s two separate older gentlemen that have their own fishing rigged vehicles, one even has a van with rod holders on the pushbar (front part of van that protects radiator and front part of the van) . I learned a lot from them, using braid mainline instead of mono can allow you to get a lot farther, using mono leader with 2 or 3 hooks spaced apart can help guarantee at least a fish most times, and certain spots of the lake that people usually balloon fish and catch some bigguns. My biggest balloon fish so far is a 12lb flathead, but it’s bound to get bigger.
Very cool to see a fellow Okie on TH-cam, 🤣. I hope wherever you’re at you’re catching a ton of fish. Thank you a lot for the information here, I’ll definitely try ballooning the Hefner spillway one day!! Thanks again, and tight lines!

@@GPTInDaHouse Man I miss fishing there. I just told my fishing buddy up there that I'm lonely fishing down here 🤣 (I haven't found someone to fish with yet here in Arlington).
I'm only fishing for cats at the trinity river so no lake fishing for me because the local 2 lakes here doesnt have flats or blues (at least that's what I've been told and I haven't caught any). Caught some decent ones at the river though in the last couple of weeks. A 19lb flathead and a few smaller blues.
A dude the other day caught a 30lb flat who was about 10 yards from me so I know they're in there.
I recently got the "fishing angler" mobile app to see where people are fishing and what they're catching. If you ever get that app, my username is Ronin R. I'll post pics of my catches (if I catch any lol). I posted a few pics on there the other day of a pretty big bass that ate my live bluegill. Dude was hungry😁.
Happy fishing my friend. I'll be back up there to fish one day.

There is a guy that shows this technique with a tension release that is used on planer boards. Lets the weight drop with a jerk of the line. Keeps the balloons and makes it much easier to reel in a fish as the line slides through the balloon release/retainer. You can reel back towards your boat and drop the weight and bait several times like reverse bouncing . Haven't tried it yet but makes sense.

O and one more idea. You can tie a line to your chair and balloons. That way if you no we're there's a hole deep out there have a line just the size you need when it gets there pull break the line drops in the deep hole. Or on the reel get sharpy blacken the line so when it gets to the mark break loose and pull in your bait drops in the hole. Have fun.

Shark fishermen used to do this off piers in Florida, using garbage bags filled with air to float huge baits hundreds of yards offshore. I saw one when I was a kid (over 30 years ago) attach the garbage bag balloon to the main line using a lifesaver (candy). The lifesaver would eventually dissolve, releasing the balloon.

Now I think that's good idea. I used to use 1 litters mountain dew because looked like big bobber. I left them on. But. Balloons good idea but bad idea casue trashing the water. Let him no he needs to use two rods. Have one in a rod holder tie a line to the balloons. When it gets way out there close the bail on the reels. Pick up the second rod and jerk it reel in the ballons then you have for the next round. Saves money and the life of a turtle bird or fish. But I no your getting alot of hate. But let him no I love this idea I've used ballons years ago. But never thought about thread and breaking loose. Being I used bottles but yea need that second rod to real them back in. Thanks for sharing now I might try that or a short noodle but ballons wind will help more. Have a good weekend bro. Always love to watch and learn just been rely sick I haven't made a vidoe in months. Hope to again soon. God bless

I have a similar system but use a beach ball and I use plastic bats as bobbers. I tie drop lines on the handles of the bats ad when the bats stand up you got a bite. This way you can have multiple bats along the main line.

Love the idea guys. really like the last tidbit of the two rod idea. I'm always filling a kitchen bag full of trash from inconsiderate fisherman... worm and liver cups, line, rubber gloves and biodegradable balloon pieces, beer and cola cans. Guess the Eagle Scout never leaves but its sad when I walk 50 feet or less to a trash can. Just want to teach younger anglers by doing. One angler makes a difference. Tight lines to all Jamie

I know that a lot of you guys won't belive this but I thought about the same exact idea EXCEPT I was not sure of how would get rid of the balloons. I still think that I might be able to come up with another idea and if I do I would share it. I mean when you fish a lot and have a lot of time on your hands and can't get far where you want sometimes? then a lot of crazy ideas come through your mind lol and that's pretty awesome to know that someone else thought about the same thing. Now I wish I would've had put it on TH-cam but oh well you guys beat me to it lol. Have a blessed one y'all!

J yes the ones they were using were not and do you know how long it takes for a biodegradable balloon to biodegrade. Do some research they really don't ever go away. Don't be lazy and pollute use a two rod system if your going to do this.

this is cool but their is a much faster way to do the same thing we use a very small boat powered by a trolling and anther pole attached to the boat the trolling motor is set a little off and a bar running to one side so you can make it go straight. am sure this sound very confusing I need to get some pictures of the one we use to better explain. but we use them for down at the damn they work out great.

The problem I have here is the pollution. You said nothing about biodegradable balloons. It's pretty irresponsible for someone to promote a technique like this yet you we're adimant in your wd40 video about how it was bad for the environment. Fish will eat deflated balloons and it can kill them because it gets stuck in their bowels. So consider using a smaller rod and attach a line to them so you can retrieve them.
