Ehhhhh. All the breaking bad episodes are kinda directed the same imo. I think the writing is what shines the most in that show. I don’t think there are many episodes that highlight a specific directing style. It’s all shot similarly
"Fly" is also very underrated. Obviously it was doomed to be least liked episode since it had the lowest budget. But the directing of it accurately showed the psychological journey Walter and Jessi went through. It really conveyed them becoming mad when they were catching that fly. It's also one hella of a job for the directer to keep the viewer engaged when the script is so limited to one space. Thought he did he great job there.
It’s kind of funny watching The Last Jedi somewhat like it’s a Breaking Bad episode. The two are actually more similar than you might think. But it really was a weird fit for Star Wars.
Parasite has a demonstrably better critic and audience score on RT, IMDb and Metacritic, and won more awards, and made more profit (based on budget), but OK.

Looper is one of the cleanest Sci-fis I've ever seen. Knives Out is the most clean whodunnit. This man is an absolute genius when it comes to screenwriting! Can't wait to see what he comes up with next!
Looper makes no sense and knives out is the most obvious whodunit ever when Chris Evans is the only character out of the suspects to share more than 1 scene with ana da armas. Not to mention the "SJW degree" line is a massive red flag for the character.
I thought it was awful. The dialogue in it is the most low-IQ easy to write trash I’ve seen in a movie, there’s no talent on display there, or understanding of taste, no unique voice. Just people acting like they’re above everything. A 10 year old could have written it, trying to write characters that are cool.

I just cannot ever get behind someone who has a preference of half an audience hating a movie rather than an entire audience liking one. (His quote in summary) There is no logical motive for that. TLJ imo was simply odd shock value, tongue in cheek parody, and took one of cinema's most iconic heroes (Luke Skywalker) and dumped garbage all over him. The story just wasn't it and that's regardless of fan service which I am not necessarily a fan of either.

They claimed the fans pushed Ahmed Best to the brink, even though he cites **the media** as the problem. Th biggest problem LF created for itself was making a nostalgia bait trilogy and then attacking fans for not liking it, rather than just keeping quiet. Feige is a lesson in how to shut the f up when your movies get backlash. Perhaps this is why Johnson has to run away to Netflix and Peacock with Craig in tow, no studio wants to go anywhere near him?
I will always admire Rian Johnson for having the guts to actually try to make something different about Star Wars, regardless of the amount of people that desperately want to hear a story already being told

The best part about the movie is that it's NOT a whodunnit. It starts as one, turns into a howcatchem, and then turns BACK into a whodunnit at the very end. Part of the reason why Glass Onion was much weaker, it is a bog-standard mystery whodunnit

@@TheSilverScreenAcademy Mark Hamill did his best performance ever in The Last Jedi. This is also a show of great directing. Why does it matter that Hamill didn't agree with the writing during the filming? He isn't the writer, nor did he have a fully view on what the story was going to be about. I love Hamill with all my heart, but I don't care if he didn't agree with where Luke's mindset was in the beginning of TLJ. Mark Hamill seemingly has also soften his critic against the movie. If you watch newer interviews of him, he has said TLJ is a "very underrated movie" and "after I've seen the movie, I was wrong." He also made a tweet about it. The point is, don't try make seem Hamill seem to be an 'opponent' to certain groups in the fan base. He loves all the fans and respects their opinions.

He’s one of my favourite up and coming directors, has been since I watched Knives Out (I had seen The Last Jedi prior, but I had no concept of who wrote or directed it). I also really liked Looper and The Last Jedi has come out as one of my favourite Star Wars films. I’ll admit, he does kind of get up his own rear end a bit with how clever he tries to be, but I’d much rather that and a Director whose personal style I can understand and enjoy over another factory produced MCU movie where the director has as much creative input as the gaffer.

My favorite thing about Rian is how positively he'll talk about everyone he works with. It's a good acknowledgment of how much of a team effort making a movie or TV show is!
It's a little wild to hear Brothers Bloom is considered a flop. I had the poster for it and I have it on DVD and everyone I have showed it to has loved it. It's a favorite! And Nathan Johnson's score is great!
Episode VIII was a thread I really wish Disney had leaned into more. Had Rian been given the chance at his own trilogy for VII to IX, I think we would have had a much more cohesive story.
i would love a redo of the sequel trilogy, but i think they should at least redo episode 9 with a more cleaned up version of the duel of the fates script.
I love his statements about The Last Jedi. The relationship young people have with their heroes is such a Star Wars idea. TLJ was a great exploration of that idea and it is a beautiful film. Director Panos Cosmatos has rightly pointed out that there is a "Tyranny of Perfection" in the film industry. If a film isn't scientifically perfect on every level, toxic fans are so quick to call it a failure and bully the filmmakers who made it, with studio heads only listening to the most toxic critics. I would much rather have a filmmaker make an earnest piece of art that tries to say something rather than a cynical, polished checklist of fan expectations. Good on you, Rian. Will always be a fan.

While I’m not happy with The Last Jedi, I don’t entirely blame him for it. He’s the type of director that needs a whole new story, not to be confined in a story sandbox that’s been around for decades. He should not have been sandwiched into an active story that was already being told, that’s bad on Lucasfilm.
To be fair, even as someone who loves that film, I can admit it would likely have been better for the series as whole if he’d just been given his own thing, like if he’d been asked to do Rogue One for instance
I disagree. I think he tried doing his own thing with last Jedi whereas with ozymandias he stayed close to the formula set before him by Vince Gilligan and the other BB directors.
TLJ was great. I'm so glad they didn't try to copy Empire Strikes Back. Those who hated what Rian did simply wanted the copy, which is not how you make a good sequel.

I don't think the humor was what Star Wars fans took issue with, it was more like - everything else. Regardless, Rian Johnson is a remarkable writer and director, not every film has to knock it out of the park, I'm still looking forward to whatever he does next.
The fact that a video about Rian's 'most iconic films' includes all 6 movies he has directed I think says a lot about his amazing career. Love this man.
I agree but also directors tend to have a shorter filmography compared to actors because they have to spend a lot more time with each movie. Also Rian’s still young as a director so hopefully he’s got many more to go and one day they’ll have to make a part 2 :)

George Lucas used the archetypes as expressed by Joseph Campbell. You should look for the Hours and Hours of videos with Joseph Campbell and George Lucas. The Greek tragedy and hero archetypes was always balanced by comedy archetypes. It's on record that the first Star Wars movie is a crappy crappy script - the actors hamming it up - Carrie using coke to get through it. Lucas in the meantime was inventing special effects that were inspired by dogfights in WWII films. I saw the first film in an empty huge cinema in Melbourne, Australia instead of doing an uni exam. When the finale flying sequences I knew I was watching it the start of the new decade of film. But his script? It was B Grade, something Lucas's admitted. The Campbell hero fi ally hits in the "you are my son" cliffhanger. Rian is right, you ate also right.
I may be one of the few but the Last Jedi was my favorite of the sequels, it had an interesting direction and I think if they had let him do the 3rd it would have been awesome. I'd love to see him do more Star Wars.
I feel like you can like his direction, but still acknowledge that he sort of just threw out everything that was set up in the 1st movie of a 3 movie trilogy.
@@Xfacta12482 no I definitely see that. I guess the reason it doesn't really bother me very much is because I really hated the Force Awakens and thought that it was a very lazy direction. I think they're being many Force users out there is a lot more interesting than there being only a couple. I wouldn't say it was great but compared to the one before and after I definitely preferred it.

The humor was funny in rotj because it felt natural. It’s something Han Solo would do. All the jokes and humor in the sequels felt forced 90% of the time
Outside of his attempt at making a Star Wars movie he has made some quality films. Knives out and Looper were 2 very surprisingly good movies. His direction on Breaking Bad deserves some props as well.
Rian has an undoubtedly unique approach as a director, which is really refreshing in an age of similarly structured cinema. His processes are really interesting to listen to. A true genius of cinema.

Rian Johnson has such a great mind for making original movies, but hearing him talk about Star Wars infuriates me cause he doesnt seem to know what he's talking about. He clearly focused too much on portraying his personal idea of what Star Wars is over just continuing the Star Wars story where it was heading. Say what you want about Lucas changing his mind multiple times, but at least he tried to make the first 6 films coherent and tell a singular story.
Seriously. He didn't want to copy the original trilogy and sell toys. He wanted to make a new story with the characters. But Disney wanted to sell toys and please kids....and completely screwed it up.

I love Rian Johnson and have since I first saw Brick in high school. It was the exact movie I’d always wished I could make if I was a director. But 100x better. I do, sadly, not like the Last Jedi strictly because of how much it fails to hand off the ball to the third movie. He knew it was his job to make the empire strikes back, the second film in a trilogy. And the movie ends in a way where you have no idea where it’s going. But it was sad to see the hate he received. He is a master at what he does, and changes genres at will. Brick was a perfect Noir film, Looper a perfect sci fi movie, Knives out was a perfect murder mystery. He will always be one of my favorites and I get so excited anytime he has a new movie coming out
Personally I feel like the failings of the third movie are strictly it’s own. One could very easily envisage a sequel to The Last Jedi that was simply about the battle between Kylo-Ren and Rey. I think the real failing on people’s part is the expectation that trilogy would need to fall into the same format and presentation as the original.
TLJ literally gave episode 9 the perfect hand-off. That's why it's so baffling how badly they screwed up TROS. Rian gave them a lay-up and they still couldn't score.
@@ed1rko17 - this is 100% false. Like I said, I love Rian. But he kills of Snoke, the main antagonist. Reveals Rey was a nobody. Reveals Kylo is still bad but his motivation is still, be bad. There’s no obvious place to go. No set up at all. After Empire Strikes back, you find out Luke is Vaders son, how will that affect the next movie? Han is frozen, how will they undo that? Luke’s hand is chopped off. Our characters are at their lowest point. So we’re dying to see them rise up in the next film. Infinity War did this even better, ended on half the universe getting blipped out. Our heroes losing for the first time. TLJ ends with Rey seemingly as powerful as ever. Kylo getting humiliated, making him not intimidating. The resistance escaping and talking about how much hope they have. It feels like a pretty little bow. That’s what you should feel after the third film. Not the second of a trilogy

@@kevinandrewsphotoThe biggest problem with the “Rey is a nobody” thing is that it feels borderline 4th wall breaking. Like they were people. Was Rey on TH-cam or Reddit? Did she think she was a Kenobi or a Dooku or a Solo? NO! The reveal should have focused more on why she cares about her parents, and the fact that THEY never cared about her. But Rian had to frame it in the same way as the Luke reveal and it’s so distracting
He still doesn't understand why half of the SW fans don't like TLJ and the sequels for that matter. We'll never be united as a fan base and I don't want to because most SW fans are disgusting human beings. Good for everyone who likes-loves that movie but it wasn't the humor I didn't like, I hated the treatment of Luke and how Rey's Journey felt like it never got anywhere but she's still ultra powerful. Sequels are supposed to make you even more invested in the characters than before but it gave me nothing to like, just the knowledge that Rian doesn't seem to care for the original movies himself and doesn't like what TFA set up. Real shame as the sequels had great potential but I still think It was too little too late and the wrong people we're involved

As a writer I think he's hit and miss for me, didn't like star wars and Looper had a plot hole at the end that bugged me but then knives out and glass onion were very well written. I do think he's a superb director, he's got a talent for making some superb scenes and camerawork that stands out among other filmmakers nowadays
Looking back at his filmography, I've noticed I love so many of his movies, and there's not one thing he's done that I hate. I'll be watching everything he does.

I went to see The Last Jedi in cinemas and I remember thinking how much of a breath of fresh air it was. It took the universe into new territory. Sure, there were some shortcomings but the whole concept of anybody being force sensitive, instead of it being passed down through bloodlines, really appealed to me. I was really hoping they would open it up more with the third sequel, but alas, the fanboys forced JJ to create the mess that was The Rise Of Skywalker.

The Star Wars section of this is a rough watch. His points aren’t wrong, but it’s concerning that someone of his caliber and place has no concept of 1) taste or 2) refinement. Rain Johnson doesn’t understand subtlety, or what “understated” means. I guess if you put someone like that in charge of a big blockbuster franchise, The Last Jedi is what you get. His way is stylised and hitting you over the head. It makes sense.
Star Wars is as subtle as a brick in the face. I have no idea why some people think it isn’t. Johnson’s humour in his film is no more goofy and off the wall then most of the other films.
The Last Jedi to this day is the best star wars film for me . Its incredible how ill received it is/was I think it might age well like the prequels did

He's made two back to back extremely successful movies, he's in development on a TV that he created with his production company, and since he scored an insane deal with Netflix, he still has another Knive's Out movie to make. About 10% of the audience didn't like it, meanwhile about 90% did like it.

Looper is a modern Sci-fi classic at this point. If it were made back in the 80's/90's, people would remember it as we remember films like Robocop, Total Recall, Terminator 1 or even Blade Runner.
Not trying brake open that can of worms but regarding the Last Jedi… I see his point about how Star Wars had its moments of self aware humor in the original trilogy but I would ask Johnson in response to that, “is it that really what people like about Star Wars? Better yet, is that what people find memorable about Star Wars? In Return of the Jedi no less? And why would you think it’s a good idea to build a whole new Star Wars movie around that!?” I do like Johnson’s knack for unconventional storytelling but leaning in the opposite direction of people expectation without providing a more interesting alternative is never enough to cut it.
The issue with this self aware humor lies in the execution. The self aware humor in the original trilogy was a different type of humor. It was funny but did not make fun of star wars. What would have been nice would be just some normal marvel self aware humor but what we got was spaceballs humor. And it was actually good humor. Pretty funny gags. But put into the wrong movie.
People love the original trilogy because it's NOT 2001 A Space Odyssey. It's goofy and self aware and a total throwback to cheesy television serials, but with high production value and a grand vision. If the original trilogy were made today, with today's sense of humor and budget and production values, it would look way more like the Last Jedi than Force Awakens, and WAY more like Last Jedi than Rise...

I am one of the rare few who saw it in theaters, and I loved it. I've got it on blu-ray now, and to return to it regularly. One of my favorites.

Looper is one of the cleanest Sci-fis I've ever seen. Knives Out is the most clean whodunnit. This man is an absolute genius when it comes to screenwriting! Can't wait to see what he comes up with next!
Looper makes no sense and knives out is the most obvious whodunit ever when Chris Evans is the only character out of the suspects to share more than 1 scene with ana da armas. Not to mention the "SJW degree" line is a massive red flag for the character.

I thought it was awful. The dialogue in it is the most low-IQ easy to write trash I’ve seen in a movie, there’s no talent on display there, or understanding of taste, no unique voice. Just people acting like they’re above everything. A 10 year old could have written it, trying to write characters that are cool.
I don't really love every movie he has ever done but listening to him makes me really respect him as a story teller and film maker.

TLJ imo was simply odd shock value, tongue in cheek parody, and took one of cinema's most iconic heroes (Luke Skywalker) and dumped garbage all over him. The story just wasn't it and that's regardless of fan service which I am not necessarily a fan of either.

The media spent a long time calling Star Wars fans bigots, and conveniently didn't mention how there was no backlash to any casting or character in The Mandalorian (with the exception of people on Twitter accusing Dawson of being transphobic, or calling Carano anti-vax). They claimed the fans pushed Ahmed Best to the brink, even though he cites **the media** as the problem.
Th biggest problem LF created for itself was making a nostalgia bait trilogy and then attacking fans for not liking it, rather than just keeping quiet. Feige is a lesson in how to shut the f up when your movies get backlash. Perhaps this is why Johnson has to run away to Netflix and Peacock with Craig in tow, no studio wants to go anywhere near him?

The best part about the movie is that it's NOT a whodunnit. It starts as one, turns into a howcatchem, and then turns BACK into a whodunnit at the very end. Part of the reason why Glass Onion was much weaker, it is a bog-standard mystery whodunnit

Why does it matter that Hamill didn't agree with the writing during the filming? He isn't the writer, nor did he have a fully view on what the story was going to be about. I love Hamill with all my heart, but I don't care if he didn't agree with where Luke's mindset was in the beginning of TLJ.
Mark Hamill seemingly has also soften his critic against the movie. If you watch newer interviews of him, he has said TLJ is a "very underrated movie" and "after I've seen the movie, I was wrong." He also made a tweet about it.
The point is, don't try make seem Hamill seem to be an 'opponent' to certain groups in the fan base. He loves all the fans and respects their opinions.

He’s one of my favourite up and coming directors, has been since I watched Knives Out (I had seen The Last Jedi prior, but I had no concept of who wrote or directed it). I also really liked Looper and The Last Jedi has come out as one of my favourite Star Wars films. I’ll admit, he does kind of get up his own rear end a bit with how clever he tries to be, but I’d much rather that and a Director whose personal style I can understand and enjoy over another factory produced MCU movie where the director has as much creative input as the gaffer.

Episode VIII was a thread I really wish Disney had leaned into more. Had Rian been given the chance at his own trilogy for VII to IX, I think we would have had a much more cohesive story.

I love his statements about The Last Jedi. The relationship young people have with their heroes is such a Star Wars idea. TLJ was a great exploration of that idea and it is a beautiful film.
Director Panos Cosmatos has rightly pointed out that there is a "Tyranny of Perfection" in the film industry. If a film isn't scientifically perfect on every level, toxic fans are so quick to call it a failure and bully the filmmakers who made it, with studio heads only listening to the most toxic critics. I would much rather have a filmmaker make an earnest piece of art that tries to say something rather than a cynical, polished checklist of fan expectations.
Good on you, Rian. Will always be a fan.

While I’m not happy with The Last Jedi, I don’t entirely blame him for it. He’s the type of director that needs a whole new story, not to be confined in a story sandbox that’s been around for decades. He should not have been sandwiched into an active story that was already being told, that’s bad on Lucasfilm.
To be fair, even as someone who loves that film, I can admit it would likely have been better for the series as whole if he’d just been given his own thing, like if he’d been asked to do Rogue One for instance
I disagree. I think he tried doing his own thing with last Jedi whereas with ozymandias he stayed close to the formula set before him by Vince Gilligan and the other BB directors.
TLJ was great. I'm so glad they didn't try to copy Empire Strikes Back. Those who hated what Rian did simply wanted the copy, which is not how you make a good sequel.

I don't think the humor was what Star Wars fans took issue with, it was more like - everything else. Regardless, Rian Johnson is a remarkable writer and director, not every film has to knock it out of the park, I'm still looking forward to whatever he does next.

I agree but also directors tend to have a shorter filmography compared to actors because they have to spend a lot more time with each movie. Also Rian’s still young as a director so hopefully he’s got many more to go and one day they’ll have to make a part 2 :)

He really said “Star Wars isn’t serious” in a recent interview when the creator literally said the entire story is a tragedy.. what a complete waste of talent
George Lucas used the archetypes as expressed by Joseph Campbell. You should look for the Hours and Hours of videos with Joseph Campbell and George Lucas. The Greek tragedy and hero archetypes was always balanced by comedy archetypes. It's on record that the first Star Wars movie is a crappy crappy script - the actors hamming it up - Carrie using coke to get through it. Lucas in the meantime was inventing special effects that were inspired by dogfights in WWII films. I saw the first film in an empty huge cinema in Melbourne, Australia instead of doing an uni exam. When the finale flying sequences I knew I was watching it the start of the new decade of film. But his script? It was B Grade, something Lucas's admitted. The Campbell hero fi ally hits in the "you are my son" cliffhanger. Rian is right, you ate also right.

Rian Johnson has such a great mind for making original movies, but hearing him talk about Star Wars infuriates me cause he doesnt seem to know what he's talking about. He clearly focused too much on portraying his personal idea of what Star Wars is over just continuing the Star Wars story where it was heading. Say what you want about Lucas changing his mind multiple times, but at least he tried to make the first 6 films coherent and tell a singular story.

I love Rian Johnson and have since I first saw Brick in high school. It was the exact movie I’d always wished I could make if I was a director. But 100x better. I do, sadly, not like the Last Jedi strictly because of how much it fails to hand off the ball to the third movie. He knew it was his job to make the empire strikes back, the second film in a trilogy. And the movie ends in a way where you have no idea where it’s going. But it was sad to see the hate he received.
He is a master at what he does, and changes genres at will. Brick was a perfect Noir film, Looper a perfect sci fi movie, Knives out was a perfect murder mystery.
He will always be one of my favorites and I get so excited anytime he has a new movie coming out
Personally I feel like the failings of the third movie are strictly it’s own. One could very easily envisage a sequel to The Last Jedi that was simply about the battle between Kylo-Ren and Rey. I think the real failing on people’s part is the expectation that trilogy would need to fall into the same format and presentation as the original.
TLJ literally gave episode 9 the perfect hand-off. That's why it's so baffling how badly they screwed up TROS. Rian gave them a lay-up and they still couldn't score.
@@ed1rko17 - this is 100% false. Like I said, I love Rian. But he kills of Snoke, the main antagonist. Reveals Rey was a nobody. Reveals Kylo is still bad but his motivation is still, be bad. There’s no obvious place to go. No set up at all.
After Empire Strikes back, you find out Luke is Vaders son, how will that affect the next movie? Han is frozen, how will they undo that? Luke’s hand is chopped off. Our characters are at their lowest point. So we’re dying to see them rise up in the next film. Infinity War did this even better, ended on half the universe getting blipped out. Our heroes losing for the first time.
TLJ ends with Rey seemingly as powerful as ever. Kylo getting humiliated, making him not intimidating. The resistance escaping and talking about how much hope they have. It feels like a pretty little bow. That’s what you should feel after the third film. Not the second of a trilogy

The reveal should have focused more on why she cares about her parents, and the fact that THEY never cared about her. But Rian had to frame it in the same way as the Luke reveal and it’s so distracting

Good for everyone who likes-loves that movie but it wasn't the humor I didn't like, I hated the treatment of Luke and how Rey's Journey felt like it never got anywhere but she's still ultra powerful. Sequels are supposed to make you even more invested in the characters than before but it gave me nothing to like, just the knowledge that Rian doesn't seem to care for the original movies himself and doesn't like what TFA set up. Real shame as the sequels had great potential but I still think It was too little too late and the wrong people we're involved
I still think his best film is a tie between Looper & Knives Out.

As a writer I think he's hit and miss for me, didn't like star wars and Looper had a plot hole at the end that bugged me but then knives out and glass onion were very well written. I do think he's a superb director, he's got a talent for making some superb scenes and camerawork that stands out among other filmmakers nowadays

Say what you want about him and Star Wars, but he created one of the if not THE greatest episode in TV history, he certainly knows how to make the audience feel impact.
Yeah, I don’t care what anyone says. A filmmaker that prefers half the audience hate his movie rather than an entire audience love it makes absolutely zero sense. It rather shows you just want to be different to be different. That’s essentially being egocentric. And yes The Last Jedi was one of the worst movies made.

I went to see The Last Jedi in cinemas and I remember thinking how much of a breath of fresh air it was. It took the universe into new territory. Sure, there were some shortcomings but the whole concept of anybody being force sensitive, instead of it being passed down through bloodlines, really appealed to me. I was really hoping they would open it up more with the third sequel, but alas, the fanboys forced JJ to create the mess that was The Rise Of Skywalker.
TLJ had a clear vision behind it, TROS was shaped by focus groups.
TLJ was what forced to make TROS as an attempt to save the plot, don't get confused.

Brick lives on as Rian Johnson's best film.
The Star Wars section of this is a rough watch. His points aren’t wrong, but it’s concerning that someone of his caliber and place has no concept of 1) taste or 2) refinement. Rain Johnson doesn’t understand subtlety, or what “understated” means. I guess if you put someone like that in charge of a big blockbuster franchise, The Last Jedi is what you get. His way is stylised and hitting you over the head. It makes sense.
Star Wars is as subtle as a brick in the face. I have no idea why some people think it isn’t. Johnson’s humour in his film is no more goofy and off the wall then most of the other films.
He's a cool guy. No interest in Star Wars but I'll watch his other stuff. Brick was great!!

He's made two back to back extremely successful movies, he's in development on a TV that he created with his production company, and since he scored an insane deal with Netflix, he still has another Knive's Out movie to make.
And yes, was determined through scientific polling that it is a minority so small that they have to be extremely vocal to make their voices heard. About 10% of the audience didn't like it, meanwhile about 90% did like it.

Looper is a modern Sci-fi classic at this point. If it were made back in the 80's/90's, people would remember it as we remember films like Robocop, Total Recall, Terminator 1 or even Blade Runner.

I see his point about how Star Wars had its moments of self aware humor in the original trilogy but I would ask Johnson in response to that, “is it that really what people like about Star Wars? Better yet, is that what people find memorable about Star Wars? In Return of the Jedi no less? And why would you think it’s a good idea to build a whole new Star Wars movie around that!?”
I do like Johnson’s knack for unconventional storytelling but leaning in the opposite direction of people expectation without providing a more interesting alternative is never enough to cut it.
The issue with this self aware humor lies in the execution.
The self aware humor in the original trilogy was a different type of humor. It was funny but did not make fun of star wars. What would have been nice would be just some normal marvel self aware humor but what we got was spaceballs humor. And it was actually good humor. Pretty funny gags. But put into the wrong movie.
People love the original trilogy because it's NOT 2001 A Space Odyssey. It's goofy and self aware and a total throwback to cheesy television serials, but with high production value and a grand vision. If the original trilogy were made today, with today's sense of humor and budget and production values, it would look way more like the Last Jedi than Force Awakens, and WAY more like Last Jedi than Rise...
