This is truly a labor of love for the man who restores, maintains, and stocks these machines that are no longer made or supplied by the original vendors. He even has custom chopsticks or food made to keep them working. For example, the 27-second kitsune udon machine stopped being made in 2011, so finding parts or original food supplies is nearly impossible, but he keeps it going. There used to be a working one by the sea in the port of Tamano City, but it got destroyed by a typhoon in the mid 2010s. I look forward to eating it once more.

We should all be thankful for people like that who keep the past alive through their hard work so we can enjoy it. That particular machine is fondly remembered by someone in my family as it was a fixture in their high school lunchroom in Kurashiki back in the 1980's.

It's amazing what a country's technology can go towards when it's not mostly focused into military affairs. Imagine the progress of humanity if we didn't have to worry about the potential of wars against one another. All efforts in technology would funnel into the economy instead. Japan has many great examples of this. Great stuff.

Try visiting Japan, these vending machines are obsolete because they’re all replaced by Conbini, convenience stores. You can get whole a lot of things are convenience store they is open 24hrs 365 days out of the year. They sell snacks to freshly fried food to 50 different drinks to well just everything from condiments to underwear to shampoos to clothes to all. Yeah they’re replaced by convenience stores. Every 3 min there’s a convenience store in Japan if you live in Tokyo. We do still have vending machines, it’s usually right outside of an apartment, school, in the company premises etc. whenever you want something now just going downstairs. But most people head to convince store 3-5 min walk. In 100 square meters I probably have 7 convenience stores I can access to plus supermarkets. We don’t need these anymore.

Greeting from the USA! Japan never ceases to amaze me, I hope to travel there someday. This is just fascinating to see vintage and obscure vending machines I’ve never heard of before! Love how many things you both tried. The Cup Noodle, toasted sandwich and ramen machines were my favorites.
Makes American vending machines look so boring in comparison. Usually it’s just candy bars or other snacks we can get anywhere.

It’s true. I live in Tokyo and just in downstairs right outside of my apartment there are a few vending machines that has like 20 different cold and hot drinks from various kinds of sweeten and unsweetened tea to coffee to juice to pops to all. Two doors down there are other vending machines that have 20 plus different drinks etc. Then I walk 3 min and I have a super market three times bigger than regular US version of convenience stores that is open late till midnight. I walk 5 min to another direction I have 24 hr open super market that I can get pretty much everything. We love convenience for sure. These old retro style vending machines are often located not in big city but smaller suburban areas where you would need a car to travel.

You can straight up get fresh squeezed orange juice out of a vending machine in Japan as well as freshly cooked food. The vending machines cook better food than what is cooked by hand in the U.S.. I say this as an American.
