    Lyrics:
    Didn't we almost have it all
    When love was all we had worth giving?
    The ride with you was worth the fall my friend
    Loving you makes life worth living
    Didn't we almost have it all?
    The night we hold on 'til the morning
    You know you'll never love that way again
    Didn't we almost have it all?

    My Whitney story. I am in my seventies and I was at that concert 3rd row with my friend Gina. This was one of the eight concerts that I saw Whitney in the mid eighties, all in NY state. I met and talked to her on two occasions, once in Lake Placid and also Saratoga. We were obsessed with her and new we were seeing musical history in the making. At Lake Placid, we went to the Holiday Inn where they were staying around noon (the day of her concert) and saw Ricky Miner and some of her band in the lobby. Everyone was nice and told us Whitney would be coming to the restaurant at some point. Gina and I waited in the narrow hallway. About 30 minutes went by and we looked up and there was Whitney, Robyn Crawford and a bodyguard face to face 3 feet away from us. It was probably the most exciting, surreal feeling I have ever had. Having seen all her videos numerous times she was so beautiful like a Barbie doll come to life right before our eyes. It was just the 5 of us. We told her how much we loved her and couldn't wait to see her that night. We talked to her for about 5 minutes and she signed my vinyl album. A little later she came out of the restaurant and signed some autographs. Gina and I talked to Robyn off to the side during that time and she was really cool. We were in the first row that night. We had seats in row 16 already so we gave two girls $100 to change seats with us. Of the 8 times I saw her, 5 of those were 1st or 2nd row from stage. Too see Whitney live was so incredible and there is no doubt in my mind she is the greatest singer of all time (I have seen many of the best during my life). This video at Saratoga Maybe the best of all of her live videos and I feel so blessed to have been there to see it. I remember her telling the audience they were doing the video and everyone was so excited about it. I also met her brother Gary at Saratoga Radisson hotel in the afternoon of her concert and he gave me 2 3rd row seats after I showed him my 300 page album I had made to honor her. She looked thru my album and jokingly asked if I was giving it to her and I said I don't think so, she autographed my album which I still have. I also gave her roses each of the two years she performed at the NY state fair when she did her first song, one being "How will I Know".

Only ones I see come SLIGHTLY and key word here is SLIGHTLY similar/close would be Cissy(in youth), Dionne(in youth), Cece, Glennis, Tarralyn. Whitney was unpolished and authentic, I always felt that she was saying goodbye to the love of her life. Didn't We Almost Have It All was from Whitney's second album. She was not a superstar yet but she was on her way up. I have always felt Whitney was in the process of making a heartbreaking choice of choosing her career over love. To me it seems that every bit of her heartbreak was laid bare on the stage the night she did this performance. I am so glad it was recorded and used as a video for the song. I never could have imagined when I used to play in on my VCR over and over again that Whitney would pass away young.

Since Whitney’s death, Robyn revealed that the rumors were true. Bobby Brown has confirmed that Whitney was in a relationship with Robyn before he married Whitney. He said he did not know Robyn and Whitney were more than friends until after he married Whitney. Whitney could not come out as gay or bisexual because the music industry was not having it. Also, Whitney’s mother Cissy was not accepting of any notion of Whitney being gay. I saw Cissy in an interview she was asked would she have a problem if it was revealed that Whitney was gay? Cissy said Yes! Cissy was asked the question again she said Yes! I believe Whitney could not truly be herself. She was in a tough spot. Part of having that career was no longer being with Robyn romantically. hI believe this performance was her goodbye to her true love.

      @David Plush The way ballads were recorded in the 1970's-1980's..sometimes it made it difficult for the vocalist to sing it the way it was recorded in the studio.. She had such a """"BIG """..voice and she did have her struggle's like Judy Garland did. A recording can be edited and little tricks in a verse to lesson the range... Then again Whitney was a great vocalist...Mezzo-Soprano..and she could soar....and dive to control her instrument..

    • @captainbryce1
      @captainbryce1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gigigiseleworld Everything you say is true here. Recordings do offer the most "engineered" (and frankly impossible to replicate) versions of songs for any artist. They selectively parse the best attempts from the best takes and compile them all together to create the version of the song the producer wants. But in many cases, this version of the song is not "sustainable" in terms of being able to sing in a concert tour day in and day out. The second thing is, it's not necessarily the vocalists preferred interpretation of the song either. Even though the study version of this song is vocally more challenging, it doesn't deliver the same emotional impact as the live version. Whitney's unique interpretation of the song when singing it live gives it not only an authenticity lacking from the study version, but really enables you to feel the emotion and passion that she bring to the lyrics. She is able to "perform" the song and emote the way that she wants to with her phrasing and delivery. This is an interpretation of the song that's very different from the study version. In the study version you're like, wow that was vocally impressive. In the live version, you almost want to cry at the end of this because you can see and hear the pain and regret in her voice at lost love. It's almost as though she is acting in a play; she makes it into a completely different song.

      This is what makes me happy ! When people like you can describe a voice.. it’s more than just holding a note. When you have the techniques as you mentioned, THATS when I will listen to these current singers. Whitney and others from her time had talent, and they had some of the techniques you mentioned! But by all means, Whitney had the whole formula from resonance, pitch, accuracy, melismas, agility, falsetto, dynamics, breath control, connected registers, interpretation, musicality, I could go ON! She wasn’t human 😭✨

      don’t forget her stamina and singing mannerism that she learned from Dionne Warwick.

      @@ronjon5962 Yes to ALL of this and she was completely comfortable on stage! No jitters or nervousness. She stood on that stage, had fun and delivered! I saw her twice: in 87 and 92 and she blew me away ❤
