Thanks Grace!!! you are one of the first reviewers that is not ignoring Alejandro's speech !!!! I can't believe the others are just not even mentioning it !!!
Beyond The Trailer I can't disagree more with you! I don't wanna see politics here! First of all, I wouldn't say activism is politics and it is important and I want equality for each and every person of all races and sexual orientations etc. But I don't watch Oscars for that, I watch it for movies because it is a film ceremony. I watched it to see films honored and rewarded and I didn't see that. All I saw were activist speeches. And because the choices for Best Animated Feature, Best Director and Best Picture were so bad, I am considering if ever to watch it again.
As for the Eddie Redmayne win, I do feel that Eddie was the most deserving in the category. I feel like the nomination will allow him to get more work, especially since he was the star of the film that just won best picture.
Best moments - Eddie Redmayne's acceptance speech J.K Simmons winning best supporting actor (as if that was a shock) Patricia Arquette's acceptance speech Glory performance (which reminded us why the Selma movie should have had more nominations) Glory winning best original song Lady Gaga's performance (good grief who knew she could sing like that) Oh and the Oscar for most awkward creepiness goes to.....John Travolta.
Eddie Redmayne deserved his win for sure, some of the best acting Ive seen in a movie in a long time, also Big Hero 6 was the best Animation in my mind, Disney will forever be on top for Animation amongst many other things.
I'm so proud of Alejandro Iñárritu! I'm so glad that mexican movie makers are being recognised Grace, thanks for those kind words to us, mexican viewers :)
Best moments of the night: Lady Gaga´s stellar performance. That chick is so talented, pop, Jazz, Dance, Sound of Music... anything. John Legend´s "Glory". Seeing an amazing actress like Julianne Moore getting an oscar (pure class). Seeing how happy Redmayne was with his award. And seeing a genuine surprise with The Imitation Game winning Best Adp. Screenplay, which led to the most emotive speech of the night. Many people cried at that moment too.
The Oscars isn't the VMAs or Tonys. I always avoid the Oscars because of the long musical pieces (but I did see the Lady Gaga performance, amazing!). There needs to be more celebration of everyone who is involved in the production of movie making. This includes the technical, business, and production aspects. Why not give a five minute tribute to all the smaller guys behind the scenes? Or even the big producers? Or how about the critics, public movie goers, and movie theaters? Yes the Oscars is a prestige event, but it's such a huge industry with so many interesting moving parts that, strangely, needs more recognition.
There is a separate award show for the technical side. Did you not see them have a whole segment showing the highlights from that show? Yes, it's not publicized, cause it's just not that entertaining. Hearing about the design of equipment and specs and stuff scientist did is hardly a show.
I actually like that what they do. Just the movie-makers and the viewers. Yeah critics and businessmen and theatres have their role - but the true magic is in the art IMHO
Those Team Coco Remotes are an example of taking something boring and turning it into something fun. It seems fairly cheap to do. Or they could just insert something like those round table clips from The Hollywood Reporter. You don't have to make the entire show about the "unknowns" of Hollywood, but pepper it in to add interest.
Very upset that Big Hero 6 won. So much for the Academy meaning anything. On a plus note, Neil Patrick Harris was a great host and Lady Gaga's performance was fantastic.
Grace Randolph I love how Neil said "If you're at an Oscar party with any of the guys who made The Lego Movie, this is the part of the show when you distract them." LOL and so true
Hey Grace, I've been watching your videos for a few years now. I just wanted to thank you for all of your work and insight into the movie business. It's appreciated.
I still think that the Academy should definitely consider a 'best special performance' category that can cover motion capture, voice acting, etc. any performance that is not covered by the current categories. It's a travesty that these efforts continue to go unnoticed. And it absolutely should be mandatory for voters to see all of the nominated films (and perhaps educate those voters who still consider the animation category as 'just a bunch of films for kids' and consequently vote according to what their kid liked best - it's insulting, and its a very outdated point of view).
Hey Grace, love you and your show!! I was thinking if you ever thought to add some live reactions parts to these awards videos! I think it would be a lot of fun! think about that ;) thanks!
Eddie Redmayne, or Reddie Edmayne as Stephen Fry said, had a much better performance than Michael Keaton. But, like you I kinda wanted to see Keaton win. I was happy either way, I LOVE Stephen Hawking and Redmayne was better and MUCH more tested in my opinion. I still wish Miles Teller, my lover, was nominated also. If he wasn't a drummer in real life he probably would have been.
Can I make a request? When you mention a previous review that you have done, can you put a link in the video. I usually watch your vids in full screen mode and you are good about putting links to different time stamps in that video, but it would be nice to be able to jump to a previous review you have mentioned. Example: in this review you mentioned your previous review of 'Boyhood'. I had not seen that review as the movie did not interest me. However, since you mentioned it here - it might be nice to click over and watch it. (Obviously I could minimize the vid and search youtube for it.... but you sometimes do spoiler reviews and regular reviews, so which to I watch to get the full understanding of what you are referencing?) Thank you.
I'm so glad Big Hero 6 won ! It was such a deserving film and even though I myself would have been conflicted if Lego had also been in the category I knew it was better than HTTYD2. Despite everyone thinking that the Academy is a senile racist society they are actually the opposite. They gave the award to a movie that was innovative from a technological and storytelling perspective that was also the most diverse film of the year. Every win was on point last night - the only exception being Neil's jokes unfortunately.
Not really, it was an adaptation, there was nothing original or new. Not even emotional since it was kind of predictable. While the others and the lego movie (which totally deserved it) where ful of originality, emotion and even social commentary (the lego movie). Big hero 6 was good but it didnt deserve the oscar. Oh well but is disney so...
Well I think its odd to compare "social commentaries" since different people value different messages. I preferred Big Hero 6's commentary on mortality and grief and revenge more. It was the first time I saw death in an animated film used as more than just a plot point. Elsa needed to become queen, Simba needed to become king and Hiccup needed to become chieftain. The very point of BH6 was death and rebirth. The others were good (I also loved Kaguya and Song of the Sea) but I think the visual and audio societies also pushed it to the win.
Dominic Samaroo Visual awards societies are a joke.. They don't matter... Disney is CLEARLY Favorited when it comes to the animation category. A LOT of voters didn't see all and still voted BH6... Yep.. Oscars are A JOKE.
Here are my best actor predictions for 2016 Oscars Tom Hanks(Cold War Thriller) Leonardo DiCaprio(The Revenant) Bryan Cranston(Trumbo) Michael Fassbender(Jobs/Macbeth) Eddie Redmayne(The Danish Girl) Bottom Five George Clooney(Hail Cesar!) Joaquin Phoenix(Woody Allen Project) Jake Gyllenhaal(Southpaw) Matthew McConaughey (Sea of Trees) Andrew Garfield(Silence) P.S:It would be awesome if Kurt Russell was nominated for the Hateful Eight
As I understand Animation film nominations are awarded by the Animation Industry Specialists and voted by every academy member. So the winner is almost always the most popular title among adults. Because the nominations are selected by the specialists, they include great ARTHOUSE/Indie/Foreign animation titles that the popular film-goers will completely ignore.
The Birdman walk of shame was great, especially when they crossed over the drum score with Whiplash having Miles Teller play the drums. That worked perfectly! And Grace, what did you think about the Lopez's song "Moving Pictures?"
Hi Grace. I see that you never mentioned anything about the Visual Effects, Costume Design or Hair and Make-Up categories. I know that the actors and directors are probably the most important at the Oscars, but do you think the design crew deserve much more credit than what they are given? I personally didn't really care who won best actor or actress, but I was super gutted that Guardians of the Galaxy didn't win hair and make-up. Thank you!
Technical side needs way more credit from mass-media definitely, particularly seeing as the actors/directors/script-writers talk about their importance and ability at every opportunity.
Juan Pablo Rueda I think Grand Budapest was the more deserving winner because I'm sure Guardians used a lot of CGI as well as prosthetics, while Grand Budapest used prosthetics but no CGI. Academy voters like it when you go old school without looking like it's old school, which is also why Interstellar deservedly won Best Visual Effects.
there are a ton of responses, but not sure if you all have addressed the fact that John Stephens and Lonnie Lynn are actually the gov't names of John Legend and Common. They are the writers of the song.
Filmmakers want to down on comicbook movies but one of the biggest things they fail to realize is how sophisticated the storytelling can be. It always struck me that yeah they are fantastical stories but so much is rooted in truth about human nature, political views, societal problems, systemic worldwide dilemmas, vices and deep rooted problems. And its all usually presented not just with great visual art but masterful, engaging storytelling. If the movies can take just a bit of that and bring us compelling stories that inspire us, make us think and make us aware yet still are wonderful to immerse yourself in because they make us dream then we will continue to pay to see them. Storytelling is a an art that goes back to the dawn of man. Movies are one of the best mediums but please bring us good stories.
I think its a shame that there is such an apparent divide between the expected future success of a Best Actor winner and a Best Actor nominee. Michael Keaton should be offered just as many roles going forward as he would have it he had one. Coming in 2nd (or 5th for that matter) shouldn't demote him to the level of the hundreds of actors who's work wasn't even recognized. I really hope we see much more great work from Keaton in the near future.
The problem with the prediction box thing was that it was a magic trick out of context. Prediction tricks like that work well for a stage magic show, but it wasn't presented like a magic trick. People weren't in the mindset that NPH was going to be doing magic, so instead of being amazed or filled with wonder people ended up just feeling deceived. A trick like that probably would have worked better if NPH slipped in other illusions or prefaced with other small predictions at the top of the show. I didn't think NPH did a bad job, he was just working with poor material and when he went to the audience he got people that weren't ready to be interacting. The only one that seemed to get it was Steve Carell when they did their little bit.
Anyone who sees Birdman as anti-superhero is totally missing the point. It's more about Hollywood and being typecast -- the fallout from previous successes. It's a story of ressurection, like a phoenix, aka "Birdman".
Neil Harris is the master/leader of the magicians club in Las Vegas where they have all this historical objects dedicated to magic. I believe his suitcase trick was a homage to his favorite hobby, but unless you knew this already you didn't get his reference
They have the Oscars so late so everyone gets to see them. Although people don't release movies in January/February because it's good for audiences, it's because it's new for award's season and creates bigger hype. So if you had them in early January, then you've still got plenty of the holiday season for the audiences, and you can make it a REAL surprise and ultimately a better, more entertaining show.
Hey Grace, I have been a long time viewer of the show and was even one of the many viewers flooding you with the question when was "Think about the Ink" going to make its return(thanks btw 😉)...but I have a question and I know you did touch base on it already in this video but I wanted to know something...why is it that comic book movies such as Captain America, X-men, and Guardians of the Galaxy that did so well at the box office and received great reviews from the public and different critics are not contenders at the Oscars? Is it because their is no emotional ties to comic book films like the other Oscar contenders such as Selma and Boy Hood etc. or is it because they do not have a serious tone like majority of the movies that won last night, what could it be and what can be done to get comic book movies in contention at the Oscars? I hope you can answer this question love the show and you opinions on the many wonders of the MOVIE AND COMIC BOOK UNIVERSE 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Glad you're feeling better, Grace. I watched the entire show last night with my mom and sister. I enjoyed the show quite a bit. Better than the last few shows I think. I do think we could have done without several, if not most of all the songs sung as well as some of the tributes, which IMO didn't amount to much. I was confused as to why only Sound of Music got a tribute and no other movies really got one. I was floored by Lady GaGa's performance. I'm not a fan of hers (though, I don't think I am her target demographic), but I was delightfully surprised how classy and elegant her performance was. I was also very impressed with her voice. I was surprised Michael Keaton didn't win the best actor Oscar, which I was hoping he would. I thought Neil Patrick Harris wasn't bad for the host. I thought quite a few of his jokes were funny. Not saying they were the best, but of all the hosts I've seen personally host the Oscars, he's been the best. Now, I'm quite young and haven't seen many Oscar shows, so maybe for others, this pales in comparison to previous shows. And also, I really don't expect much from the Oscars show. I've often found them boring. This year however it actually kept my interest the whole way through. Part of that I owe to shows like BTT, informing me and making it more thought provoking and exciting to see who will win. :)
Oscar date moved to early January? Sadly, the holidays are a busy time for me and my family, both before and after Christmas. Not much time to attend movies. So we use late January & February to catch up. Not fun seeing the Oscars if you haven't seen at least most of the films
Beyond The Trailer you cannot say to the academy "hey. Vote for keaton, because he needs a career." You can say "vote for keaton because he was better"
After I saw Birdman I thought Michael Keaton had given the performance of his life. What a disappointment he didn't win last night. He deserved it. But then, maybe he's only at 9 inches of his 12 inch ruler. Hoping he'll have a chance to shine once again and finally get that well-deserved Oscar. Lots of actors work and work and work and never achieve the Oscar until they get it for their body of work. We'll see.
Instructions Not Included made $44.4 million domestically on a limited release. and additional $54.6 million World Wide not playing in many major markets like the UK, China, Japan, etc. And that's on a $5 million budget. Impressive by any measure.
It was kinda unfair that Big Hero 6 won, it's most widely distributed therefore had the greater chance of winning. If the other films were more widely viewed ect. than it would be a lot fairer.
Yep! And just cause its Disney..Its sad.. because these acadamy members don't appreciate art.. Don't get me wrong I liked BH6.. But it was like the 3rd or 4th best out of all the nominees.
***** True, but the amazing animation of Princess Kaguya and The Song of the Sea sadly did not get the attention it deserved. If they had distributed it more globally than in opinion it would have been fairer.
Grace, even if you don't think Big Hero 6 deserved the Oscar, you gotta give it some credit for accomplishing these things: 1. Finally giving an Oscar for a superhero film 2. Giving an Oscar to a racially diverse film And many do actually like the film, so its not surprising the people that voted mostly liked BH6 (although I do doubt that really much, since they already confessed they didn't watch the majority of them.) And GRACE: ONE QUESTION: DID YOU NOT HEAR THE ROCK CALLING ANIMATION A GENRE? CAUSE THAT ABSOLUTELY INFURIATED ME.
the only reasons big hero 6 won was because: 1: The Lego Movie wasn't nominated (the voters even said they were upset that wasn't on there) 2: that's the only movie they actually saw. the only reason big hero 6 really became popular was because of baymax, the asian look, and the disney/marvel name. take those three things out, and what do you have? a boring, overdone superhero story with a message about death that the film really didnt need (i felt like it was there just for emotional appeal). big hero 6 absolutely did not deserve the oscar, and it's disgusting that it won.
***** heard of opinions, ma'am? all the nominated films are critically acclaimed, so why is it so hard to understand that it wins? yea, sure, take all those out. ALL the things that make up the style and plot of the film. take out Baymax, the core and important character that drives the plot forward. take out the asian look, because why not, its not like its a unique style that has a character of its own. and also take out Disney AND Marvel, who created the film. so let's give it to that The Nut Job studio cause why not. how about this? Lego: take out Emmett, everything Lego, and the Warner Bros/Lego brand name. what do you have? nothing. Dragon 2: take out Toothless, viking look, and DreamWorks brand name. what do you have? nothing.
Tim Tran what I _meant_ was take away the name recognition of Disney/Marvel. Also, what I meant by the Asian aspect is that wasn't needed for the story. They could have set it in San Francisco and nothing would have changed. Also, I meant take away Baymax's major part in the story. Maybe spend some time getting to know the other team members, who are literally just one dimensional stereotypes (the quirky blonde, the comic relief, the one who's afraid of germs, the "cool kid" who's always chewing bubblegum for some reason). I feel like I would've liked it more if it had been a team movie, not just about Hiro dealing with a forced death (because fuck it, it's a Disney movie! We can't even have the aunt be his mom!).
***** well, thats certainly your opinion, and i hope you understand that people actually like the film. but why are you even complaining? all the 3 mainstream films got major animation awards. Hero for Oscar Dragon for Annie AND Globe Lego for BAFTA they're evenly divided and shouldnt be compared in terms of quality. Lego won the most awards, Dragon won the 2nd most. Hero only have Oscar. so why cant Hero win for once (and dont give me your opinion of the film because personal opinions are completely subjective and we should all look at how the general audience view the films, which is, all 3 are great and deserve at least 1 award)
Tim Tran it just feels like the win was for commercial reasons, instead of how good the film actually was (Frozen, anyone?) Hell, even the voters said they only voted for it because their kids liked it.
This is the best oscar year for mer! Almost everything went just how i wanted it to. If only "Interstellar" had won for score, but i'll can live with that loss. "Birdman"
One thing I learned from the Oscars last night was, for you to become the Best Actor/Actress, one must have a flop movie playing in theaters not a while ago. For that, I thank Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son. They made these actors won! :D #justkidding
Tom Cross, the guy who won the Oscar for editing Whiplash, grew up close to where I live. Rochester, New York has always had a great history with the Oscars. Not only is it the headquarters of Kodak, but we've had several Oscar-winning or nominated figures from the area--Tom Cross, Robert Forster, Kristen Wiig, and of course, Philip Seymour Hoffman (RIP).
I am totally against the idea of giving and a "more seasoned" actor an award just because a younger actor will have more opportunities in the future to win. The awards should be based solely on the work nominated, not past work (save that for the lifetime achievement award - speaking of which did they have one this year) or future potential.
I really enjoyed your views on the Oscars so thanks for the coverage. As always different than what may be discussed elsewhere. Just wondering, I remember that you didnt care for Big Hero 6 but Im not sure I quite understand exactly why. I too had problems with Frozen. I thought much of the story was underdeveloped but overall it was enjoyable and the kids love it so whats better than that? I still have no idea why Elsa has powers..etc, etc, etc (and I reeeeally dislike Idina Menzels screaming vicals). I know with BH6 the villain and the fact that Takahashi (you know...spoiler) Didn't sit well with you. But maybe because I have a six year old I look at it differently. Not only did we laugh together because it was fun, funny and exciting but we were caught up emotionally as well. To look over and see her quietly crying at the end let me know that this movie touched her. And that is part of the point of a good movie. To feel through the story and the charachters. Do you not feel that may have some merit and perhaps make up for some of the movies flaws? Just wondering.
I agree there seems to be an idea that mainstream movies are somehow beneath more indie or oscar type movies. I enjoy a great deal of the movies that end up getting nominated for oscars, but I also like to watch superhero movies and a bunch of other mainstream movies and I don't like the stuck up attitude of some people who decide that if you like something that a lot of other people enjoy you somehow have bad taste or are "just following the crowd". I sometimes really appreciate mainstream movies more so than the more prestigious movies because sometimes you can just tell that some of the more prestigious movies are mainly the actors trying to win an oscar where mainstream movies really just have what the audience wants and gives you a good time, so it doesn't feel like you are being talked down to.
I believe Big Hero 6 tells a more original and relevant coming of age story than Dragon 2, but YES - I conpletely agree with you on Disney Animation's execution. I dont, however, believe Dreamworks deserves any nursing. It's good theyre limiting their releases. Maybe this way they can make better and bigger films. The only ones I like are Kung Fu Panda, Croods, and Dragon.
For me Neil Patrick Harris's opening number was great, then he struggled with the jokes like you said Grace, and tried a little too hard to be like Ellen DeGeneres. However, he won me back with his parody of Michael Keaton's Birdman underwear scene. That was hilarious, especially with Miles Teller playing drums in the background. I was wondering where the envelope gag would go, but I liked the outcome at the end, as I think it was made to be a reference to Neil Patrick Harris' own interest and abilities as a traditional stage pull-the-rabbit-out-of-a-hat magician. Comparing him to Seth MacFarlane and Ellen DeGeneres, I'd say he was better than Seth, because he didn't resort to dirty distasteful jokes, but not as good as Ellen. Her stand up background helped her a lot as a host, while I think Neil at first was still stuck for a while in his Tony Awards hosting format. But he was certainly far better than James Franco and Anne Hathaway.
Celebrities need to get their facts straight when it comes to activism. Specially with the "equal pay for women" speech. women already get equal pay in America.
I agree that some of the activism felt a little like they were cheering on a subject they had no idea about. I very much believe in equality and equal pay. Her speech didn't bring that up though. All she said was it's time women have equal rights. Well depending on how you look at what she said in 2015 it is a lot more equal then it was 30-40 years ago when second wave feminism existed. I mean some how I have a feeling that those feminists and advocates of equal rights would be rather happy with what women have been able to accomplish. Now if indeed it was a matter of money in the work place well then what Grace said is true. Someone who is more qualified should be getting the same if not more money. John Legend's speech was not very well done. Like ***** said people are in jail because they did something wrong. Yes the legal system can be wrong sometimes but when it comes down to it most of the time no matter what the race of the person is if you commit a crime you should be in jail. The whole speech made it sound like somehow a black man deserves to be free over every other man who commit a crime. Both these speeches should have been presented better than they were. If you can't expand on it in a way that is going to look at something from both side then don't say it at all An acceptance speech at the Oscars is not enough time to say that. If these celebrities want to do this they should take the time to actually talk about it.
I find it sad that all three of the shorts categories are always ignored, even by the academy, so none of the most worthy films are awarded. When Feast won best animated short, my jaw dropped. It was the weakest of all of the shorts, and though I wanted The Dam Keeper to win, I would have been happy with any short other than Feast winning. It's sad to see voters looking at Disney's name and not the content, especially the creativity that ALL the other shorts showed. The same went for live-action short. The Phone Call was good, but not the best of the bunch. It was the safe choice.
Redmayne was really good as hawking and his speech was cute but it was a oscarbait performance in a oscarbait movie. Birdman won the major awards except for best actor. Go figure. I think keaton deserved to win but the fact that his peers didnt vote for him (sag) must have been a slap in the face. I hope he gets more good roles.
At the end of the day, acting oscars are based off performances, not careers, not comebacks, not it being an actor's "turn." Michael Keaton was not the best performance of the year, that was Eddie Redmayne who has been rightfully rewarded. The difference between Keaton and the other categories (where there was a lot of career rewarding) is that the other actors/actresses were the best in their respective fields and deserving of the win. JK Simmons, Patricia Arquette and Julianne Moore have all had lengthy careers that deserve recognition, but they were rewarded for being the best performances in their respective categories (unlike Keaton). Keaton wasn't even the best performance in the film - that lies squarely on Edward Norton's shoulders. I do believe it is an easy way out to award a dramatic performance over other genres (comedy, horror, etc), but the right man won and age and career timing should never come into play when considering who did the best performance. TL;DR Eddie Redmayne, we are proud. Michael Keaton, all the best for the future but there was never any contest.
Thanks for the nod, Grace. I own Birdman on the blu-ray and is still that good of film. I normally don't see indie films in theaters simple because I could enjoy these great films in the comfort of my home and not to mention the limited places these movies play in theaters which required some bit of traveling. So many recommendation for Birdman that convince me to make the effort to these see it and it had nothing do with super hero genre it was just making fun of actors and hollywood.
Well, one thing about Big Hero 6 is that the original comic was created by Man of Action, the same team that created Generator Rex and Ben 10, and there are some similarities there!
I personally think Boyhood deserved Best Picture more, and not just because it was filmed over a course of 12 years. I thought it was one of the most realistic films ever made, and having looked back at the Academy's history, practically no coming-of-age film ever won Best Picture, and this one was a game changer. I was very happy for Patricia Arquette, J.K. Simmons and Julianne Moore's win. Steve Carell was my personal pick to win Best Actor. For each actor/actress, I look for the one who makes me forget I'm watching an actor. I'm very glad for "Glory" winning Best Original Song, and I'm very happy The Grand Budapest Hotel won several craft categories, and thank God Interstellar won Best Visual Effects. Song Of The Sea was my personal choice to win Best Animated Feature (although The Lego Movie should have been nominated), but I'm glad for Big Hero 6's win. Sorry, Grace, but I found both How To Train Your Dragon and How To Train Your Dragon 2 underwhelming. I rented those films because you raved about them so much, saying they were beautiful, flawless, amazing, sophisticated, etc. They were beautiful, but as a whole, I could only give them an 8 out of 10 instead of a 10 out of 10.
Grace you say "the academy hasn't forgiven Micheal for playing Batman." Why do you feel that way? Christain Bale played Batman and they gave him the award. Both Micheal and Eddie's performance were great BUT Eddie went above and beyond. It doesnt matter what they done in the past or future. The award is for 2014 and Eddie deserved it for his performance.
George Clooney, considered by many to be the worst Batman ever, has won 2 Oscars. Clearly the Academy is forgiving. But when you have an actor playing an actor vs. an actor playing Stephen Hawking, which one do you think might draw a voter's interest more, regardless of who's playing whom?
Grace, keep in mind, Eddie Redmayne's performance was more relevant than Michael Keaton's performance. We've had the ice bucket challenge recently, which was all for the benefit of ALS awareness. Eddie Redmayne played a character with ALS. Eddie Redmayne's Oscar win also aligns with Julianne Moore's Oscar win, as both Redmayne and Moore portrayed characters suffering from neurological diseases.
Glad you didn't back down when it came to Big Hero 6. I was really ticked when it got the award and honestly I don't consider the Oscars credible because of decisions like that.
I thought the Oscar show was fun and entertaining. It was the first Oscars that I have ever watched from start to finish and I am glad I did. Even though later the day I was in a zombie mode at school. (It aired in finland from 3.30 am to 7 am)
After the Best Animation result, I went back and rewatched both Big Hero 6 and How to train your Dragon 2, and I have to say...the wrong film got the award. Big Hero 6 is just too emotionally manipulative and the plot too contrived to beat out How to train your Dragon 2, which provided a more emotionally complex story and sustained a much stronger story, at least until the last five minutes. So I was and am very upset with who took the award, especially considering the voter comments that have been released and the continued disgraceful allowance of voters being able to have an opinion and cast their vote when they haven't actually seen all of the films that are nominated.
I think The Tale of princess Kaguya should have won best animated feature it was amazing the story was developed beautifully and the animation was gorgeous but then I'm a sucker for hand drawn I feel the academy always picks the most popular movie for best animated feature whereas they actually look at the quality in every other category which is disappointing.
To make a point on the wage gap issue in Hollywood, I do think that the reason why male actors are being paid more than female actors us because actors are free agents. They're salaries are usually based on how many people are willing to pay to go see them. Probably the reason why Chris Hemsworth (He play's Thor, a big budget franchise) to Charlize Theron (which A Million Ways bombed at the box office) The same can be said in the music industry, artists like Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna earn more money than male artists like Bruno Mars or Drake because they generally sell more albums, singles, and more sold out shows. My point is in the entertainment industry, it' s not the usual 9 to 5 job that regular people have. That's opinion on the issue...
Please sign Eddie to a Marvel film ! He would be amazing. And I must respectfully disagree Grace - i don't think a superhero role will torpedo prestige forever. Just look at what Matthew Mcchonnaughey accomplished last year despite his past. Keaton's performance this year was good, but the fact that he was playing himself just detracted from it enough to let Eddie truly be the deserving winner.
Skyebright1 I think he could have been Doctor Strange, but besides for that there are no roles yet that would really do him justice at Marvel. I'm crossing my fingers he play's Thane in Infinity War. That is quite a while away though.
Film is entertainment. I don't feel like it should be a platform for Hollywood to teach the populace. We should learn our lessons from those are are better equipped to deliver a reasonable, educated viewpoint. I no longer watch the Oscars. I rarely feel that the nominations are justified. The show itself is nearly unwatchable. Your 30 minute review was far more enjoyable than the two or three 5 minute sessions I had last night, when I walked into the TV room where my wife was watching the show.... only to walk out shortly thereafter. Once again - great review.
The wage gap number of 70% or 77% of the dollar is based on US census data. It does not account for job choice, education, or job experience. That number represents the average of all of the salaries of American women compared to the average salaries of American men. Say what you will about the existence of a gap, but the fact is women with the same education, job title, and work experience as men almost certainly make more than 80% of the male dollar. This is because the US census data effectively acts as a lower limit for any possible gender wage gap, as it does not account for individual choice. This is not to say anything about the existence of a wage gap, nor does this reflect any of my opinion. These are facts based on US census data. On top of this, any data that shows a wage gap does not give any evidence to a cause.
I think that Alejandro's speech didn't come out of nowhere. It was a direct response to Sean Penn's statement "Who gave this son of a b*tch his greencard?" If it was a joke, it was in poor taste and Kudos to Alejandro for responding so subtly and elegantly.
I think that it was all part of the show. Alejandro and Sean Penn are very good friends, remember 21 Grams? It is another movie of Alejandro and Sean starred in that movie, awesome movie btw.
Alex Meyer I did hear him say that and it may be true, but I do feel like, despite not being offended, it was that remark that prompted him to have something to say about immigration (however subconscious it was). I also think that, even if it was meant as a joke, it was in poor taste and deserved a response.
Grace the nominated original song “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” written by Glen Campbell and Julian Raymond for the documentary feature “Glen Campbell...I’ll Be Me,” Not Glen Ford. Keep Well.
I totally agree with you with Big Hero 6 I mean seriously I am so scared for Dreamworks now since I love that studio so much and Big Hero 6 yes was so poorly executed And I love your review on the show too! Even though I thought this was the best show I have seen so far
do you seriously think Big hero 6, a film you call poorly executed, is worse than Peabody and Penguins? Yea, Dragons 2 is good, but you love the studio that brings 1 good film out of 3 vs Disney that brings 1 and yet still garner critical acclaim?
thats true, but Ghibli needed it more. it already closed its door, their last 2 films flopped at the box office, and NO oscar win. Ghibli deserve it more.
yea, DreamWorks cant make any deals, but it's because of one of their main flaws: lack of money making potential. all of their original films felt risky and many of them did not pay off. so not a lot of people knew that film so we should just ignore it? while DreamWorks is still being considered as pop-cultured referenced, weak branded, inconsistent film qualities, and oversaturation of the medium, Ghibli Studio is regarded all over the world as the Disney of the East, King of Anime, Epitome of hand drawn, storytelling, and characterization of Japan. and you want Kaguya, a superior movie to Dragon 2, to win the oscar because the studio is struggling and not because the film is good? because its more popular, so it should win, because no one cares about indie films anymore right? -__-
As a potential filmmaker, 50 Shades of Grey upset me greatly. I know many people saw it and many people probably wanted them to make it, but it was just one of the worst stories I have ever seen. I know this is my opinion and I agree that people should be able to see what they want to see, but it makes me respect someone a bit less when they defend FSOG. I know she wasn't really defending it, but it just made me think of it. Great video and great comments!
Grace, you HIT HOME on the potential and unfortunate effects of Michael Keaton losing Best Actor on his future acting--not to mention awards--prospects.
Minghella is 35, De Luca is 49 and has been nominated for 3 Academy Awards. He has more experience and critical acclaim than she does. This isn't sexism, it's business. We don't live in a socialist country.
Thanks Grace!!! you are one of the first reviewers that is not ignoring Alejandro's speech !!!! I can't believe the others are just not even mentioning it !!!
My pleasure! I thought it was really important!
How To Train Your Dragon 2 >>>> Big Hero 6. That's all I have to say.
Amen.
So not true.
Tale of Princess Kaguya > How To Train Your Dragon 2 > Song of the Sea > Big Hero 6 > Boxtrolls
Best moments -
Eddie Redmayne's acceptance speech
J.K Simmons winning best supporting actor (as if that was a shock)
Patricia Arquette's acceptance speech
Glory performance (which reminded us why the Selma movie should have had more nominations)
Glory winning best original song
Lady Gaga's performance (good grief who knew she could sing like that)
Oh and the Oscar for most awkward creepiness goes to.....John Travolta.
I think the best animation win for Big Hero Six is just indicative of how the Academy still doesn't give a shit about animated films.
Best moments of the night:
Lady Gaga´s stellar performance.
These are all excellent ideas!
Those are great ideas, but I still like the long musical numbers. Perhaps an extension is in order.
Grace Randolph
I love how Neil said "If you're at an Oscar party with any of the guys who made The Lego Movie, this is the part of the show when you distract them." LOL and so true
Hey Grace,
I've been watching your videos for a few years now. I just wanted to thank you for all of your work and insight into the movie business. It's appreciated.
Hi Grace
I'm a fan of your channel, keep up the good work!
I think it would be a lot of fun! think about that ;)
thanks!
Love this! Great coverage!
Amen!
"I knew it was better than HTTYD2."
A lot of people disagree...The audience looked pissed that BH6 won... HTTYD2 got MORE claps than bh6...
Here are my best actor predictions for 2016 Oscars
Tom Hanks(Cold War Thriller)
Leonardo DiCaprio(The Revenant)
Bryan Cranston(Trumbo)
Michael Fassbender(Jobs/Macbeth)
Eddie Redmayne(The Danish Girl)
Bottom Five
George Clooney(Hail Cesar!)
Joaquin Phoenix(Woody Allen Project)
Jake Gyllenhaal(Southpaw)
Matthew McConaughey (Sea of Trees)
Andrew Garfield(Silence)
P.S:It would be awesome if Kurt Russell was nominated for the Hateful Eight
Hey Grace,
Any chance you will do a trailer review for Lazer team?
Grace your videos are always awesome
Thanks for your analysis. :)
Lady gaga's performance was just breath taking ❤️❤️
really great review.
I loved Jack Black's Into the Woods segment! Thats the first time he's made me laugh in a long time...
there are a ton of responses, but not sure if you all have addressed the fact that John Stephens and Lonnie Lynn are actually the gov't names of John Legend and Common.
They just announced a deal for the McDonald founder's movie, so that Oscar loss isn't hurting him now.
My biggest congratzzz goes out to JK Simmons!
Hope you get well soon Grace!
Really Grace, everything was awesome....your fav? Lady Gaga and most of all Glory was the highlight!
I have the opposite opinion of Big Hero 6. Its ideas are nothing special (a superhero origin story) but the execution was what made it great.
I think Fassbender is the new Daniel Day-Lewis, personally.
I agree that Birdman was better than Boyhood
Oscar date moved to early January? Sadly, the holidays are a busy time for me and my family, both before and after Christmas. Not much time to attend movies. So we use late January & February to catch up. Not fun seeing the Oscars if you haven't seen at least most of the films
The whole michael Keaton. Did you want to give michael Keaton because he deserves to win or it will help keatons career.
xXjamesLOVESgamesXx Tough call. I think he needed it for his career. As for the actual acting, I think it was a toss-up between him and Redmayne.
We'll see.
Wait, do you actually think they give the awards to the best person? Do you not understand how these awards shows work?
***** thank you. This is a recognition award. It is who was the best award
I think Whiplash should have won Screen Play
Grace, even if you don't think Big Hero 6 deserved the Oscar, you gotta give it some credit for accomplishing these things:
1. Finally giving an Oscar for a superhero film
2. Giving an Oscar to a racially diverse film
And many do actually like the film, so its not surprising the people that voted mostly liked BH6 (although I do doubt that really much, since they already confessed they didn't watch the majority of them.)
And GRACE: ONE QUESTION: DID YOU NOT HEAR THE ROCK CALLING ANIMATION A GENRE? CAUSE THAT ABSOLUTELY INFURIATED ME.
the only reasons big hero 6 won was because:
1: The Lego Movie wasn't nominated (the voters even said they were upset that wasn't on there)
2: that's the only movie they actually saw.
the only reason big hero 6 really became popular was because of baymax, the asian look, and the disney/marvel name. take those three things out, and what do you have? a boring, overdone superhero story with a message about death that the film really didnt need (i felt like it was there just for emotional appeal). big hero 6 absolutely did not deserve the oscar, and it's disgusting that it won.
Hero for Oscar
Dragon for Annie AND Globe
Lego for BAFTA
they're evenly divided and shouldnt be compared in terms of quality.
I think there were many surprise these year grace, except for 3 of the actors, but the rest were so close
This is the best oscar year for mer! Almost everything went just how i wanted it to. If only "Interstellar" had won for score, but i'll can live with that loss. "Birdman"
Big Hero 6 won Best Animated Feature, not HTTYD2????
ohh myyyy FUUUUUCKKKKKKK
One thing I learned from the Oscars last night was, for you to become the Best Actor/Actress, one must have a flop movie playing in theaters not a while ago. For that, I thank Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son. They made these actors won! :D
#justkidding
So so SO disappointed that HTTYD2 didn't win! It was so spectacular, and touching, that it definitely deserved the win!
The awards should be based solely on the work nominated, not past work (save that for the lifetime achievement award - speaking of which did they have one this year) or future potential.
also i believe that the oscar only choose the best animated base on the big studio so i doubt that they even saw those movies before nominated them.
I know with BH6 the villain and
the fact that
Takahashi (you know...spoiler)
Didn't sit well with you.
Did anyone else notice that the in memoriam section focused on Robin Williams for twice as long as anyone else featured?
Celebrities need to get their facts straight when it comes to activism. Specially with the "equal pay for women" speech. women already get equal pay in America.
What?
What?
If these celebrities want to do this they should take the time to actually talk about it.
at the 3:38 point of video
Grace or anybody did they mention shirley temple in the in memoriam because i didn't see her? Please reply i really like to know
Thanks for the nod, Grace.
Such a good point!
he was always a lock to take screenplay but director was a surprise
Glad you didn't back down when it came to Big Hero 6. I was really ticked when it got the award and honestly I don't consider the Oscars credible because of decisions like that.
I thought the Oscar show was fun and entertaining. It was the first Oscars that I have ever watched from start to finish and I am glad I did. Even though later the day I was in a zombie mode at school. (It aired in finland from 3.30 am to 7 am)
Glen Campbell, not Glen Ford!
Big Hero 6 totally deserved the win !
Why no best action movie awards ?
Because the Critics Choice Awards already do that.
I have to say I love big hero 6. I made me laugh so hard. There was one category you missed and that was the animated short which was feast.
I was really hoping American Sniper would get best picture, it was an amazing movie. Sad to see it get snubbed like that.
And Inarritu himself said he wasn't offended by Penn's remarks.
Alex Meyer
I did hear him say that and it may be true, but I do feel like, despite not being offended, it was that remark that prompted him to have something to say about immigration (however subconscious it was).
Keep Well.
Common's and John Legend's real names are Lonnie Lynn and John Stephens respectively so those were their names hahaha
I totally agree with you with Big Hero 6 I mean seriously I am so scared for Dreamworks now since I love that studio so much and Big Hero 6 yes was so poorly executed
And I love your review on the show too!
I actually liked Peabody and I don't mean to hate on it so much but Dreamworks needed this win much more than Disney
The company might close soon!!
thats true, but Ghibli needed it more. it already closed its door, their last 2 films flopped at the box office, and NO oscar win. Ghibli deserve it more.
Dreamworks can't make any deals and plus not a lot of people knew that film anyway
Everyone knew HTTYD 2 more
yea, DreamWorks cant make any deals, but it's because of one of their main flaws: lack of money making potential. all of their original films felt risky and many of them did not pay off.
so not a lot of people knew that film so we should just ignore it? while DreamWorks is still being considered as pop-cultured referenced, weak branded, inconsistent film qualities, and oversaturation of the medium, Ghibli Studio is regarded all over the world as the Disney of the East, King of Anime, Epitome of hand drawn, storytelling, and characterization of Japan.
and you want Kaguya, a superior movie to Dragon 2, to win the oscar because the studio is struggling and not because the film is good? because its more popular, so it should win, because no one cares about indie films anymore right? -__-
Haven't followed DDL's career, but did he have a "Jupiter Ascending" of his own?
As a potential filmmaker, 50 Shades of Grey upset me greatly. I know many people saw it and many people probably wanted them to make it, but it was just one of the worst stories I have ever seen. I know this is my opinion and I agree that people should be able to see what they want to see, but it makes me respect someone a bit less when they defend FSOG. I know she wasn't really defending it, but it just made me think of it. Great video and great comments!
I hated Big Hero 6. I completely agree that Disney drops the ball on execution. They waste so many good ideas.
u mark my words fifty shade of grey will be nominated next year
get better soon grace
Grace, you HIT HOME on the potential and unfortunate effects of Michael Keaton losing Best Actor on his future acting--not to mention awards--prospects.
He totally never though he was gonna win so much
I hope Grace gets better, but I wouldn't be mad if her voice stayed like this
The speeches and the major awards were the best part of the show (except for Michael Keaton losing, that was just sad).
Minghella is 35, De Luca is 49 and has been nominated for 3 Academy Awards. He has more experience and critical acclaim than she does. This isn't sexism, it's business. We don't live in a socialist country.
