    I appreciate you explaining how all of that works. I was somewhat concerned if it was a team driving thing for the duration of the training time. What you said cleared that up.

    Drivers need railings on their bunks....in the event of a sudden stop or collision or rollover....your body will be confined to the bunk area and not risk being ejected through the front window. I hope it never happens to anyone reading this message....but it should become an industry standard with the tractors...would save lives and decrease fatalities in accidents.

    I think it's so stupid that the mentor is not next to you when you drive. What if the student has a question or gets in a situation where he or she needs help. What are they supposed to do. yell to the sleeper," wake up, I need help" if that's how swift does things, it's wrong. Students are Green. They need the help while they drive.

    I have over 1.5 million safe driving miles in an 18 wheeler. But it was 10 years ago so basically it doesn't count. I am getting back into the industry so I will have to go with a mentor. I have Swift on my short list (2nd behind Maverick). I hate the fact that Swift pays the mentor for the student's miles also because that just encourages mentors to go team status asap to make more money. I think that team driving while training a student is a horrible way to do it. How can one train or be trained while the other is asleep? I have an extremely hard time sleeping in a moving truck, not because I don't trust the driver, but because of all the bouncing and moving around. I'll drive my 10 or 11 hours a day without issue if I am rested. Can a student request to NOT go team status while training?

      Lucky for sure, i was going in as a team so we had a lot of leverage and we picked the highest paying option, knowing what I know now though I'd have found a home every day trainer and looked for the same pay.. There are just so many companies out there.. I am at one now making around $1450 a week on a dedicated route where I know everyone and we have a good time and thats weekends off and home every night.. wouldnt do OTR again unless the pay was insane

    The pay incentives for mentors is way too high. the guy im with no hasn’t taught me a damn thing and does all the planning backing and important stuff ill need to know.. he’s just in it for the money and doesnt give a rats if I make it or not

    • @StephanHarz
      @StephanHarz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, somehow I did not see this message until now. Sorry to hear that and some mentors are like that but in all honesty the pay incentives are not as high as I think they should be. If you have a good mentor they end up working far more hours in a week than the clock with hands on training. I know I have been up and working with a student from driving, backing or paperwork an policy stuff for 20+ hours and some of that is unpaid unless we get the miles. So you have to try to balance out the on duty time working with a student and getting miles. They should have some hourly wage setup to help remove that rush rush/ run run feel.

Would the first week of training help me to achieve that goal so that I can receive my codling at the end of the course? Second question, are you put on the road immediately or is there class training first which allows new comers to get some cash for lunch the second week?

    • @StephanHarz

      With swift you will need to get the License worked out before they will fire you or send you to the school. The way it works is the first month [school] I dont know what happens but I think the food is on you but after that you have to do 200 hours the Mentor may help/work with you on the food part...with me the first week a student gets on my truck I help with food alot

      went to work for a small carrier last summer. boss gave us the option to take over equipment payments(he was getting a divourse). so now i got a 2019 VNL860 globetrotter with a cummins X15 and 10 speed eaten(all the pedals). my dedicated contracts looked a little low last fall but with current rates, its all gravy. drivers at Swift with 2-3 years are making about the same take-home money as me but i own my truck and i can always cash it in if need be. if you are still training i ask you to tell your rookies this : if you ever think about buying your own rig and leasing on somewhere you better understand TWO things. 1) know your cost per mile,day,and week . 2) understand that the carrier you leased onto with will keep their rigs running 1st, you are there to get the overflow.
      I have seen 3 owner/operators loose their rig in the last 4 weeks because they simply did not understand that.
      stay safe out there and enjoy the ride brother. @@StephanHarz

    • @StephanHarz
      @StephanHarz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have told them some of that. But that's why I wont do that. Way to much that can happen and cause you to lose from repair work to slow down in freight. I love that I can hit 10k a month and not have to worry about truck payments

    • @bobamericana3099
      @bobamericana3099 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      6 months ago i went way out on a limb. i refinanced this rig with just 9k in the bank. my business model allows for double payments plus a repair/preventive maintenance schedule/emergency repair account.
      tell your rookies that with a new rig , under warranty(like mine), you can walk away with 40-60 cents a mile ,if you know your operating costs. without getting into specifics regarding my interest rate and total balance due, i will simply state that my rig costs 1.06 a mile or 128 bucks a day sitting idle. that is before i even consider what i am paying myself.
      great ending to this story will be that the rig is paid off with an estimated 300k on the clock and will have a value of 55-60k.
      when you overhear owner operators boasting that they are getting rates at the moment of 2 bucks a mile or better, they are not telling you the percentage that the dispatch/load board brokers are keeping..its all hot air. right now most are getting around 1.50 per mile final cut.
      I signed dedicated contracts and eliminated brokers for 2/3 of my weekly run(home saterday evening till monday morn). i still eat crow for rates on monday but that pays the fuel to get to my dedicated start point. I get my 2800 miles a week.
      bottom line- if you do not have 25k in the bank or with lines of credit-you are running on luck.if you save cash for the slow season and base your model on 110k miles a year.it can still be done. if you have had enough after 2to 2.5 years, you can cash out and sell your rig.
      when i pay mine off. i am quitting OTR and will pull cartage out of the local rail yard. you get the idea. @@StephanHarz
