I believe the boot protectors are called gaiters
Or spats.
Cheers pal.
@@jonthetall1 Or puttee's
Wow, you got all 3 of the answers already, cheers!
greaves
So the foot things the Cadians are wearing are specifically gaiters. Gaiters go over the shoe/boot *and* have the pants leg tucked in. Spats just go over the shoe and are tucked under the pants leg. Puttees are a strip wrapped around like a gaiter.
Good to know thank you.
Your excitement for these minis really shows and it's contagious! I pre ordered 2 of these box sets and was having some doubts but after seeing the great job you do with these, I'm getting pumped to get them and paint them too!
Im jealous of your two box’s I’d love more already.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this. Just got this set and haven't tried to paint in over 20 years... this was a great help.
So happy to hear that pal.
I think this might be your best model. Really good result for a process this size
Aw that's really great to hear, I think it's my favourite model I've painted this year!
Cheers pal. I funnily feel the same. I love how he turned out.
These new shock troops are so cool, I have a box of the old ones and they're nice but these look like such a treat to paint. Great video as always :)
They really are. I still love the old once and have a bunch to paint and still plan on.
Yo, I'm so impressed with your upload speed. You are HUSTLIN' for it, my dude.
Appreciate all the hard work being noticed-cheers for that!
Gotta hustle lol n this game or you will fall between the cracks. Appreciate the support.
Love it! Thanks for the video! Can’t wait to see you tackle more Guard releases as they come out!
I shall be doing them all. And I can’t wait.
Loved the videos so much I just ordered the Cadia Stands box. Going to unashamedly copy your whole army scheme including the trench basing! Thanks.
Hahhahaha your comment made me happy pal. You will love it.
The foot and ankle coverings are gaiters. Many armies made use of them at varying times to keep debris and such out of soldiers boots.
A lovely job as always Andy. Keep up with these Guard videos and I may have to start collecting the buggers.
Thank you! They definitely need them with my muddy bases 😄
Haha there’s a few more tutorials on the way and I’ll be covering all of the new releases in the future too…just give in now 😂
The model looks so fun to work with. Awesome paint tips ❤
Cheers, really glad you enjoyed the video!
Fantastic color scheme! Thanks for sharing this very helpful tutorial.
Thanks so much for that, glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful!
Nice to really see up close with these minis as they get painted up. Scheme looks good.
Thanks pal
always a pleasure to see the videos 🙏🙏🙏
That’s great to hear, thank you! 🙌
Just started painting my first guard army and this video helped so much!
Really happy to hear that. And you have started the best army.
Awesome quick and effective scheme.
Thanks so much! 🙌
Another top job Andy. Well done.
Cheers pal. Appreciate all your support the last few months.
Love this tutorial! And your trench base tutorial as well! Already getting set to build the bases for my Cadians that way! Now to figure out if painting the body's separate from the guns works better for these new models!
Really happy you like them. The trench bases really do add somthing to the scheme.
Love this scheme, it’s inspiring me to find my old guard and get them painted
Aw love to hear them-get them done 🙌
Very nice. I am also loving painting these new cadians (and the death korps kill team).
There so nice.
as some have pointed out, the foot cover thing are called gaiters. they may also be puttees, not 100% sure on that and I do at times get the two mixed up but they are two very similar pieces of clothing.
Thanks pal.
The ones on the mini are Gaiters, Putties was a leg wrap, but used for the same reason.
@@sargesays5649 oh, that's the difference! thanks for letting me know :)
You’re the best painter Andy.
Oh stop 😄 thanks man 😊
Hey there sorry to bug but had another question, for the straps and Back pack and Gaiters, you used Wyldwood on those from contrast but no highlight on them unless I some how missed it. What would be a highlight I could do on. That color? Im using this as a base to do my cadian command squad so I want to take this scheme further. Thank you for the help sir
Catachan Flesh is what I used to layer over the Wyldwood!
@ awesome I have plenty of that thank you sir!!
Your videos are so helpful
Appreciate you pal.
This is fantastic!
Appreciate that pal.
The term you would be looking for would be greaves. Normally, leather or armoured fronts. Surrounding the lower leg.
Garters is just cloth over top of the boots. But as they as buttoned, the look like greaves to me.
Thank you pal.
You bring up a good point while layering. You're gonna be painting a lot of these guys if you're diving into the Guard. So you shouldn't spend tons of time highlighting them. You'll never get a finished army on the table if you go nuts on every single dude. Luckily Cadians look great with a simple and fast scheme.
Would love to see you take on Guard tanks in the future, maybe when the Dorn releases. Camo patterns always looked like something interesting to approach to me.
I will indeed be doing tanks including the dorn tank. I think it will be more of a solid green with some weathering like the sentinel I did that’s my plan anyway. Hope you still enjoy it.
Awesome stuff
Cheers pal.
Appreciate the quick look at the new Cadians. I saw your size comparison was relieved they are close. We always referred to leggings as spats, but not sure what the difference is between the two.
Thanks pal. And ye for sure glad there close.
Any chance for a list of the paints used ordered the box set will be doing exactly this to paint them up, as best "standard" cadian scheme I've seen, peace ✌️
Yeah I’ll add a list this evening for you!
@@MediocreHobbies thankyou will be much appreciated !
Done!
@@MediocreHobbies thanks for the list might have to wait for a lottery win before i can afford them though
I know this came out 2 years ago, so my comment is it pretty late, but i think technically the boot covers are called spats.
@@frankg9956 different names from different countries I think.
Incredible tutorial! If you were take it to the next step with edge highlights (for the new characters coming down the pipeline), what colors would you use? Thanks!
I guess you will have to wait and see when I do the character videos
@@MediocreHobbies fair enough! I’ll be here waiting. Keep up the excellent work!
Quick Follow Up Question: do you use the karake stone on every surface of the fatigues? Just not the deep recesses? It looked like you started out stippling it on, and then it turned into a smoother finish.
Thank you!
Those are gaiters, puttees are more of fabric wrapped around the lower leg/ankle, but both kind of do the same thing - keep mud out of the boot.
Is that all there for to try keep the boots clean? I thought they mite protect the ankle or something like that.
@@MediocreHobbies don't believe so. the puttees were really just cloth wraps. IIRC American Paras in WW2 were one of the first to do away with them and were allowed to blouse their fatigues over the boot tops. Those Cadian model gaiters look almost like a combo gaiter/shin guard to me, so maybe a little protection too.
Hi there I've been a fan for a while now and I picked up the Cadia stands box, I was wondering what highlights would go well for the green armor? Thank you!
Cheers for the support pal. And if I was to add an edge highlight it would probably be elysian green. Hope that helped.
A simple & fast paint scheme, right for a massive rank & file unit. These new minis are better proportionated that the older ones, the only problem being their price, now there are a lot of alternatives to GW, not all can afford their prices.
But they haven’t even told us how much the squad will cost.? I’m confused.
These boot- ankle covers are called spats or gaiters
Appreciate it pal.
Great Work
Thanks so much!
Cheers.
Great video as usual, and the mini looks awesome. But sadly I won't be getting any, I've been in the hobby since the beginning and I have a lot of minis now. To many to be honest with you and have been selling most of them and going over to small unit games.🙏😇🇺🇸
That’s fair. I understand that for sure. Appreciate the support from
Across the pond.
The models look awesome. Great paint job! But I thought Cadia has fallen 😞
Cadia will always stand.
The end result looks great... I'm just wondering if there is any value to using contrast paints, if you're just going to wash over it and layer on top of it anyway?
At all about speed. If you were to just use flat basecoats on the model and t would take a lot more time. I used contacts as a very easy and quick way to get my models to ten basecoats and washed stage.
@@MediocreHobbies I see, thank-you for the reply.
New upgrades coming out too .
Super excited for them!!
Half chaps or gaiters is what the boot things are called. Probably already answered but thought I'd put my 2 cents in. Love the paint scheme by the way!
Cheers pal.
Good video :) Any plans to do a starship troopers paint job on the new Cadians ?
I’ve done a starship troopers painting video before 😄 you should be able to use the same recipe th-cam.com/video/nzRBuUHQ96U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=V6qbT7IPtXffjyjM
Gaiters is correct. Also call Spats as well.
Cheers.
how do you add the decals without making them all glossy? i always did first a layer with lamian medium then the decal and then a layer of ardcoat. but you see a diffrence between the shoulder armour and the rest of the mini.
Your doing it backwards. It’s ardcoat decal and then lamian medium to get rid of the gloss. I also have a video doing transfers and I do it my own way.
@@MediocreHobbies Thank you :D
Hi I’m painting the command squad with these colors and technique. I had a couple of questions , they usually have a bit more detail like the box dude and medic, how would you deal with that or just keep it simple. Second I see you use a normal brush what do you do to be so accurate? Just did the aggaros dune layer and I couldn’t avoid missing and getting some on the armor :( advice?
A small layer brush is king for being carful. It’s got a big enough well to hold some contrast but a fine enough point not to go everywhere.
I have a video on how to paint the flag because that’s the most complicated part of the command squad. Everything else I would indeed keep simple. Metallics and normal colours. Hope that helped.
@Mediocre Hobbies oh I just tried a small base brush and it worked perfectly. I believe I had just one more question the green parts come a bit splotchy I see you layered a bit more with the green in those right
@@manoloochoa9199 yep indeed. Just go over any areas that are splotchy with another coat.
Did you go over all the aggaros dunes with your karak stone?
Coupd i use maybe agrax earthshade and zandri dust instead of seraphim sepia and karak stone?
You can of course but it will look different to this result!!
@@MediocreHobbies oh that is fine. Sadly i dont own the colors in question so i wanted to work with what i have. You did a stellar job by the way, your videos helped me on a lot of my painting projects
Great work! Any chance of seeing a size comparison between this guy and one of the old ones? I’ve got the box on pre order and I’m curious how they match up. Thanks!
I shall post a picture on my Instagram tomorrow showing the difference.
@@MediocreHobbies that would be great. Thank you!
The boot/trouser wraps are called putties, finally removed from British Army issue in the 80's
With an element of the old and bold demanding their return, along with the SLR
That’s interesting.
Those are gaiters. Puttees are what you would see on the Death Korps of Krieg minis.
Super simple and quick. I really want to buy the box but I think my wife would kill me 😂
What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her. ;-)
@@MediocreHobbies box arrives tomorrow
You sprayed them black and then grey or did you use the pot for the grey?
Both colours with a spray! The grey spray is just a light layer from above to show up light and shadow more!
Cool! Anyway, does the box say anything about their new lasgun? I mean the M1 or whatever WW2 rifle look-a-like.
There are so many different patterns of lassgun. They all have the same rules.
How did you get the creed camo on without it being so dark?
That just the colour of creed camo.
Hey I had a question on how you prime the minis for this tutorial. You start with and all over chaos black primer coat and then how heavy is the Grey Seer coat? Is it a light coat? Are you just trying to get the upper sufaces? Do you not do a lighter white scar coat on top?
Here's how and why I prime the way I do!
Two different rattle/spray cans are used-one full solid coat of Chaos Black, and a lighter coat of Grey Seer sprayed from above to add light/dark areas. The lighter coating of grey seer adds a small amount of grit(too small for the eye to see) from above to give the contrast paint a better surface to cling too. Contrast paints don’t work well on black primers, the colours won’t show up well.
Here’s a short showing the process, if you have any other questions please let me know!
th-cam.com/video/51Hx1uTmtSw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pqC1tehDhkaxQOwq
@@MediocreHobbies Thank you so much I get it, the Zenithal Priming is basically trying to mimic a Light source from the Direction you want it to so you focus on creating Shading gradations with the Grey Seer Spray and you just let the rest be dark and then use your Contrast paints. I have both Rattle cans for Chaos Black and Grey Seer and will give this a try tonight. Thank you sir for the help.
Ok, so ive been thinking about contrast paints wrong and pointless stripping them twice
I hated the patchiness of contrasts
Is that a positive reflection on the video. ?
@@MediocreHobbies yes, sorry. I was operating on no sleep. I've used contrast before, and never liked the finish and would never go on smooth with a brush. Great in airbrush though
Whats the size comparison between the new guard sculpts and the old ones ?
Just posted a comparison on twitter but will post it here tomorrow as well!
I shall post a picture side by side on my Instagram tomorrow.
couldn't buy aggaros dunes what different color can i use for that ?
Skeleton horde should do the trick.
@@MediocreHobbies Thank you for answering !
How do you Prime your minis for this paint scheme looks like white but not sure if you did a slapchop thing
Chaos Black and Grey Seer rattle cans, I have a video on how I prime on the channel 😊
@ thanks man appreciate the response i think I saw that in your Kasrkin video
if you can or someone who has experimented with this or speed paints. What speedpaints would you use for ultramarines in place of games workshops. I am going to be buying a lot of ultramarines, so need cheaper paint and longevity.
Emm I’m not sure to be honest. Sorry I couldn’t help more.
Andy!!! You keep getting sent so much new shit, and you've only got a small amount of subs?! How does that work!!! Are you going to finish all the Votann units?
I am indeed going to finish off all the votan units. And what do you mean? I guess they just like my video format.
I like your choise of colors. Such a good paintjob and video, but the turntable shots could be sharper in my oppinion.
I agree I just can’t get then lighting rite. I suck at that stuff.
Would this work with Genestealer cult fake cadians ?
Of course.
Boot protectors are called spats!
Cheers pal.
what did you use for the base?
Dark earth texture paste from Ak.
I’ve tried painting a few cadians now with all contrast like you and it’s just turning out terrible 😞 I think I just will never understand how to use contrast paints. Your layers are so smooth and mine are so blotchy.
I have a video on using contrast paints on the channel, check it out and see if it helps. Contrast paints need practice, you won't just get it right first time but it's worth learning.
I heard the boot things were called putties. The krieg have them and it fits with the ww1 thing they have. I always think cadian ls as more modern day soldiers
I agree they are more modern but I do love the look of them.
Gaiters for water proofing ont the boots
Ah for keeping water out. That makes sense.
Do you think your contrasts or anything? Or have you just gotten good practice
I don't thin them no! I've definitely gotten a lot of practice and I think I'm braver with them than people trying them out-use more than you think you'll need, take away the excess when it starts to pool, and work in sections, like wrapping a full leg. A lot of people try to use too little paint and drag it around which makes it look patchy
@@MediocreHobbies gotcha!! My first venture into minis with the Cadia stands box I did just that! Bu I will definitely give it another go
funny thing about that miniature, they give him a canteen. I dont know if the average cadian lives long enough to get thirsty. just saying.

Too old school for contrast me. It looks too much like cheating lol
