I've had the floor stand model of this fan for 3 years and couldn't stand the thick layer of dust that had accumulated. Thank you so much for posting such an easy how to for this fan. I use it for months on end during the hot season in Texas (which is most of the year 😆). It really keeps me from hitting the down arrow on the thermostat.

I could not get the blade cap for the life of me. Wouldn’t unscrew. Finally just cleaned it. But thanks for the video. My VFAN pedestal looks as good as new.
Perfect thank you. On the last slot I kept the grill lower inside the fan and then it was easier to press down on the hook with the screwdriver and then move the grill up into the slot rather than down.

You can totally unscrew the 3 bolts on the back and take the whole back section off -which is a lot easier in my opinion! (And your way less likely to scratch your fan) I used a 2.5 Allen wrench. No prying needed!
@@lizboz no problem! It’s easy to miss, they look like they’ve been welded because of the washers. Cleaned my fan yesterday, feels so good when it’s clean!

thinking of buying one of these to replace an older 533 model and this was reassuring for how relatively easy it is to clean. Also I know it's not the point of the video but you have really attractive hands and forearms ^_^'

Nice video, I've had my VFAN for quite some time, mine is the first version, which only has four blades and they are much deeper pitched, much like the bakelite blades of the original Vornado fans. I bought mine years ago at Best Buy. I know they say the ball bearings do not need to be lubricated, but I've had to lube mine once, because apparently the bearing seals, at least on these first ones weren't very good. I occasionally work on old electric mixers, so I used the same lube that I use on electric mixers to repack the bearings in the VFAN. You'll know if you need to re-lube the thing, it makes it kind of weird noise that resonates through the whole housing. most people may not have that issue, though, my fan is my bedside fan, and I never turn it off except to clean it, so it runs continuously for the most part.
Never knew how easily the front came off to get to the fan blade which also comes easily off, crazy I was about to throw it out and never buy one again lol Thanks
Thanks for the vid. I have two "modern" vornados - this one, and a Jr, and one original from 1949. The grille in the original 1949 model was so much easier to remove than these! I may just undo the back 3 bolts and remove the motor and blades as a whole from the body instead of popping the grill.. vornado kinda messed up the grill on these re-issues, imo. On the original you just gently pushed down on the top "leg" of the grill, and the grill itself would deform and slip out of the hole. No screwdriver needed.
Shame about the plastic fan blades but least it won't rust. I like the hunter Rockefeller desk fan and Vornado swan fan as i want to buy one but can't get them in the UK i just like the art deco vintage metal fan style
I've never seen or tested a Sr. model, I don't know. The difference between volumes must not be that great in that it's the same style fan, probably just a bigger airflow capacity. You'd have to go to a store near you that has those fans and compare the two.
I have all three sizes (can't afford to run an air conditioner). The medium size fan is in my bedroom and the Sr. is in my living room. I got the Jr. first for the bedroom but wanted something stronger, and the medium is just perfect for that room. The Sr. is rather loud when it's on high, but I hardly ever need it turned up that far (and if it does get that hot, believe me, I don't mind the noise very much!). Even on 1 or 2, I find it has quite a bit more cooling power than the medium sized fan does. I love the look of these fans, and now thanks to this video I have a better idea of how to clean them.
I'm going to assume that Vornado instructs it's owners to NOT remove the motor cover for cleaning purposes, wipe down the cover and vacuum the ventilation holes but leave the cover intact, which is pretty much what the people from XPOWER said to me when I inquired about cleaning one of their air circulators. They don't trust us....shame on them.
Starting a How-To video with your prejudice of Vornado fans "made in China" is UNnecesary. I, too, want America to produce more products locally. Voice your complaint to the manufacturer OR buy only "Made in America" products!
No, I'm not gonna go through all the unnecessary time and trouble to make a video on disassembling the entire fan part for part to clean it to perfection, that's not what this video is about. The point of this video was to show how to remove the cover and fan blades on these newer Vornado fans, to then clean the inside of them, or oil the motor, which many people have requested me to demonstrate. You want to take the hassle to make a video on taking apart and putting back together every single part of the fan? Go ahead. Yeah, didn't think so.....
@@lizboz I have one of the older versions of the Vfan that Vornado made around 10 years ago. There's no clear way to get the blade off the shaft. I tugged with all my might and that thing isn't going anywhere. At some point these re-releases added the end cap to make it easier. Any idea how to get the blade off?
Not a good idea to tug that hard, these have only a certain amount of durability. Some of those have a set screw(s) somewhere on the blade. You'd have to look and see what type of bit it takes, but it should be a more common bit that you'll probably have laying around your home. If that's not the case with yours, perhaps the blade may be stuck on the motor shaft. I suppose you could try shooting a little bit of penetrating oil where the shaft meets the blade, if you have any. Then see if the blade will just slide right off. Let me know how it goes!
BTW, scratch that about the penetrating oil. My mistake. That's more for rust removing than really anything else. Hopefully though my other advice should help at least some, if not entirely.
lizboz I never found any visible screws. Its still in good working order. The next time it needs cleaning I can dive a bit deeper and just strip it to see what’s going on.

Great video! I would use a compressor or a compressed air canister instead to avoid damaging the fan.

Definitely if you want a good standing fan. The base is very heavy duty. The whole fan is heavy and stable. That is what the extra cost is paying for.
