I use the thumb hack to centre myself, instead of slowing my heart rate it slows down my mind, and allows me to focus on two simple things, those being: blowing air on my thumb and feeling the air on my thumb.
The blowing thumb thing works for me. It's like a thing I can do distract myself and my heartbeat slows down.
