At first I was worried Rebecca would get mad that Ted wasn’t standing up for himself and for Richmond, but I like that Keely sent her a message and helped her remember what was important
Ted's response reframed Nate from edgy to mean-spirited. This exposed Nate's blindspot, Ted. Nate fully expected a response in kind from Ted forgetting that his former boss wasn't that kind of guy. If he'd paid attention the results would have been obvious.
Well this is the same way how Rebecca came to see her ex-husband Rupert. She initially fell for him due to his brutal honesty which turned out to be mean-spirited.
Not just a classic example, but a *killer* example: this isn't *just* taking the high road, or turning the other cheek, but it's showing up the other side by SHOWING that you're actually better than them, without any bitterness, resentment, or actual intent to even show them up. It's amazing. You couldn't do it deliberately, you just actually have to be that good a person.
This is a perfect call back to the Darts scene. Nate's need for validation causes him to lash out at his former team (and by proxy, his former self- as seen by the mirror spitting). His insecurity makes him judgemental. Ted responds by acknowledging how little he actually knows. How dumb he USED to be, framed as a joke on misconceptions of which he has since been corrected. Secure in his values, Ted allows himself to be curious, which in turn allows himself to be wrong. Through this trial and error, through being curious, Ted continues to grow. And that confidence, true self confidence, is reflected by the reporters response. They can't help but love Ted, where Nate only manages to command the room when he lashes out and says something sensational and cruel.
Well, Ted is obviously way more mature, but (and I'm not trying to justify Nate here by any means) to be fair, he *is* also older, more experienced, and has a different background than Nate as well.
I love how the press conferences have evolved. In the beginning they were small with a handful of cynical reporters but now the room is packed, including several TV cameras. Even if Ted isn’t the best coach, the press knows they can rely on him for a good quote or story
A detail I absolutely adore is how personable Ted is with the reporters. For example, how he's able to recall Marcus and congratulated him on the new gig at the Independent. It's perfect for his character and goes to further contrast Ted from other typical coaches.
@@ZarkowsWorld That's part of it, but it's also more of WE know who used to write for The Independent. I love that juxtaposed to that Roy just calls the new guy from The Independent "New Trent". But he takes the edge off by saying he likes him better than Old Trent.
Awww nate’s having the classic reaction of a bully not getting the satisfaction of making his quarry feel small. Ted’s an example for how to defeat pettiness all over the place. They only win if they hurt you. It’s a hard skill to learn but it’s so worthwhile.
It's kinda like that scene from _Tombstone_ where Ringo is so proud at how adeptly he can do tricks twirling his hand gun to try and intimidate Doc, and then Doc deflates him with his response, twirling his drinking cup in the same manner, highlighting the silliness of the exercise.
I remember watching this with my Aunt, and she said something I thought was very profound. When it cuts to Nate watching Ted completely flip the script on him all she had to say about it was “He’s better than you….” Which to me truly sums it up perfectly. Nate may be a great coach, but Ted has proven time and time again that he is a better man then Nate could ever hope to be.
I remember when I was a kid, when someone made a joke on my expense I would rage. When I was a young man and at real work for the first time and someone make jokes at my expense, I slowed down and accepted it and poke at myself, followed by the situation. In return, we all started to joke around each other. I had to learn how to take a joke just enought not be be self depcriating. Sometimes, you got to go with the flow.
Nate just wants to be liked. He is jealous of Ted because Ted is liked. And that's ironic because Ted doesn't desperately want to be liked. He just is.

Ted responded in one of the best ways possible. His opponent poked fun at him in a mean spirited way, any response would have to be extremely well thought out to be effective and even then, Nate probably would have had a comeback to the comeback. So what did Ted do? When Nate poked fun at him, he walked right over next to him wrapped him in a side hug, and pointed and laughed right with him with even better zingers. Almost nothing out there unnerves an opponent as much as that does
I think Ted's even a better coach than Nate, he's a tactician and probably good at it but his ego issues and selfishness aren't good enough to be a head coach. Ted instead is an amazing speaker and motivator and humble, smart and caring.
This time I've had the same feeling as the first time. What a risky movement is the "I'm so dumb..." thing. It looks like he will just take blame for everything, but Ted writing is so great that we see again a great spirit in him, to laugh about himself without judgement. Yeah, we're all dumb sometimes and that is fine. I love how this show just teaches things about living and about ourselves while talking about football. This combination makes it unbeatable.
Take the sting out of the wasp by making it a joke. A boxer will hurt themself when they take a big swing and they miss. The lack of impact weirdly hurts.
i honestly really hope nate doesn't get a real redemption. i know the whole show is about progressing as a person and becomnig the best you that you can be, but nate really has been rotten since the start. yes he starts out getting bullied by a twat but he ends up being the exact same person that would bully the younger version of himself. he was given every opportunity to grow and he never did past his own resentment, and i don't want his redemption to come in the form of returning to richmond, i want him to end up coaching some 9th division local team with about 20 regular supporters to get some humility, because his ego needs it
A question from across the Atlantic: was there ever a major scandal involving professional cricket? Ted's reference to the movie Field of Dreams put a thought into my head. Field of Dreams was based upon the members of the Chicago White Sox - infamously known as the "...Black Sox..." - who became involved with gamblers / organized crime and purposely lost the 1919 World Series. It's an interesting movie if you care to check it out but doesn't really resonate oversees. However... if somewhere in history there was an infamous team of cricketeers that might want to seek redemption after death, that might make for an interesting reimagining of the movie. Between us, though, I found Field of Dreams to be interesting, but slow. IMO, too many of Kevin Costner's movies would have gone from bad-to-good, or even good-to-great, by editing nearly every scene to quicken their paces.
There is an entire Wikipedia section that's just cricket scandals. There is a lot of spot betting in cricket which is far more easy to manipulate than the outcome of a whole game. In cricket the same ball is used during an entire game so ball tampering scandals are a also big deal.
The infamous sandpaper scandal that involved the Australian captain v South Africa was a terrible thing for a number of reasons. It reflected badly on our country for many years and the aftermath for the players involved was not as conclusive as it should have been. I don't think they will be making a redemption movie about this sorry chapter.
