    I used the footage from Kai to remaster the scene when Gohan turns Super Saiyan 2 for the first time against Cell because I really liked the Japanese song that was playing which unfortunately, was not included in the dubbed version.
    Although the Dragonball Kai version was different I had to edit the whole thing including the music but I think I did an okay job. Enjoy! One of my favorite scenes from DBZ.

    Reasons why this scene is better in Japanese dub:
    1. Gohan doesn't have an inner monologue here, it's just his silence that is way better than in the English dub
    2. The soundtrack
    3. The scream is better in this scene
    4. Oozaru's roar made it 10x better

      What about the emotional silence as Gohan stares at the remains of the friend that he lost because of his own inhibitions and unwillingness to fight? Gohan's silence just before he snaps was more tragic and moving and spoke volumes more than the unnecessary monologue that made it into the dub >.>

    This is a very well written scene. The symbolizm the bird, that Gohan's innocence go away, later the moment when a line goes through the screen, Gohans hair flinch and the background turns into red, which represents anger and the scream with the ozaru roar is spectactular. And when Gohan's last teardrops are flying into the air, it shows us how strong is Gohan. Than the tears go away and nothing lefts just anger. Perfect!

    • @faytesaurelius350

      Yeah. Enough is enough. At that time, no more pacifism. When talking with mouth is useless, let the fists do the talking.
      Just let it be free. Keeping your anger suppressed won't make it disappear. It will only make you explode, and once you explode, the end result will be much worse: you will no longer see who's the enemy nor ally. You will direct it to everyone in sight, no matter who

      I like both versions. I like the Falcouner "Gohan Anger Theme" better, but I didn't like the internal monologue. I like how the japanese version focuses more on matching the animation with the music and not force feeding you what Gohan is thinking about. But overall, one of my favorite scenes in anime. Another one that comes close to me is (MINOR SPOILERS)

    This song makes it feel like it was a long time coming, a conflict within Gohan, he's a peaceful child but also has Saiyan DNA where he has a desire to fight and his bloodlust quenched. The tears for me sells the whole scene, it shows Gohan's inner conflict as a person. He broke through and obtain a power never seen before.

    • @WildWeavile
      @WildWeavile 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No gohan doesn't like fighting, infact he says during this fight that he doesn't enjoy fighting like goku does and doesn't have the desire to kill anyone.
      However that ends once Cell basically kills the innocent android 16, who was just like Gohan himself, forced into a conflict that had nothing to do with him (in 16's case, it was to kill Goku as Gero's Revenge for goku killing his family) so Gohan could relate to him (because Gohan is being forced to fight cell despite him not liking fighting) despite 16 days ago being a soulless barely emotionless monster.
      So when he dies and cell merely snarks at his death, he gets so pissed that he loses all sense of innocence hence why the birds fade into black representing that his childhood was over.

    3 reasons why this is epic
    1- The silence from Gohan before he explodes. The inner monologue from the dub just ruined the scene when you compare it to the sub.
    2- The song playing in the background.
    3- The Oozaru/Great Ape roar as he powers up.

      @@Down_the_Wind you do research. Dbz was indeed one of the first anime series to do this. These types of tropes were popularized by dragonball. You can argue that Hokuto no ken did it first but that still makes dbz "one of" the first along with it.

      @@kaystruenoo dont need to because you obviously forgot about a fighting anime called “Tiger Mask” that was out in 1969. Dragon Ball Z was influenced by that in ways. Hell, you can even throw Saint Seiya into it.

    This is by far the best version of this scene. The American dub fills the calm section before he snaps with gohan having an inner dialogue where he says he can feel it slipping yet here all you need is the visual metaphor of the bird and then his calm breaking and the power coming out. Amazing.

  • @matthewnelson9868

    There are just so many amazing elements to this scene that make it perfect. It is my favorite moment like this in anime. Gohan still looks like a boy before the transformation but looks more like a man after. The way the tears are under his eyes, and eventually he dries them off and looks very serious, once again it shows he changed from a scared boy that is crying to a young man that literally has the responsibility of the entire world on his shoulders and is ready to take care of business. I prefer the Falcouner music, but overall I like this original version more without the monologue despite the cheesey music, the way the animation goes along with the song boosts the overall experience for me, and has a stronger emotional impact while the tears are rolling from his cheeks and they are chanting the same line in the song as it fades out. Just really good moment.

      @Teamstar-dh9hg 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is that a good thing? The build-up helped improve the scene, adding hype and suspense while also letting you see what Gohan was thinking, making you feel sorry for the poor guy. The dub sends you through a flurry of emotions, while this simply skips all of that. And while the scene is still amazingly well done, it doesn't come close to how good the dub version was. Plus, the dubs music fits in better for this scene. At least, in my opinion.

    • @AegisKHAOS
      @AegisKHAOS 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Team3star 4119 And I say it's the original that puts me through the emotions and developed the scene well while the dub ruined it for me. Forget the bgm, it was the added monologue that made the difference. You say it explains Gohan's thoughts, I say not only was it unnecessary since we can already see him cracking at the seams with our very own eyes, it weakens it since he is supposed to be so angry he can't think straight, thus the silence. And then there's that scream. Original voice makes me think 'Cell is dead', the dub makes me think 'lay off the smokes'.
