I had a devil of a time getting the splines to line up. Tugged at it for about 40 minutes. Then it hit me! I put the bike in gear so the drive shaft spline wouldn't move. Put the wheel in place and turned it a bit and it went right on. Thanks for the informative video!!
I have an 86 Virago 700 that I've owned for over 13 years. Other than the cc size it's pretty much the same bike. Nice helpful video.. just wanted to add a couple of tips. Before you put the wheel back on.. you should clean the splines and pack them with grease. (Automotive grease is fine.. the kind you would pack wheel bearings with) Doing this reduces the splines wear to a minimum, allows for easier installation of the wheel, and helps keep the center hub sealed and protected from debris. Also, from experience, the center stand on it's own will give enough clearance for tire removal if you remove the license plate, angle the tire a bit after dismounting from the splines, and just lift up gently on the rear fender as you slide the wheel out.. same goes for back in. Mine come out with only centerstand used. 96 Virago xv1100 special. Also found it easier to mate spline by pulling rim on left side of bike instead of pushing on right side. Love these bikes and appreciate how clean your is. Enjoy...!!!!!!!
Thank you for this information. At the moment I am rebuilding my Virago XV 700 into a XV 750 and the drive shaft was giving me some concerns. Thanks to this video some of my problems are now solved.
Another way to raise the rear of the bike: Put the bike on the center stand. Get two short (about 6" long) pieces of 2X4. With the bike on the center stand, tilt the bike to one side, have a friend insert one piece of 2X4 under the raised side of the center stand. Then tilt the bike back the other way onto the 2X4 until your friend can put the other piece of 2X4 under that side of the center stand. Should be enough clearance to remove the rear wheel...............worked for me

The drive shaft assy on the shifter side has gear oil in it. Check to see if it still has oil in it. If not, add some gear oil. You may want to pull the rear wheel and take a look around if it continues to leak.
Very helpful video, thanks for doing this. Have you ever thought about doing another video on the removal of the swingarm? I need to remove mine to strip and repaint it as it has a fair bit of surface rust, but I don't know what to look out for.

I just replaced the tires on my 82 Virago 750 and no video shows how to mark where to tighten the right side when remounting. On yours its right almost at the edge of the axle bar when you start, I didn't mark or take photos and now I'm worried I might be off and can't find anything on what the spacing should be on that side :(
I got plenty of clearance while the bike was on the center stand by removing the front wheel and tipping the bike forward a little while supported by a floor jack.
My axle pin seems to have fused with the brake assembly cover(possibly the whole brake assembly) and it will notbudge with me giving a good hammering session. I could try a torch but I'm afraid to damage important parts like the swingarm which looks like it's made out of aluminum or some sort. Any advice?
Is it possible to install the wheel with the male and female splines not lined up. I just took my virago 1100 to a mechanic to get the rear tire changed, and after he install the wheel, now there's noise coming from the driveshaft and wheel where it meets the drive shaft. Sounds like a tapping , as if something is hitting the walls of the driveshaft or if there's binding. It happens when the bike is in gear while on the center stand and wheel moving without any acceleration. It does it in all the gears, and it's louder in 5th gear. Any ideas? Thanks
If no tools/fulcrums/levers were available, (& an air pump was) would deflating the tire allow enough clearance to pull out from under bike? (re-inflate upon assembly)
I recently noticed an oil leak coming from the axle shaft, or so it appears. This is my first motorcycle and I do not know a lot about them, are there seals in there and oil that need replaced? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to add.....be sure and tie down the front brake lever to lock the front brakes when using this method
