- A new chapter in film comparisons, I look at the differences between Kodak Tri-X as our standard and Ilford Kentmere 100. All films in these comparisons were shot using the same lighting and position, developed in Kodak D-76 using the manufacturer’s recommended time, and printed on Ilford Classic FB at 11x14 size using the same contrast settings. The printing time varied to cancel any changes in film base fog from film to film. I included the H&D curves for each film to see the individual differences and we look at the overall print, the spectral response of each film, and the grain characteristics.

Kentmere100 is my #1 favourite film; probably the best value for money.
Same. I don't always want to shoot at 100, but when I can I find it to be amazing value. Some of my best looking prints were from K100.
Being made by Ilford it would be interesting to compare to their FP4. ( FP4 @ GBP 5.42 Kentmere @ 4.17 )
I really must try Kentmere films, especially as I live about 30 miles from the factory.
Having never explored Kentmere 100, I am surprised and impressed with its superb tonal separation. As a trade off against Tri-X, it is slightly less grainy and sharper, but not what you'd expect for the speed difference. I really wish it was available in 120 roll format. Got to love that nearly ruler straight density curve.
It is available in 120, Rollei RPX 100 is the same emulsion but in medium format.

Just in time, as I bought a dozen rolls to test as my new everyday film. And it seems that Kentmere 100 is promising on this regard.
And people complained about Fomapan 200 grain size, this is 100iso film and has the same grain size as trix400.
It's definitely a good film for being a budget option. Definitely punching above it's weight class here, I think the take home here is drop a third on your exposure and knock off a little bit of the highlight bloom, if you could call it that... Seems to have a very good sensitivity. Maybe shoot it as a 125 speed? Or not. I interpret it as being slightly less moody than tri-x. Would be good for a party situation as opposed to an art statement... Just my 2 cents! Excellent video as always!

Kentmere 100 has become my favorite, all-purpose film. Such a great value film. I always thought it looked sort of similar to the results I got with Tri-X and I'm glad to see my observations weren't incorrect. My favorite results with this film is pushed to 200. Adds just a little more contrast, still looks good, and one stop slower than Tri-X or HP5+ isn't a big deal to me. I've even pushed it to 400 and got decent results, though maybe a bit too contrast-y for some purposes. In my opinion and experience, this is a much more versatile film than Kentmere 400.
I'd love to see how the Arista EDU films stack up. Are they in the lineup?
Do you think raising the iso would compensate for the highlights?
Kentmere 100 is my go-to B&W film. It's cheap as dirt, and in my own very non-scientific tests, I've found it to be very similar to Ilford Delta 100.
Is Kentmere 100 actually the same film as the new AgfaPhoto APX100 (made in UK)? It would be great to know. Thanks a lot
It is almost certain that they are the same. both films have exact same development times and both film emulsions even have the same color.
From what I understand Kentmere is identical to Ilfords regular films, but with a lower silver content which allows it to be cheaper

What about Ferrania P30? I saw their Kickstarter campain back in the days where they tried to save that old Italian film factory. I was a little bit on the budget that time so I had not enough money to step in. Couple days back I remembered about it and searched how are they doing. Maybe I was lucky I had not money to support them. It seems only small production was released into market and not every Kickstarter campain supporter obtained his film to these days. They claim on their website they work on another bulk of film, but it looks the project actually didn't make it and they are not far from shut it all down. Notwithstanding the P30 is nowhere to buy, Freestyle Photo shows they have it in stock. Interested?
I looked onto your videos and found out you did Ferrania P30 two years ago. Sorry, my mistake.
I live in Italy and P30 has been available at random times from one of the main two Italian retailers at least for the last year, even if the company itself has been really quiet until last week, when they announced they'll be able to deliver film continuously unlike before.
I kind of like the look of P30, but it's really moody and dark, definitely not an all-purpose film: with the right subject and lighting you can get awesome results, with others just a terrible dark mess.
I love this film so much. It’s so good and so cheap. Bulk rolling feels like stealing
