( can’t forget the ketchup!) Little bit of back story , it came during recession times in Quebec where households did not have a lot to work with so they pickled and marinated stuff before it went bad , shepherds pie was a staple cheap food so it just naturally was served together to fill up the meal.
but why do the Quebecois call it Pate Chinois? What aspect of this dish is Chinese? Please explain to me the origins of this name because I'm unaware as to why they call it Pate Chinois in Quebec...
@@Dewan0529 According to one theory, this dish originated in the town of South China, in the American state of Maine, where many French Canadians had emigrated, due to lack of work in Quebec, during the years of the industrial revolution (end of the 19th century). From then on, “China pie”, a local specialty, would have become, after translation, «pâté chinois». Some theories suggest that pâté chinois originated in the late 19th century during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, where Asian workers were said to be fed inexpensive and readily available ingredients like ground beef, potatoes, and corn. However, it appears that Chinese workers primarily ate rice and soy during that period, which would prove this theory wrong. The South China theory seems to be the most probable but there is still no definitive answer.
I think it comes from a meal that was invented in the USA (Main). It was called China pie because it comes from a city call China in Main but was inspired by the Shepperd pie. Some french canadian worker brought back this recepie and it was eventually translated Pâté chinois@@Dewan0529

Shepherd's pie is a savory dish that originated in Ireland and northern England in the early 1800s. It's a casserole made with minced meat, gravy, vegetables, and mashed potatoes, topped with mashed potatoes, and baked until the mashed potatoes are browned. The meat is usually lamb, but can also be beef. The dish is also known as cottage pie, and some cookbooks distinguish between Irish and Scottish versions. No vinegar tangy
