If you are a music legend, like Madonna is, you should make sure your voice is in good shape and you have a killer performance whenever you appear on a big event. It could happen, but it makes me wonder what made it this...rough. I believe it's suppressed to tune to the nearest semi-tone (for example, a note sang between C and C#, but closer to C, would be tuned down to C). So for it to sound THIS bad? She had to be quite a ways off OR like mentioned above, was slightly flat when singing the note and the auto tune tuned it even flatter... She has also used auto tune and vocoders in live performances in the past and did fine there. So I feel that there was something wrong with either the equipment or her voice.

I'm a very long-term Madonna fan too Georgina and I have to agree with you 100%. Obviously, I don't know what Madonna does or does not do in her private life, but the vocal performance doesn't give me the impression of someone who practices much nowadays. She's always been 'potentially' a bit ropey if she turns up to sing live between tour cycles, and then improves - often really quite significantly - for the tours themselves. But this was a car crash. If a singer is a vocal athlete, this is someone who isn't putting the hours on the track, so to speak. This is a shame because she *can* sound amazing live, though you wouldn't know it listening to this. It didn't help that there were 26 performances before this (and several more if you count the other interludes) where - like the songs or not - the singers all pretty much achieved what they wanted to vocally. If Madonna is honest with herself, she'll recognise that her vocals let her down badly; in fact, her people effectively already have by the fact that the version of this on the Madonna TH-cam channel has a different vocal performance (either from rehearsals or cleaned up) on it. I agree again with the staging not being ideal - going down the stairs while singing live is hard enough. Doing so while having a long robe to tuck up to avoid a Brit Awards style massive fall is another level of hard. But, doing so *also* with an eyepatch on which reduces her vision is bordering on crazy. You can see her eye is fixed on the steps as she's going down, she's obviously not comfortable at all. That's super-inhibitory for a singer in a live performance. I also agree that her breath control isn't right as well. Without wishing to sound rude, she's not quite as in shape as she normally is when she tours (she normally transforms into a machine-like lean creature, sometimes bordering on the too thin), and that plus all the heavy getup she's wearing and the requirement probably has made things worse. As everyone's lung capacity decreases the further they get from about 20, she has to reach this level of fitness again if she's going to do the kind of performance where she moves as well as singing. Otherwise, it will have to be just the standard stand-at-the-microphone (not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, but it's not typically Madonna to do so). Like you, I'm not feeling this Madame X theme either, in terms of the styling or the indeed the music choices.

Hi, I’m from the Netherlands and the reason Madonna was at the Eurovision, was because she was asked to perform on this stage by the Eurovision. She got 1 million dollars for this.... the reason why they asked her is because the contest recently invited a ‘big star’ which was a huge success (more views) and decided to do this again. But the results (for one million dollars) were disappointing...... O, and I’m so proud. After 44 years The Netherlands won the Eurovision Song Contest. Our Duncan won! So... no, it wasnt because of a comeback. I’m not saying there is no comeback, but for this stage, she was asked (and I’m afraid will never be asked again🤭) Edit: The steps/stairs/decor came from herself
Totally agree w/ the choreography going down the steps While Singing! Years ago, I was out of the country doing a show. Our choreographer was staging my set. Everything was clicking along just fine, Until, he wanted me to Start walking down the top level stairs upstage, all the way downstage, While Singing In The Stratosphere High Power Notes And Sustaining Them... Well, After Explaining , Listening And Witnessing (In person ), the Problems Which Do arise from such ill Place choreography, he agreed with me and All was good.... I’m the singer/performer, & I Know what’s best for my vocal performances. Having to walk up/down Stairs or Dance(OMG!) While Singing, is Difficult, it makes our Vocals Shaky! I Think 🤔 Some choreographers don’t always understand Singers , b/c choreographers are Dancers, Usually Not singers of any kind.

I love u and your channel so much and I say this with all the respect and love in my heart... I agree this is not her best performance, but people are DESTROYING her for ONE not-incredible performance (not shocking for a Veteran Pop Artist, unfortunately). She's been recording her new studio album and most def is still finishing some stuff, so elementary she's overworking her voice. Here, she sounds very much like her vocal cords are swollen from overuse. If you sing, you know there are days that your voice SIMPLY DOES NOT RESPOND the way it should. You send the same usual "signals" to your muscles but the sound just doesn't come off as intended... sometimes it has a reason like bad night sleep, oversinging, sinus issues, nodules, jetlag... and sometimes it just is what it is and you gotta do the best with what you got. Or lipsync. And be bashed. Or sing live "not-100%". And be bashed. Complicated situation... I honestly hear a mix of """bad""" vocal day + unflattering mixing/eq/volume adjust of her microphone + the backing track was also not properly mixed + a bit of an unsettling "too Satanic" vibes from the outfits, color scheme, stage structure, etc. All this combined evokes a negative experience on the watcher, it's not just "MADONNA SUCKS AND NEEDS TO BE CANCELED" like all those kids are throwing around the internet, not knowing 3% of this woman's GENIUS art lol. Is it possible the auto-tune tuning the wrong key? An experienced singer would know how to handle this situation.
It could happen, but it makes me wonder what made it this...rough. I believe it's suppressed to tune to the nearest semi-tone (for example, a note sang between C and C#, but closer to C, would be tuned down to C). So for it to sound THIS bad? She had to be quite a ways off OR like mentioned above, was slightly flat when singing the note and the auto tune tuned it even flatter...
She has also used auto tune and vocoders in live performances in the past and did fine there. So I feel that there was something wrong with either the equipment or her voice.

I'm a very long-term Madonna fan too Georgina and I have to agree with you 100%.
Obviously, I don't know what Madonna does or does not do in her private life, but the vocal performance doesn't give me the impression of someone who practices much nowadays. She's always been 'potentially' a bit ropey if she turns up to sing live between tour cycles, and then improves - often really quite significantly - for the tours themselves. But this was a car crash. If a singer is a vocal athlete, this is someone who isn't putting the hours on the track, so to speak. This is a shame because she *can* sound amazing live, though you wouldn't know it listening to this. It didn't help that there were 26 performances before this (and several more if you count the other interludes) where - like the songs or not - the singers all pretty much achieved what they wanted to vocally. If Madonna is honest with herself, she'll recognise that her vocals let her down badly; in fact, her people effectively already have by the fact that the version of this on the Madonna TH-cam channel has a different vocal performance (either from rehearsals or cleaned up) on it.
I agree again with the staging not being ideal - going down the stairs while singing live is hard enough. Doing so while having a long robe to tuck up to avoid a Brit Awards style massive fall is another level of hard. But, doing so *also* with an eyepatch on which reduces her vision is bordering on crazy. You can see her eye is fixed on the steps as she's going down, she's obviously not comfortable at all. That's super-inhibitory for a singer in a live performance.
I also agree that her breath control isn't right as well. Without wishing to sound rude, she's not quite as in shape as she normally is when she tours (she normally transforms into a machine-like lean creature, sometimes bordering on the too thin), and that plus all the heavy getup she's wearing and the requirement probably has made things worse. As everyone's lung capacity decreases the further they get from about 20, she has to reach this level of fitness again if she's going to do the kind of performance where she moves as well as singing. Otherwise, it will have to be just the standard stand-at-the-microphone (not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, but it's not typically Madonna to do so).
Like you, I'm not feeling this Madame X theme either, in terms of the styling or the indeed the music choices.
I am so glad to read such a well thought through argument, moreover, expressed so concisely and politely. It's a very meaningful voice much needed in this debate on her Eurovision performance.

the reason why they asked her is because the contest recently invited a ‘big star’ which was a huge success (more views) and decided to do this again. But the results (for one million dollars) were disappointing......

Totally agree w/ the choreography going down the steps While Singing! Years ago, I was out of the country doing a show. Our choreographer was staging my set. Everything was clicking along just fine, Until, he wanted me to Start walking down the top level stairs upstage, all the way downstage, While Singing In The Stratosphere High Power Notes And Sustaining Them... Well, After Explaining , Listening And Witnessing (In person ), the Problems Which Do arise from such ill Place choreography, he agreed with me and All was good.... I’m the singer/performer, & I Know what’s best for my vocal performances. Having to walk up/down Stairs or Dance(OMG!) While Singing, is Difficult, it makes our Vocals Shaky! I Think 🤔 Some choreographers don’t always understand Singers , b/c choreographers are Dancers, Usually Not singers of any kind.

The lo-fi mix of the music really highlighted her lacklustre vocals here, Like a Prayer usually has a quite an up-tempo production.

I thought of Tina Turner, too without having watched this video before. I mean I saw Tina live on her 24/7 Tour nineteen years ago in Hannover Germany, where she was 60 already like Madonna today and Tina killed it on stage! Amazing performance. I saw Madonna live 7 times since the Drowned World Tour, but the Eurovision was a meltdown. Was she serious about this performance and rehearsing that one for four, I mean 4 (!!!) days??? If you sing, you know there are days that your voice SIMPLY DOES NOT RESPOND the way it should. You send the same usual "signals" to your muscles but the sound just doesn't come off as intended... sometimes it has a reason like bad night sleep, oversinging, sinus issues, nodules, jetlag... and sometimes it just is what it is and you gotta do the best with what you got. Or lipsync. And be bashed. Or sing live "not-100%". And be bashed. Complicated situation...
I honestly hear a mix of """bad""" vocal day + unflattering mixing/eq/volume adjust of her microphone + the backing track was also not properly mixed + a bit of an unsettling "too Satanic" vibes from the outfits, color scheme, stage structure, etc.
All this combined evokes a negative experience on the watcher, it's not just "MADONNA SUCKS AND NEEDS TO BE CANCELED" like all those kids are throwing around the internet, not knowing 3% of this woman's GENIUS art lol.
