Thanks for the demonstration, now I understand DBX. You have a beautiful machine.

I almost always use DBX when using my X-2000R. Without DBX in most cases the audio play almost sounds harsh. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for the proper demonstration of the DBX noise reduction capabilities.

Back in the day I had a compact cassette deck that could use dbx and the difference was amazing. After hearing that I purchased a car deck that could playback with dbx. This was before CD and the results were great.

    Hello. I have the version X-2000M. 2 Track 7 1/2 and 15IPS. I have calibrated for 320nWb/m. Great machine.

That is a great machine. I have not been able to find one, but I would happily trade.
Also it is admirable that you have succeeded to up the level to 320. I'm surprised the pots would go that far!

The service manual lists 370nWb/m as the standard flux level. This would even be acceptable for the version I have (X-2000M) at 15IPS with a modern tape, but not for the R (low speed) version. I needed to make a small modification to the circuit so that the VU reading was the same in source and tape.

It had to be a standard however they where too late, i think that preserves the format better/longer.

Hello. Thank you for this demonstration. I run mainly reel to reel music along with records in my system. I don't have a reel to reel deck with DBX . I want to have an add on dbx unit to record and play back. Am thinking of getting a 3bx DS unit. In your opinion will this be a good fit for recording and playing back on reel to reels? I have a Teac A-6300. A Crown 725 and many other reel to reel tape decks.

That seems to be an audio enhancement unit that enhances the sound in all kinds of artificial ways. Has nothing to do with the dbx in this video. If you want to buy an external unit that does what this deck does, get a dbx 150.

wow, the DBX compression really makes a huge difference. I can't detect any tape hiss whatsoever when it is engaged. Btw, the X2000R is an excellent machine. Do you still have it?

@@PhilipvanderMatten Hi Philip now i have listening with headphones and now i have understand the dbx thing ;-) I have an ask from your other video "servicing N4520 mechanical" have you made part 2 with the electrical adjustments ? please I have also the maschine an N4520 and N4522 half track. The N4520 is working perfect. By the N4522 i have a Problem with the winding speed. I hope you understand me my English is not so good :-) I will try to explain. The forward Winding Speed is ok . But when I try to REW the Tape at the end the Speed at begining fast an normal but in the middle the Speed is slower and slower and it will stops.
If i pull down the left tension roller the speed comes faster and faster. The time to >>Rewind a full Tape can be 5 minutes and more if i not pull down the tension roller. Have you an Idea what this could be ? I have made no adjustments. The only i have do is build in a new Wickel-Motor. Have you a few tips what i could do ? Many thanks :-)

Owned an early , 1975, DBX 119, Compander, and I didn't like it. I could hear it working which was really annoying

    • @PhilipvanderMatten
      @PhilipvanderMatten  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Maybe because it was an external unit? And the deck wasn't properly set up maybe. If the combination is not working, the result will be bad.

@@PhilipvanderMatten I bought the unit, their second iteration, the first being the DBX 117, in the summer of 1975.The unit was totally discrete, and an external unit. It had variable expansion and compression ratios plus variable gain. To get any real hiss reduction on a Teac 360S, Cassette deck, the unit could be heard as, " Breathing", increasing/decreasing hiss. The 360S was biased for TDK SA tape. I upgraded to a Teac 2300 SD reel deck with Dolby B, onboard, biased for Scotch 206/207 and Ampex Grandmaster 456 tape. Didn't require the DBX, to achieve good performance. Then I purchased a Revox B 77 with no noise reduction and at 15 or 7 ips there was no discernable noise present. The B 77 was biased for the Grandmaster tape. The B 77 was used to archive albums and I was very pleased with its performance. I've not heard the DBX, IC version on a reel deck, but with all compansion ratios set by the IC, it must sound very clean. Currently to copy CDs from various Libraries for free, I playback through the digital out of a Philips/Magnavox CDB 650 to the digital input of a Tascam CDRW 700 CD recorder. I employ an Audio Note Kit DAC as a playback DAC, and am pleased.
