I get more compliments when I just wear a vest then when I wear a jacket and vest, or just a jacket. It’s my favorite look and for me it’s way more comfortable then adding my jacket.
4:23 It is in fact, okay to button your bottom button of your waist coat. Unlike a suit jacket it is not considered a fashion faux pas to button the bottom button of a waist coat, though you can opt to leave it unbuttoned (as most people do).
Yes you can, people just dont really do it because it kinda seems "wrong" even tho its not, in my opinion its one of those "just because you can doesnt mean you should" type of thing. But again each to its own

I luv vests and their stylish nature. Have a few as I own a few suits, but i've never rocked any of them on their own as i just hadn't gotten the style down previously to do so. But i'm working on it and this video was helpful about the recommended light shirt color or while. Was glad to have watched this video.
is the adjustment strap supposed to hang in the back of the vest or is there some way to make it look better?

I’ve seen that done and it looks good. Go with a more casual vest though.
If you wear it with jeans then you can’t beat also wearing a newsboy cap.

I really appreciate that you made this video about one of my favourite fashion accessories. I own approximately 6 different waistcoats (we dont call them vests here in the UK :) I have had them all made for me bespoke by a local tailor. They fit like a glove, not too tight not too baggy and the shoulders are slim and paired with the right shirt, can be worn either dressed up or dressed down. I wear them with chino’s I wear them with jeans. I enjoy wearing them with a tie, or with the collar unbuttoned. They are in several different materials, silk, cotton, mohair, moleskin. They add texture and elevate my look above my peers when we are out but i am equally comfortable to wear when out on my own. I get so many compliments about them.

John, please solve a mystery for me. I love vests, and I'm quite aware one shouldn't button the bottom button on a vest or a suit coat, but I wonder why that is. Frankly, to me the unbuttoned bottom button look whispers I forgot to finish getting dressed, so if I'm not supposed to button it, why do designers/sewers put one there at all? Thanks for your thoughts.
It goes back to King Henry where he got too fat to button his jacket completely so everyone else, to remain respectful, started doing the same thing.
I disagree with this rule. I wear a lot of vests. Love them. I unbutton the bottom button when I sit down as it prevents the fabric from getting a fold in it. But when I’m standing and walking about I button it because it looks neater especially if you’re wearing it with or part of a three piece suit.

Now it's wintertime here in Belgium and when going out I'm wearing a vest (waistcoat) under my wintercoat... When entering somewhere I can simply take off that coat and SHINE !!! ...'cause a Vest brings Sunshine all around 🎉🎉❤😂!!!!

I wear vests somewhat regularly. I'd advise caution with a white shirt/vest. Unless you've stepped up the style on the vest, it's easy to look like a black jack dealer or a waiter.

I find that if the inside shirt collar has some detail, like Burberry for example, the white is not as stark and nobody will ask you for an order of flaming cheese.

John I always wear a vest with a suit, most of the time when I'm out and about, u notice a lot of guys don't use a vest, and also I'll occasionally wear a vest causally. Thanks for another great video 👍

You can button the bottom button, but its not historically correct, but again, you can its not a fashion crime or something, people just dont really do it
American western style works with patterns and can host darker shirts. Solid content.

HI John Great vid . I tend to wear waistcoats in conjunction with sports jackets and denims or chinos . So, quite what we call smart casual in the UK . The most versatile colours I would recommend is camel/beige brown and a maroon . These 2 waistcoats tend to go with most of my jackets

for 1) in my opinion wearing a vest with the same front and back pattern is prefferable because it stands on it's own better. When the front and back don't match (example: a silk back and cotton front) it seems like there is a jacket that goes along with it.

Did you know why men must never fasten the bottom button of a waistcoat/vest? Later in his life Queen Victoria's eldest son, the Prince of Wales, later King Edward the Seventh, aka "Bertie", put on a lot of weight from his 12 course dinners etc, and had trouble buttoning-up his waistcoats, so left the botton undone. As a result the men of the court would do the same out of respect to him, and it became a fashion statement for men of all classes which holds true more than 100 years later.
When he was young the Prince/King's waist was 28 inches and eventually he was 48 inches! No gyms in those days, huh? Even getting on a horse was a struggle for him. The best the King could manage was a gentle round of golf or shooting a few birds!

@@40OverFashion I'm a storehouse of trivia. Waistcoats were originally worn in the late 1600s and were sleeveless full-length coats worn under men's outer jackets. They'd be heavy and elaborate back then.

On unbuttoning the bottom button of a vest... it’s never been mandatory for one to do so. It started with King Edward VII. He got to fat for his suits, and was simply unable to button the bottom button. Naturally, imitation is the sincerest for of flattery. So folks at court began doing the same thing. Soon spread throughout the western world. These days, some vests are fitted and made to leave the bottom button undone. Most you might find off the rack fit better if done up all the way.
