Hey great video as always! I noticed that the first pattern actually repeats rhythmically and it restarts after the 8th (4/4) bar! You can arrange them like this: 4 3 4 4 6 2 4 4 6 2 4 4 2 4 3 4 4 6 2 4 4 6 2 4 4 2
Oof nice, I even looked specifically for this sort of thing (because I caught something like this in "Paradoxical Spiral," second video in this series) and didn't catch it. Good eye!
Also, speaking of things I missed: Adriann Imoel pointed out to me in an email that I missed a couple details about the "droning" riff-the bends mess a little bit with my pitch interpretation (though it's all still seconds and/or thirds), and the pattern of switching between the two bass notes gets broken at one point in the recording and I played that wrong in the video. My humblest apologies, and thank you everyone for the insights!
this album is the peak of the mid-career Meshuggah sound and I think it holds up way better than all of their previous material and most of the following records. it's almost psychedellic in it's minimalism
I know this isn't metal music, but autechre seems to take a very similar approach on their more abstract albums. Lots of almost patterns with constraints on what can and cannot appear. It's a neat way to make something hypnotic without being repetitive.
This is the thing with meshuggah. Everyone mentions holdsworth, Metallica and Rush as influences for meshuggah and they are correct, but no one ever catches in interviews when they mention Autechre and Squarepusher. To me electronic music is their biggest influence. It explains their love of composition using the computer, it explains thr hypnotic way they play riffs for long periods of times, and it explains the compositional method (especially on their newer shit) of taking one idea and just manipulating it 3 or 4 times to create an entire song.
This series has given such incredible insight to this album, and as a result it's moved catch 33 from an album I kinda enjoy to my second favorite meshuggah album
Maaaan, that Meshuggah arrangement for marching band is turning out incredible. I can't wait to hear it performed! Speaking of it, any performances of Meshuggah content by any non-metal bands would sound fantastic. I must now search for it!
My favorite riff in the entire album is the one on IDID immediately before the outro (the chaotic version of the sort of "barber-pole" ascending riff right before it, but with alternating octaves. its simple-ish to grasp on guitar, but hearing it its like if pure insanity was a tornado and you're getting pulled up into it)... basically, holy shit, pls pls pls don't leave this unfinished! Can't wait to hear more.
I've said this since I heard the album in highschool (2007 maybe?) but this is the best, or "most," Meshuggah album and arguably one of the best albums in metal as a whole.
I am such a huge fan of your channel! I love Meshuggah so much and to be able to watch you dissect these compositions that I think about and over analyze all the time is so satisfying. I learn a new thing and hear a Meshuggah song differently every time I hear it. It’s so dense with rhythmic and tonal variety.
This is the album I pull out when I get invited somewhere I don't want to be. I walk in the door and say "sorry I'm late, a good song was on and I wanted to finish listening to it".
lol what 50 seconds ago, seriously?! ^^ Just rewatched the 2019 live at summerbreeze of these guys Goddamn are they incredible, so happy to have seen them live already... edit: omg a shirt I already know the band of!!!1111
Both the twisty and the repetitive riff floor me every time. The mind bending riff they follow just bottles up all the energy so you can appreciate the exceptional release even more.
Great as always. Wondering if you’ll ever cover contradictions collapse era material. I actually did a cover of one of those songs on my channel. Anyway This one is my favorite song off of the album.
A wierd thing about the "Repetitive Riff" is that in the third repetition they hold on to the lower (G#) note a little bit longer, so the last repetition starts with G# but only for one note. Meshuggah just can't keep themselves from being "too repetitive"
Yeah I remember noticing this and then I forgot about it when I went to record it-and exactly, it's like they get uncomfortable with doing the same thing for too long and throw some wrench in!
Ever listened to the part in the middle of "Nosferatu Man" by Slint where the repeating guitar part is 27 eighth notes long and the drums are in 6? Not metal, but I bet was an inspiration for some of the artier, mathier metal bands.
Slint is from my town. They were THE main inspiration for math rock and inspired many of the bands that predated Mathcore too (in the og metalcore sphere so think botch, coalesce, deadguy, etc
@@metalmusictheory5401 oh man i'm so excited! by the way I am a student of christopher buchenholz at hunter and he told me about you once he realized how much I love metal music. I actually knew about your channel as I'm also passionate about decoding meshuggah rhythms.
to even try to explain it is insanity......thank you for your time, skill, understanding,patience........what guitar u sing and pedal order? can we use meshuggah counting instead of notes? i cant read music but with your system of pattens, i think i can finally break free and make something vaguely poorly similar

That entire instrumental section, my favorite part of the album.
how is this dude such a badass? he knows exactly which riffs are the hardest holy fuck

I love Autechre

Name more bands please!
My favorite Meshuggah song ever. Fuck yes. It's such a ambitious and epic track.
Imagine naming the most otherworldly and hypnotic passage in their entire discography just 'repetitive riff' 😑 .. 😃
This series has given such incredible insight to this album, and as a result it's moved catch 33 from an album I kinda enjoy to my second favorite meshuggah album
It's their best album by far in my opinion, the best album of this millennium!
That's funny. This is the album that got me into meshuggah whereas a lot of people say this was the hardest album for them to enjoy
I've been banging the Catch 33 is their best album drum for years. It's an absolute masterpiece that I feel is often overlooked.

@@metalmusictheory5401 No I have not! Thank you so much for the link!
Im pretty sure there's a video of like a percussion ensemble performing "bleed" somewhere out there
@@yellowsaurus4895 I saw one of Straws Pulled at Random, amazing
@@Maldito011316 that might be the one im thinking of actually
Great Video! Super informative and well explained. I love the added humor as well.
Found it. Only person who breaks down that riff in IDID
The twisty riff is like a more psychedelic variation of the beautiful riff from the outro of Straws Pulled At Random.
Gah, i love this album. So dynamic and powerful
Great job as always, sick shirt too! Only one week left to go boys and girl!
I've said this since I heard the album in highschool (2007 maybe?) but this is the best, or "most," Meshuggah album and arguably one of the best albums in metal as a whole.
Bro I love this fucking album...every year that goes by the more I think k it might be tied for first for me

Such an underrated channel!!!! Good video

You rule. Thanks so much as I didn't see ANY other people trying to describe that first section. Learning it on bass has been difficult.

I used to put this on at local bars that had a bring a playlist thing on Monday. Ha. Everyone would clear out. Lol

Another great one! And that bendy riff is a favorite of mine too.
Thank you for the amazing videos!
"...it has enough disruptions that it doesn't quite work"
🤣 How can you write music like that? That's incredible!
2:53 This is very similar to run length encoding, very interesting approach
Any idea when the next one is coming? This series is so good I really hope you get to finish it.
Both the twisty and the repetitive riff floor me every time. The mind bending riff they follow just bottles up all the energy so you can appreciate the exceptional release even more.
Most difficult riff of the album? Bro thats the hardest riff I ever saw
Best meshuggah song

Love that album, definitely will eventually (though it might be a while, gotta finish Catch 33, want to do something from the new album, etc.)
