- Pieter Grabijn has run his own autobody repair shop for almost 30 years. There aren’t many types of vehicles he doesn’t know how to repair, but his true passion is for classic Volkswagens. His passion must be infectious because his wife and all three of his three kids roll around in a classic VW. In this episode of Handcrafted, we watch Pieter and his son begin the restoration of the rare and collectible 1964 Karmann Ghia Type 34, focusing on the repair of the rusted left fender.

Don’t end this here, I’d love to see the entire restoration! It’s so refreshing to watch someone with proper skills and no “made up shop drama for tv garbage” in a shop restoring cars. There should be a series showcasing people like Pieter but from all over the planet who do this work. Imagine one build from Mexico/America showcasing the intricate work that goes into painting low riders, then another jumping to Japan showing the build of a Shakotan style car, jump to America for a kit car etc etc. I’d love to see how each culture from around the world does car builds. No made up drama, just people with a passion for cars who restore or build something special.
It is a very calming and great way to do restorations, no glitz, no drama. Plain simple craftwork!
There was only 4 ever sold new here in Ireland. One is currently in France getting restored, one lives in Wexford and another lives around the Dublin area. I’m not sure where the last one is

My friend bought one freshly imported from Germany. We both worked on it to get up to good standard. I'll never forget driving it to the not shop. I have never driven a car that got so much so much attention before or since. It was amazing.
Can't help but feel somebody somewhere in a TopGear TH-cam channel meeting said "have you seen Richard is doing stuff about restoring old cars now? we should do that too"
The Karman Ghia is stunning, the colour combo really brings essence to that era.

I think when you see these old cars being taken apart you see how “unsafe” they are compared to modern cars. I can’t imagine the crumple zones on this car after a crash.
That being said, I love the simplicity of old automobiles. And I also love this series. Excellent craftsmanship all round. So satisfying to watch.
In old Volvo's they actually advertised that the crumple zone was the OTHER CAR!
They didn't crumple and the other car did, they we so solidly built.

Is it just me wondering why he went to all that trouble repairing the head light surround beautifully and then leaving all that rust on the head light bucket without treating it?
Yes I would have at least put some boiled linseed oil that would neutralized the surface rust
