Dame Thora Hird, Dora Bryan, Eric Sykes, Elspeth Gray, Victoria Wood and her ensemble.....does it get any better than that? RIP the first five aforementioned.
My favourite episode of 'Dinnerladies'. Lovely to see Thora Hird, Dora Bryan and Eric Sykes in all their comedic glory. Beyond sad that Victoria Wood has died. an incalculable loss. May she rest in peace.
That little scene with Twink's mother is so wonderfully written. In one second we find out that Twink is a home carer, as well as a worker, so all her shenanigans - coming in late, hungover, having random sex with strangers - suddenly have a huge, pathos-ridden context. It's the kind of writing only Victoria Wood could have done.
Maxine Peake is an extraordinary actress too! (Her Doll Tearsheet in The Hollow Crown is awesome!) Can I ask, are you British? Can you tell me if Twink's mother Bev has a scouse accent? I'm American, and I'm trying to get better at recognizing the various regional accents. Thanks!
@@michaelocyoung Thanks! I'll take that as a good sign. I've only seen her in this single episode, but it's clear she's also a gifted actress. It's hard to say that in this episode when there is so much talent everywhere. She made me love her from her first lines. That caught me off-guard too, because I assumed someone like Twink might have absent parents. But it fits that all her self-confidence comes from love. ♥
Hello, I’m new to the Dinnerladies fan club. My best friend that I love more than myself got me to watching this a few weeks ago and I love it. I have always been a big fan of “Are You Being Served” and ‘’’Allo ‘Allo” and of course Benny Hill so it looks like I have a new one now at almost 54 years old. Lol 😂
Have watched episodes several times over the years, always good. Quality upload of great show series. Love watching these talented actors that had great writers & direction. Thanks for the smiles!
@@belmarmom right. But even Victoria Wood didn’t write Thora Hirds withering look whilst sitting in a wheelchair. Not many actresses could pull that off!
Totally agree with Meir - Thora Hird's cameo is a work of art! She stole the show in All Creatures Great and Small, Heartbeat, In Loving Memory, and Talking Heads.
"How many o'levels did you fail?" That always makes me roar with laughter 😂😂. The stars were aligned in comedy world when she wrote this show. So many brilliant lines and observations. I never tire of watching it.
My BEST FRIEND sent me a link this past Friday to Dinnerladies and I fell in love with it/them. I wasn’t as well versed in British comedy as I thought I was. Lol
Eric Sykes, Dora Bryant, Thora Hird and Victoria Wood really make me laugh in this episode i am crying with laughter. 4 great legends up in heaven having fun together.
This episode aired in December 1998, 21 years ago, and in Bren's 'rant' over the tuna 'n sweetcorn she mentions 'rain forests coming down, polar ice caps melting and people living in cardboard boxes' ..... ahead of her time or do some things never change?
@@knitnkitten Silent Spring was published in 1962 (it shocks me how long negative effects of modern practices have been known about yet ignored). @Simon Bampton The 90s were when environmental issues became regular fare for discussion and news programs, but they'd been growing in the public awareness, as little.kitten wrote. People have been living in cardboard boxes and raw wood shipping crates since such containers came into existence. The only question has been, what percentage of the population is in them. So, Bren was simply addressing ongoing current events of the time.
A cast to die for. I saw Dora Bryan in "Hello Dolly" when I was a small boy at Leeds and was mesmerised by her singing and dancing talents. In those days people like her held the audience in the palms of their hands, and her comic timing was masterly. The only other time I witnessed such skill was Barry Humphries as Edna Everage (also at Leeds). Victoria Woods' script is a masterclass in writing; Yorkshire comics delight in the "daft" and her scripts are chock full of it. Anne Reid's description of an aunt buttering a coaster at a wedding, thinking it was crispbread, is a typical Woods image, as is a pelvic floor like a bulldog clip. Woods is sorely missed in these days of boring, tedious comedy writing.
I'm american. Just begun discovering Victoria Wood. I love this show. It's addictive. Victor is some kind of a genius, isn't she? I''m eager to watch everything she's done. Thanks for posting. Love from Ginny in San Diego, CA
Ginny Lorenz If you haven't seen/heard the Ballad of Barry and Freda then you must do so immediately. Try to find an early edition, where she's playing the piano.
+QueenofSnarks Thanks. I have, indeed, seen at least two of her performances of The Ballad of Barry and Freda. But I shall look for more. She's got it all, musically. Those lyrics PLUS beautiful and evocative melodies. Amazing. And she seems such a genuine, good person.
I'm new to her as well and it's a breath of fresh air and growing up in Midwest here in Kansas city. .I grew up on British comedy thanks to kcpl and I have been captive. Favorite being are you being served!
I've just realised that this wasn't the first time Dora Bryan played Anne Reid's nymphomaniac mother in a scene written by Victoria Wood. The first time was in 'Mr Right', a spoof documentary shown on Victoria Wood As Seen On TV.
Thora Hird - rolls in on a wheelchair, rolls her eyes a few times, and somehow comes across as queen of all she surveys. She can sit there, saying only a few words, and completely dominate the scene with subtleties.
Some cracking lines from the elder actors in particular and a great classic comedy cast of Thora Hird, Dora Bryan and Eric Sykes. Only thing I don't like about it and the other episodes, is the fact Tony is still shown as smoking despite the cancer and chemo. Perhaps Victoria Wood was trying to make a statement or something and I'm just not getting it.
wearecity I think maybe you're reading too much into it. Its never mentioned, and it's never raised in any of the interviews she's ever done, and it's not in her tradition to make 'social comments' so obviously....
I agree, toxigenic. I think we've all known or seen people with cancer who continue to smoke. To them it can be like a connection to life - their life before cancer, an ordinary pleasure in a world of imminent death. It's also a really funny device for Tony to escape from uncomfortable situations. "Come on if you think you're hard enough. Periods." "Ha ha ha. Three weeks late." "Bren, you sort it out. I'm having a fag."
I just looked up Fatima Whitbread :O There must be a lot of stuff they can't say in Wikipedia... relating to infusion of exogenous androgen agonists, for example? Well, I can see why Anita is so upset anyway, but I can't see why Jane thought it would be a nice thing to say to her. Did Fatima have a popular following in 1988?
She was one of Britain’s top athletes so, yeah she was a well-known person. I think the comparison was because Fatima Whitbread had great big 80’s perm at one time and Anita’s new hairstyle was a bit of a throwback. Jane may or may not have meant it as a backhanded compliment.
