The struggle is real, isn't it? I keep telling myself that after this module, things will be easier, and they never are 🙈 But I'm mid-way through my masters now so I guess I can hang in there some more, and I know it's all worth it.
I do appreciate a lot that you are talking about this, it's a reality that we don't discuss enough online.

Thank you for this and I agree - we definitely need to talk about it more ✊

I find it sooo hard to focus on anything in the summer - roll on October! Hope your work space is in the shade and the heat isn't zapping your energy too much at this busy time for you. Thank you for this vlog, so helpful and insightful

I really like your honesty, positivity, along with your love -- genuine love -- for your research! It appears that many of our research interests intersects --like text and image connection and translation -- even though I am a phd candidate working on finishing dissertation in intellectual and legal history of ideas ......... Keep up the great work as you have rare light and I am glad to see you are letting it shine "friend" ...... wish you and your family all the best and have a nice weekend!

Thank you so so much! This is such a lovely and kind comment and your PhD research sounds absolutely fascinating! It definitely sounds like we have a lot of common interests :) I hope I’ll get an opportunity to read your work

The intensity of study is an important part of the Oxford experience. Unfortunately distance students miss out on the total immersion experience (e.g. meals in college on a daily basis; afternoons or evenings at the Union; or otherwise mixing with students working in other fields of study). It is the intense daily pressure that turns carbon into diamonds, or more to the point converts information into knowledge, and hopefully knowledge into wisdom.

Thank you for this - I totally agree I love the intensity of the studying and I wish I could take full advantage of the in student experience. I plan on my making time at the residency week totally about this 😁

@@cait_murphyhurrellwhen I first came up to Oxford many decades ago one of my first tutors described a tutorial as “distance learning face to face”. Plus ca change.

My programme director keeps saying that pressure turns carbon into diamonds, but as one of my professors says, it mostly turns it into coal 🙈

I hope it wasn’t too negative in retrospect but I do think it’s important to show the rough sides of it all too

@cait_murphyhurrell Absolutely not. I don't regret working alongside my PhD, it's the only way I can fo it, but I think it is good to show that it isn't easy so if others are thinking about going back to school while still working can make that decision with both eyes open. It's very hard but worthwhile, for sure!

It's completely normal to feel unbalanced sometimes. The academic path is full of ups and downs, so you can try to see it as some kind of future training, when you're finally embarking on your PhD and beyond. I'm doing my PhD full time while also freelancing and some weeks I can't even do half of what I had planned... It's really frustrating but also part of the process. Enjoy your time in Oxford, no matter what! 🥰

@@cait_murphyhurrell It's going well, thank you! I'm finishing my second year, so there are a lot of things that need to be done before the summer break. Hopefully by then I can have a finished draft of a paper that needs to be published so I can continue with more analysis! Thank you for asking ☺

Thank you for being so honest in a space where there's so much talk of "hustle" and "grind"! I'm currently trying to balance prep for an Oxford residential program (the History, Politics & Society summer school) alongside a full time job and there's no way all the reading or all of the email get done. Oh well, some skimming is fine, right?

    • @cait_murphyhurrell
      @cait_murphyhurrell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think it’s so important to be honest about it all too - the good and the bad. Oh what fun! I attended the Literature Summer School two years ago and it was transformative! I hope you have the best time! When is the summer school happening?
Don’t beat yourself up about the readings - I don’t think anyone gets all of it done. Just do a couple of ones that you’re really interested in and enjoy the experience 😊 skimming is absolutely fine haha

@@cait_murphyhurrell We start in two days, so I'm glad to know that I probably won't be alone in having indulged in a bit of skimming!
Amazing that the Literature Summer School was part of your path back to academia; your journey to the MLA while working a corporate job is inspiring! I'm hoping to use the HPS School as a way to test pursuing further study. Thank you for showing that it is possible and joyful!

Could you do a piece about your heritage, how you ended up where you are. If you haven’t done it already.

Of course! I’d be happy to share: basically a mixture of Irish (majority), English, and Lebanese heritage and born and raised in South Africa. I worked and lived in New Zealand too for a while ☺️

I hope you are not going to do a PhD alongside full time Google work lol I know you already have support from Accepted Society but I am happy to send you my PhD proposal if you need extra examples. Mine is in history though. What is your proposed topic on if you are happy to share?

Haha no definitely couldn’t manage working at Google and doing a PhD - I will continue to work but hopefully with more flexibility. That’s so kind to offer Nicole and I would appreciate any extra help I could get! If you wouldn’t mind emailing me, my email is in the description box. Thank you so so much for being here 😊
