Steven Adler Hated by all "GNR" Members Because Of Their Behavior, The Problem is Axl Rose?

  • Steven Adler was born Michael Coletti in Cleveland Ohio to an Italian American father Michael Coletti, and a Jewish American mother Deanna. After his father left the family, his mother moved with her children to Los Angeles California, Adler was originally named after his father at birth, but his mother renamed him Steven when she returned to her parents because Jewish naming conventions forbid naming children after living relatives. He took his mother's surname after she married Melvin Adler, who adopted her two oldest children, He has one older brother Kenny and a younger half brother Jamie. Adler grew up in the San Fernando Valley until the age of 13 when he was sent to live with his grandparents in Hollywood due to his bad behavior. While attending Bancroft Junior High School Adler befriended Saul Hudson later known as Slash, they met when Adler had a skateboarding accident and Slash stopped to help him. After ninth grade Adler returned to his parents house in the Valley for the remainder of high school during which time he learned to play drums. After his return to Hollywood in 1983 Adler auditioned for Sunset Strip staple London, When the audition proved unsuccessful he formed the band Road Crew named after the Motörhead song The Road Crew with his childhood friend Slash. They placed an advertisement in a newspaper looking for a bassist and received a response from Duff McKagan. They auditioned a number of singers including one time Black Flag vocalist Ron Reyes and worked on material that included the main riff of what would become the Guns N Roses song Rocket Queen. Slash disbanded the group the following year due to their inability to find an adequate lead vocalist, as well as Adler's laziness compared to himself and McKagan. Adler then briefly joined a local band known as Hollywood Rose which featured singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin. in June 1985 Adler joined Guns N Roses which was newly founded by Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Tracii Guns, Ole Beich and Rob Gardner. After the original drummer Gardner quit Adler and Slash joined their former Road Crew bandmate Duff McKagan to complete the line up. They played nightclubs such as the Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy and The Troubadour and opened for larger acts throughout 1985 and 1986, After being scouted by several major record labels the band signed with Geffen Records in March 1986. In July 1987 Guns N Roses released its debut album Appetite for Destruction which to date has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, 18 million of which were in the United States, making it the best selling debut album of all time in the US. In December during a tour with Alice Cooper an intoxicated Adler broke his hand when he punched a streetlight after a barroom brawl Fred Coury of Cinderella was brought in as his substitute for several shows until he recovered. In November 1988 Guns N Roses released GNR Lies which sold over five million copies in the US alone, despite containing only eight tracks four of which were included on the previously released EP Live Like a Suicide. Adler was again absent during a performance at the American Music Awards in January 1989, Don Henley filled in for him on drums. His absence was originally attributed to a case of the flu, but it was later revealed that Adler had been in a drug rehabilitation program at the time. The following October during a show as opening act for The Rolling Stones, Axl Rose threatened to leave the band if certain members of the band did not stop dancing with Mister Brownstone, a reference to their song of the same name about heroin use. Adler was among those who promised to clean up, but he continued to struggle with his addiction.

I got to see Adler's Appetite in 2020 at a small club in Kansas. I wasn't expecting much because I figured it would be an old dried up Rockstar with some nobodies. I was so wrong!!! Even though there were only about 100 people there, they played as if we were VIPs. If I hadn't been looking at them, I would have swore it was GNR. I was up front, right in front of Steven, we locked eyes and he smiled, (my daughter teased me about Steven flirting with me throughout the concert). At the end he walked to the front of the stage, looked right at me and tossed me one of his drumsticks, I'm sure he's probably done that 1,000 times, but it made me so happy. His smile is beautiful.

Nothing against Sorum, but they never sounded as good without Adler. He had a special feel to his playing that made each song have a groove. Even Izzy thought they weren't the same without Adler.

I agree 100%, I know a lot of people, including some GNR members, especially when they 1st picked Sorum up, said that Steve was a terrible technical drummer compared to Sorum & GNR was going to be so much better for it, yeah ok, I did at least hold out hope, but only ever wished for Steve back

Matts a good drummer and I thought thevuse your illusion stuff sounded great with him but he couldn't mimic Steven Adler drum sound for appetite those songs didn't sound right even though I think a healthy Steven who wasn't all drugged up as bad as he was I think that use your illusions would have had a better swing to them with him drumming not as many rolls but Steven never needed a bunch of rolls to make his drumming sound so original the thought he put into beat placement was perfect better than Phil Rudd and it would have been great to hear Steven on The razor's edge even though I loved that drummer I can't think of his name now the bald guy he was great I for that record but Steven Adler he would have more than nailed it it's a shame Axl Rose went and said that on TV and kept him from getting hired by ACDC but Adler was given a chance he was supposed to rejoin them at the Rock and Rio but he couldn't even get cleaned up enough to make it there a lot has came out over the last few years about what really happened and a lot of it was his fault I blamed axel for years and it wasn't his fault and they weren't innocent they were drugged up too but they showed up and they are still able to record the use your illusions and do their jobs Steven couldn't even do that right at the time all the cover bands I ever heard do guns and roses songs some of them are great but they could never get that drumming to sound that way Steven did anybody that says he wasn't all that great I beg to differ that's why they can't make their drums sound like him but I seen and played with a bunch of bands that could do Dave Lombardo and Neil Peart but for some reason the same guys couldn't make Stevens stuff sound right that should be telling he was a little bit more technical than people give him credit for he didn't need a bunch of drum rolls to be a great drummer his cymbal work an beat placement were perfect

Appetite for Destruction one of the most famous greatest rock albums of all time. Every song on this album is so good the band is still touring on this one album. It's mostly what GnR fans want to hear the most. And a lot of people are still making major coins off all of Appetite for Destruction. My point in all of this is a message to Axel,Slash and the rest of the classic line up of GnR give Adler his due for what he did for the band and the music from day one. He may have had his Demons but is responsible for all of Appetite for Destruction to this day. Let's Not Forget

no doubt bro. they did him so dirty.
they kicked him out because he held onto that anger from axl nailing his chick in the studio for the Rocket Queen tracking.
he was doing the same drugs as everyone else.
and NOBODY can tell me that Steven was more messed up than Slash was.
cuz Slash ruined TONS of early shows being too Smacked up to play a whole show.
Dude, Stevens drumming was so great, it was so important to their sound😢
imagine how much better Use Your Illusions woulda been if they kept Steven and didn't use Matt.

I don't know I think people are a little bit too hard on them they did what they had to do but the user illusions out of 30 songs that they threw on their 25 of them were very good songs I juggled them songs around and made three different records out of them that guns n' roses could have released over the next 6 to 8 years and they would have been good all the way to the year 2000 but they threw everything out there too quickly on some of the songs like breakdown could have been better get in the ring is a great song just needs a little bit of lyric change mostly probably a solo where the rants are and my world should have never been thought of there's some great songs on those records I don't care what anybody says I still listen to them records all 4 of them appetite the use yuor illusions and GNR lies and actually I thought the spaghetti incident had a good good six songs on it the only record I can't stand is Chinese democracy it just ain't guns n' roses at all it should have been called the Axl Rose experiment I think people are too hard on them though they did what they had to do at the time they should have got a drummer that mimicked Steven better and kept it closer to that sound cuz I know someone's out there that could drum that stuff perfect to make it sound just like him even though I have yet to see somebody that could and I seen two of the best GNR cover bands out there Steven Adler has the greatest GNR cover band there ever was they sound more like guns n' roses than guns n' roses do

Guns & Roses were still obscure after they released Appetite, the album didn't sell when it released, Poison's Look What The Cat Dragged In was the most popular Sunset Strip release of 1987. What made people take notice of GnR was their appearance in the 1988 Dirty Harry movie The Dead Pool where the band played the victims of a serial killer, the movie's soundtrack also featured Welcome To The Jungle as Dirty Harry's theme. For all you youngsters out there, Dirty Harry was the John Wick of his era, everyone watched his movies, including Rob Liefeld who used the title as his new assassin character's alias in New Mutants #98 in 1991, which was almost Stroker Ace, and now that guy has his own movies. Welcome To The Jungle became everyone's favourite song of 1988 because of Dirty Harry, not MTV. GnR used the money they made from the film to record the part live/part studio 1988 album Lies.

Steven was the reason they sounded so rock early on, and didn't after he was out. It wasn't Izzy. Izzy was a big part of it, but Steven was the main reason. The drummer sets the tone for the entire song, and Steve was a madman. Rock drummer to the core. Without that, the band just didn't follow that line, and became more theatrical sounding. Matt was robotic, which really worked for certain songs, making a more industrial sound, but for a bunch of the Use Your Illusion tracks, it was just more about the song writing and depth within that, than it was about rocking out. Musically and artistically great, but for those who like to rock, a bunch of those songs were flat.

Steve had drug problems, that's true. They all did. Steven was fired because of Axl. He was the only one who got balls to tell him how miserable little piece of shit he and his fucking antics was.
In 1990 Adler was forced to sign a contract. According to it he had to get sober. And then he was forced to do Civil War while he was cold turkey. He told them that he's unable to work but they just didn't care. By then it was already decided to kick him out of the band. The real reason was the accident with Axl's wife, Erin Everly. She got od'd and Axl blamed Steven for it. His addiction was just the casus belli.
Later I saw Adler performing in 92. He played well no signs of anything he was accused by GNR earlier although he was still addicted to drugs. Later even Slash apologized him in his bio.
