- Over half of appeals against Home Office asylum decisions have been successful, Sky News has discovered.
One of those included a convicted sex offender was allowed to stay in the UK because a judge agreed with lawyers that he would be at risk of "mob violence" in Afghanistan for his crimes.
In the next instalment of our Faultlines series, we look at the country's asylum crisis.
Community correspondent Becky Johnson reports from Hull, where hundreds of failed asylum seekers are still living in Britain.
In response to our report a Home Office spokesperson said: “We stand firm on our longstanding policy that those without a right to stay in the UK will be removed.
"Our Illegal Migration Act makes this possible, as people who enter the UK illegally will have their asylum claims and human rights claims declared inadmissible, and they will not be able to make a life here.
“Each asylum application is individually assessed, including decisions on removal of individuals. Where people have previously been refused asylum in the UK, a fresh asylum claim can be made through legal representation.”

Also think about something. They destroy their passport or their ID. They are completely anonymous, they can lie about the nationality, name or age, plus their countries won’t accept them. I think is too late

@@emmajessica46778 not really…. I live next to hotel that is officially “under reconstruction” and same illegals come in and out for more than 2 months….they do everything they can so neighbourhood doesn’t know about it…even website says hotel under reconstruction,booking not available…

Those are new comers with pending applications. Sky news are showing failed asylum seekers who have been here for over 10 years.
The solicitors in good conscience should not be supporting a known sex offender to stay in the country. The law should urgently be changed! They are enabling criminals!

I think all criminals are allowed to a defence by law. However, the laws need to change because they are not protecting the public. By allowing sex offenders to stay here they are putting the general public at risk just because this man would be harmed for his own illegal actions back in his home country. Surely the needs of the many (public) outweighs the needs of the few (asylum seeker) in this case.
Since when did solicitors have any scruples? Many make a lucrative living from launching appeals.

Some of them have better clothes than I do, and I would love a really good smartphone like some of them had. As for the man who's says he's living on the streets, I've been homeless and I was never in such a good state and he has no sleeping bag I know for a fact that soup kitchens help with sleeping bags. It's all given to them from the money and items donated to charity. They also get a small allowance to cover basics. Many work illegally in the cash economy.

Failed asylum seekers should be sent home. The Government needs to sort this problem out. Whatever is wrong with this process must be attended to right away.
If there was no appeal, she would have moved out of the country long time ago. When Other European countries refuse asylum, seekers move on somewhere else. England is too soft. There are many of them claiming asylum under sexuality and when granted they are all of a sudden straight.
The whole system is broken. I am british and i have witness an appeal. Old fashion judge's and the home office lawyers check nothing.
My dad worked in a university for years and he had many students tell him if they didn’t get a visa they would “hit the ground” which means disappear into the illegal system.
why dont they just send them to uganda. they took in 1m refugees last year. its a massive country with a tiny population. just give them the billions we send a year on this and problem fixed. that would be about ten percent of their entire gdp
