If you're a woman trying to keep the value of an engagement ring you should know not to take your case to JJ. You're more likely to get a favorable judgment from a small claims court judge. JJ believes the ring goes back to the party who bought it - whether they broke your ribs for $20 grand or not. As she says "I don't care!" and she means it.
Small claims court should do the same, as well, as engagement rings are considered a "promise" and, if said promise is broken, it goes back to the giver. However, if it was the apology gift that she claims, and not an engagement ring, she should have gotten something either in a text or voicemail from him saying as much. Personally, it looks like an engagement ring, and I wouldn't want to keep something like that from a person with whom I'd had that bad of a breakup. I'd be afraid of doing so, the way she explains her injuries!
If the person broke your ribs...you should report that to the police. Doesn't mean you shouldn't give back the ring. Why you would want something that belonged to your alleged abuser is beyond me.
I never understood the tradition of overpriced promise/engagement/wedding rings. My Husband and I have simple sterling bands made by a silversmith. Less than $100. No wedding either, just us, the Pastor, his wife, and the witnesses. I'd rather the money go towards our home and future.
If that’s your preference that’s your preference. Some people like the tradition and celebration. I feel like it’s a bit sad to go through life without any celebrations. I had a wedding and we bought reasonable rings, definitely was not anywhere near the cost of a downpayment for a house, so it’s not really equivalent. We don’t really take vacations and lots of people do, that would have been closer in price. Some people go overboard in my opinion but that’s their choice too, and their money, so whatever 🤷🏻♀️
