  • Today, I'm going to sit down and swatch every single pencil from the Kalour Professional colored pencil set of 300 COLORED PENCILS. They had initially launched the 240, but now we are up to 300. Are there repeats? Is it even worth it? Let's find out!

I love all my Kalour pencils, I have the pastels and macaron and metallic colored pencils. Plus I own the 240 set, add up all of the extra sets, I have over 300. They're my go to when I use wax based pencils. I have all of them swatched. Took me over 8 hours all totaled.

I have noticed in the Uk, as soon as someone starts to bring attention to a certain set of pencils, especially if they have been cheap before, the price suddenly shoots right up. It has happened many a time on Amazon UK.

@@ColorfullyOptimistic I've heard that if items start to rapidly increase in sales volume, the Amazon algorithms increase prices. It's also been said merchants don't have much say in the matter, and it's hard to get prices brought back down. No idea if it's true.

And and as soon as you like an item on Amazon with a heart the price increases too. So don't put a like heart on the stuff you want to get. I tried it out. Its really true.

I quite like this 300 Kalour set. I don’t like the Prismacolors, I find them too soft and I can’t control them much. I had no problems with swatching the fluorescence. I think I have most budgets and artists grades but these are my favourite budget set.

Kori, over the last three days, I've re-oganised and dry-&-wet re-swatched my motley collection of 75 w/c pencils. As i did so, I kept thinking of you, your 300, and the 3 hours 46.5 minutes it took you - in one sitting. I have always appreciated the work which goes into swatching videos, but by gum, Kori, I have to take my hat off and bow down to your massive effort!
BTW, over 26 years, I've managed to accumulate these 75, from various sources and I did a count today. I have 13 different brands - the result of picking up samples at various art materials events! The majority are Albrecht Durer and Caran D'Ache (Supracolour and Museum). My first set, back in the day was one from WH Smith, a stationers in the uk. These were really good, though I have no idea about lightfastness - it wasn't thought of back in 1996 - but I still have, a few! The second set, I bought at the launch of Derwent's Signature Watercolour pencils range - I bought the full set! I still have and use a lot of those.
The rest have really come about from trying to replace the Signature colours as they ran out, as by that time, Derwent had released their Derwent Watercolour pencils as a replacement, but these were nowhere near as nice to use as the Signature, and to make it worse, the colour names and numbers didn't (and still don't, for the majority) match. I've had to buy some as replacements for the Signatures, but I'm not really a fan - when I can match with Caran D'Ache or Faber Castell, I do!

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic

If I didn't have a channel, I probably would have a small curated set with a few Procolour and Polys mixed in with my Prismas and nothing else, but due to having a channel and always testing this or that, I end up with quite a bit lol

@@ColorfullyOptimistic Looking back on those 300 pencils, Kori, and if you actually had the time between paid job, parenting (including huskies!), running the household and all the extras (!!!) how would you use them? (curiosity is sparking this question!) Or, more to the point, perhaps, how many do you think that you would you actually use?
I can't imagine being confronted with a set of 300 to choose from. I think I'd spend more time trying to decide on which matches what I'm trying to colour than I would actually doing the colouring! I already have this problem with my w/c pencil greens, and there are only 19 of those, and of course, I can never find an exact match, and somehow getting the right colour by mixing is harder, the more choice I have! BTW, I only have that number because of trying to match my Signatures, and failing!
And yet I have painted with a set of 14 watercolours for over 26 years and never had a problem finding & mixing the right colour... 😄
Small disclaimer: when seeing other artists' full sets of colours, I always look with interest at which, and how many have been well-loved, and which and how many are still as they were when they arrived. At these times, the rewind and pause buttons are very useful.... It's absolutely not a criticism, but simply curiosity, as we all have our different favourites of the colours we have!
My own 75 are all different lengths unless they've been part of the current replacement, where they've got too short for even me to use. It's the greens which are most used / been replaced, then the blues. The bright red are the least used which is to be expected of a plein air landscape artist, I think. All the others get used, but bright reds, while great for play (a lot of abstract stuff) or still life, are less useful in landscape, except as mixers.

I'm debating getting these. I have mostly high end colored pencils (Prismacolor Premier, Faber-Castell Polychromos and Goldfaber, Derwent Coloursoft, Drawing and Lightfast, Holbein, and Caran D'Ache Pablo and Luminance) but got a few cheaper pencils (Prismacolor Verithin, Prismacolor Scholar and Pentel Arts). I like to have some cheaper pencils to share with friends and family when they color with me because I don't trust them with my expensive ones lol, but I wanted some that were good. Arteza, Brutfuner, Kalour and Black Widow are the ones I'm looking at, I'm feeling like I'll definitely get the Black Widow and Arteza at some point but I feel like I'll likely hoard those for myself, so I've been eyeing the Kalours for that very reason lol. My little sister has a set of their watercolor pencils and she seems to really like them, I haven't personally used them though. The build quality felt way better to me than I expected given how cheap they are, so I was impressed with that. I've used many budget brands like Crayola and Rose Art and others marketed to children that felt incredibly cheap compared to these, so I think I might just take the plunge and buy them.
Also about your comments onnthe Holbeins, I agree that they're too expensive in the US, I'm hoping as time goes on they'll become cheaper. They're my dream pencil set, I've been wanting them for over a decade now (I somehow came across them online in middle school and I've been dreaming of them since). I bought some open stock and I personally really loved them. I find them to be the perfect love child from Prismacolor Premiers and Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils, they have the best of both worlds, but I can see why some wouldn't like them. Your review actually made me so curious about them that I finally comvinced myself to buy some lol. They have the fun colors, creaminess and opacity of a Prisma with the layer ability and ability to hold a point of a Poly. They're very much smack dab in the middle of a Prisma and a Poly in hardness imo. If you can't afford to buy them and have other perfectly good pencils you probably don't need them lol but I'm now convinced I need a whole set of them and I'm waiting until I have enough money for it rn. Just goes to show that just because two people both like Prismacolor and Polychromos doesn't mean both people will like the Holbeins. It really is entirely a preference.
One set of pencils that you loved that I'd never even tried that I just bought a whole set of bc you loved them so much was the Derwent Drawing and wow those are amazing! I was so impressed with them, they would probably be my number one pencil and steal the spot from Polychromos if they ever expanded the color range. The thick cores, pigmentation, softness, how they blend, everything is just absolutely perfect. I'd buy more of those in a heartbeat if Derwent ever expanded. I was worried I'd regret buying them but figured a 24 set wasn't too bad of a loss if so and I'm now so glad I bought them.
I have a 150 Prismacolor set and I've also asked for the 120 Polychromos for Christmas bc I love the 20-something ones I have so much that some of them are rather tiny lol. I'm a perpetual pencil hoarder which is seriously not good lmao, so I keep buying more and more. Thinking after the Holbeins I'm going to try for a smaller set of the Derwent Lightfast because I really liked those.
On sharpeners - I'm incredibly picky about sharpeners. I love my Dahle 133, I think it's the best sharpener I've evsr purchased. I really like the Faber-Castell hand sharpener, it's a pretty good one and it's been fairly reliable for me. My X-Acto electric sharpener just died on me and I've been mourning the loss bc it was the only sharpener I've ever owned that doesn't eat my Prismacolors. I've tried the Dahle on the Prismacolor Verithins and the Prismacolor Scholars but not the Premiers yet. I've been eyeing the Jarlink for a new electric so I think I'm gonna have to get that one sometime soon since I find it more convenient when I'm coloring, especially when I've got a lot of pencils to sharpen. I tend to put my pencils away unsharpened and so every once in awhile if I've been coloring a lot I'll go through my entire collection and sharpen all of them that need it. I recently did that with the Dahle and it was a lot even with that sharpener, so I certainly see a Jarlink in my future lol.
Anyways, thanks for the swatching video, this set is insane, perhaps a bit overwhelming for me rn, I'm thinking between the 120 and 240 sets are probably better for me since I simply don't have a lot of space for a tin any larger unless I take them out of it, but I like to keep my tins, I dunno why, especially since some of them are inconvenient for me. Idk might just do the 300 because I really like the colors in the set.
Omg Twilight 😭😭😭 I remember when I was like 10 or something my mom's friend was obsessed with them and my mom being a good friend went with her. She thought thr movies were so bad that she bought them to make fun of them later 💀💀💀
