If you want to watch an updated font making tutorial where I show you the EASIEST method I've ever used for creating personalised, handwriting fonts, check out this NEW tutorial here: th-cam.com/video/edkYTG0kRLQ/w-d-xo.html
that's AMAZING Jessica! I also just created an updated and more comprehensive class on this topic over on Creative Fabrica if you're interested in learning more 🥰 www.creativefabrica.com/product/creating-hand-lettered-fonts-with-procreate-calligraphr/ref/1778635/
Thank you so, so, SO much for this! I have used iFontMaker for a long time and always been so frustrated that I can't get flat edges - I could NOT figure it out until you showed how to do this in procreate! You just blew my mind! :)
Glad I could help! I tried fontmaker once and it was SO confusing! I just find this so much easier to create fonts that really resemble my own handwriting style.
Wow! This looks amazing! Works like magic and I love it!! I can’t wait to try it. This will save me so much time given that my personal brand is heavily connected to my lettering. ✨😆💜💜✏️
Firstly i was interested just to make my comics text look a bit neatly (because my hand writing has a problem with different looking letters). But now i want to make fonds both for rus and eng language AND make a different fonts for each of my characters (don’t worry, only for main characters, i have only about 4)
With calligraphr you can build your templates with the characters that you want for specific languages or (if you have a subscription) you can add as many characters as you'd like to a single font which means it can be used more universally. Just have a look through the different character options when you are building your template before you export it and this should help you create exactly what you need :)
So glad you found it useful! I've since updated this tutorial and you can view it here on my channel: th-cam.com/video/teeMJWXJ6V4/w-d-xo.html I also created this tutorial to show an alternative method using an app called fontself: th-cam.com/video/edkYTG0kRLQ/w-d-xo.html
Good morning Laura! Watching from Florida 🇺🇸 🏝 This was an awesome tutorial. Who needs Canva, LOL. By no means am I an interior designer, and I want to make my text uniform. I spend hours attempting to get the perfect letters in my videos, (I handwrite all the pop out captions). Thank you! Cant wait and watch your other videos 🤗
Canva is more of a creation app compared to procreate which is an illustration app... the two are very different. But I am glad that this tutorial was helpful and inspiring for you.
There are so many ways to create fonts, but this is just the way that I've found is the easiest to do and also the easiest for really turning your natural handwriting style into a font. I'm so glad you found it helpful and hope you're having fun creating your own fonts!
I’m sure you could, you would just have to create more options for the ligatures (joins). However I’m not sure it’s the best app for that as you have to create each join combination.
Do you fully own the copyright to your font? If you use it on products you sell? Or does the Caligraphr company still own the software portion of the font?
that's a good question, I honestly don't know the answer to this. The fonts don't save on the calligraphr site so I imagine they don't have any owner ship. I also pay a subscription to have an extended version.
Hi, does anyone know how to print out a list of all characters, including variants and ligatures, that are included in a font created in calligraphr? Thanks.
Within the calligraphy dashboard there are lots of templates that you can build your font template from that show you what characters are traditionally included in a font depending on the region/language. When it comes to ligatures, that's completely open ended on Calligraphr as you choose which ligatures you would like to include yourself. I have an updated tutorial that shows more on that here: th-cam.com/video/teeMJWXJ6V4/w-d-xo.html
hello! I’m having trouble building my font- every time I try to export the preview shows the letters as a box with a x in the middle. Would you have any advice for this ?
Hi Erin! I'm so sorry to hear that's happening. What are you using to create with (iPad or other tablet?) and what are you exporting your font as (file type)? some font formats aren't compatible with windows for example, so this could be the issue. If you're still having trouble I have a new video coming later today with a whole new and SUPER simple method for creating fonts using a different program 💕
I downloaded the template as a PDF but when I go to import it to procreate, I can't find it anywhere. There is no "import file" option, and it's not listed in my files anyway...
Hi Molly. So, the first thing you need to check is where the PDF is saving on your iPad. Usually PDFs will save directly to the downloads folder in your iCloud files but sometimes if you have another app that you open PDFs with (like goodnotes) they might save there. So what you need to do is make sure that your templates save to the files on your iPad and you know what folder they are in. Then for importing into Procreate, once you know where they are in your files, you can tap the 'import' button in the top right of your gallery and select the templates from your files OR you can drag them from your files and drop them into your procreate gallery using split screen or just drag and drop between open apps. hope this helps! 🥰
Thanks for this video. Very helpful. By any chance do you sell your fonts or upload them to a server where other people can download them? I love your fonts, they are fun :)
Hi Rachel, I don't sell my handwriting fonts for branding reasons, but the font I created in this video is for sale from my Happee Shop. You can purchase it here: shop.hellohappee.com/products/happee-blocks-font?_pos=1&_psq=font&_ss=e&_v=1.0
You can use these fonts on any app or program that allows you to import your own fonts. For example I also have these installed on my laptop so I can use them in Word, photoshop or any other program that I open that allows custom fonts.
So glad you found this helpful! Be sure to check out my most recent font tutorial for an updated, even easier method here: th-cam.com/video/edkYTG0kRLQ/w-d-xo.html
This depends on the device you are using Goodnotes on. But the short answer is to save the font file to that device and then import it as a font in goodnotes. I’ve personally not used custom fonts on goodnotes on my iPad before so I’m not sure how to import fonts into it but if you’ve added other custom fonts to goodnotes before just follow the same method using the font file you export from calligraphr
To edit the size and position of the letters you need to play around with the settings before you generate a preview. It's super simple on Calligraphr as they have toggle tools for just this and show you a preview of how it will look
Calligraphr is a browser app; you don't need an iPad to create a font using calligraphr, instead just print out the templates and write directly onto them. Then scan them onto your desktop and upload them to calligraphr to create the font
Hi Lis, I've personally never set the letter spacing to be that low so hadn't experienced that issue. However if you could export the font with 1% spacing and then further reduce the spacing when you use the font - for example when adding text in photoshop, illustrator or procreate you can adjust your text's line spacing and letter spacing further.
@@LauraJaneIllustrations hi Laura! Thanks for you reply. The funny thing is it says in the FAQs you can set it to 0% but I can't get it any lower. Makes me really angry and frustrated since that was the only reason I want to use calligraphr. However. I want to use my font as a font. And don't want to change letter spacing all the time. Is it in one of these Programms possible to safe it then as a new font after changing the spacing? 🤔
@@letteringlis5179 if in the FAQs it says you should be able to get it down to 0% maybe you should reach out to calligraphr customer service? Can I ask why you are trying to set it to 0%? If it's to create a font with joins you may need to look at setting that up separately
@@LauraJaneIllustrations Yeah I tried to contect them several times but didn't get any answers yet. Yes I want to join them. There's not much option in calligraphr for other settings unfortunately.
@@letteringlis5179 to create joins in calligraphr you need to set up ligatures in your font. You create these with a separate template - I cover it a bit more in the updated version of this tutorial but I am planning a full new tutorial on it soon

I understand your point here, however flat edged pens often don't create shapes that are as smooth and curved. I also like to turn the streamline setting way up on my brushes for smoothness and this creates a jitter with blocky brushes.
