The graphics people just probably put extra two digits in front by mistake, so by him casually carrying on, the people watching can still get the weather and a good laugh out of it.

It’s also worth noting that steel comes in various alloys, which all have their own properties, including melting/boiling point. It seems from what I can find that steel alloys seem to melt at higher temperatures than iron, but I’m not sure about boiling points.
Most reporters would have just made an excuse to cut to commercial at that point, but this guy just went with the flow! If I were his boss, I'd give him a raise.
This is, to me, unequivocably, the best televised live moment ever. This man is an improvisational wunderkind, and I can't not crack a smile every time I watch this. His delivery is impeccable, and I dearly hope he's one of the last on-air voices I hear in the event of random cities getting flash-fried.

He's not quite right, but he's actually fairly close in a sense -- that'd be in the right ballpark if they were degrees *C*. (Specifically ,*iron* boils at about 2,750 C, and a couple alloys are only a little higher.) I think he dug the right number out of his brain somewhere and was just wrong on the units.

At 2,960 degrees farenheit, you wouldn't be able to get out while you can because you would burn to death in a total of 2 seconds. I couldn't even imagine such pain, but I do imagine that burning to death at 400 to 500 degrees would be more painful than 2,900 degrees because at 2,900 degrees, you'd burn to death so quickly instantly that there wouldn't be enough time to feel pain from it. At 450 degrees, there would be and it'd be more agonizing than imaginable. Thank God that we live on a planet that will never see temperatures that dangerously high.

At 2,960 degrees farenheit, you wouldn't be able to get out while you can because you would burn to death in a total of 2 seconds. I couldn't even imagine such pain, but I do imagine that burning to death at 400 to 500 degrees would be more painful than 2,900 degrees because at 2,900 degrees, you'd burn to death so quickly instantly that there wouldn't be enough time to feel pain from it. At 450 degrees, there would be and it'd be more agonizing than imaginable. Thank God that we live on a planet that will never see temperatures that dangerously high.
