Thanks for this video you make it so easy to understand I’m a 62 year old woman , my thermostat just broke , quit on me and by watching your video i was able to get my cool air blowing by connecting the wires you specified is is 92 degree here , it will get me till tomorrow when i can go to home depot and get a new thermostat that i till have the guts to instal my self thanks to you !
I watched a few other do-it-yourself thermostat replacement videos but I was left even more dumbfounded than when I first took on this project. Then I played yours and all my questions and concerns were thoroughly addressed. The fact that you took the time and explained not only what wire goes where, but what the function of each wire was, made the whole project crystal clear. And you were the only one to explain why RH and RC should be jumped. Now I'm off to kill the breakers and do the swap. Wish me luck! I'm going in! OK. Project finished! I was a little concerned when the A/C didn't fire up right away, but maybe it just needed a minute or two to acclimate. Now it's working great! All I have left to do is to set the program. That should be simple enough. Thanks for all your help!
Some of the relays have timers in them to protect the components. On heat side they keep the fan running as the heat coils cool off. On compressor side they keep it off so the freon liquid can disperse from the compressor so it doesn't lock up.
Mr Jones you most definitely have saved more than a few lives helping people that are at risk of dying from heat stroke and heart failure ..im out of words and so very very greatful for you coming across this WAS NO ACCIDENT .. ..the lord works in mysterious ways indeed... God bless you and all you do ..ima start crying
Thanks for the video. There was a reference about the internal software that made me realize that the thermostat was default set up for conventional so I switched the setting to heat pump and the entire system worked perfectly. Thanks for saving me the $500 for a repairman.
This is a nice video to guide you through and the real kicker is to talk to this very nice guy (David) to iron out any kinks. Thanks a lot for your help!
Thanks. Watched a dozen videos that didn't help before finding this one. Turned out my thermostat was bad--only way I realized it was by twisting the control wires together as you suggested. I had thought it would be something else because the thermostat is only ~2 years old. Not thrilled with Honeywell, but very grateful to you for posting this video.
I really appreciate this video and how to test the thermostat. My 81 year old Dad has an older Salem Travel Trailer and the thermostat had to be all the way up at 90% to be able to turn on. Today it quit put out heat all together. This video shows me how to test it...Thank you
Thank you so much for this video. My mom lives in Tennessee and she got a new thermostat and wired it wrong and didn't take a picture of how it was. This helps out a whole bunch.
Mister I could give you a big hug. if I hadn't tried ur app I would be cold.my inlaw put me in a thermostat last winter but it never worked.tonight I had my grands over trying to keep house warm with stove but it was still chilly.I tuned to your app hoping to see what I could do to the thermostat put in last winter.i notice a small cardboard between the circuit connection barely visible that said quite remove. I just slid it out an that was the problem.this was something to me an thanks to your video I would still be cold. thanks for helping those that need help like me.
Thank You so much for showing & teaching me how to replace my Thermostat, this was the best video I saw and I looked at a few and they did not go over what wire went where & what they do…
thanks for posting this video! we were freezing! this video showed me my thermostat was bad and saved me a a bunch of money and my wife loves me again!
This helped so much! Got a new thermostat and forgot to take a picture before removing wires and was so lost. you pointing out the jumper piece did the trick. thank you!
Thank you …. I was able to reconnect the wiring on my thermostat for my heat with your helpful video without needing to pay for a service call!! It was not reconnected when moved during a remodel …. so thank you.
my apartment ac would blow heat then ac and was not sure wtf was going on. I watched your vid and opened up the thermostat and the Orange wire and Yellow wire was reverse connected. After I plugged them in the correct connection AC unit is working now. Thanx for the video from 7 years ago. =)
thank you for doing what no one else has done and explain what each wire does. makes it much easier to understand what your doing. in my case c is common i hooked it up to +24 volts instead of common. thank you...
Thanks for the 4 minute refresher on the wiring I've done it before but 15 years don't go along too well don't get along too well with my memory, thank you very much you are very informative ☆☆☆☆☆
Thank you for taking the time to explain some of the basics of thermostats to help the DIYs out there. It would also help to explain that there are small relays in the thermostats that have contacts that can fail after so many repeated cycles of make - break and quite often the cause of the problems discussed that arise over time. Also explaining that the Letter Designations on the terminals correspond to the color of the wire used though that is not always a given in each and every installation. Cheers, Victor
I am very much convinced of this video, and the kind of explanation that you have to say is also very good, and by showing one thing, you give the message about it.
You are a nice guy. Your "bypass" method of testing for bad thermostat is simple and useful. You share a lot of good info with good explanation. Good on ya.
Excellent information provided in this video. Followed the steps and confirmed I had a bad thermostat, which I have now replaced. Everything running now as it should. Thanks for sharing your expertise!!
You deserve every view and subscription you get sir. There is enough to go around for all of us. Wish I was your apprentice i'm in Deltona Florida planning on starting hvac course at Daytona state college this januarry 2019. I was born with one hand but I have my whole arm, want to get a trade to help my family, already a licensed barber and real estate agent. Thank you .
I appreciate the video information and your desire to help those of us who don't know wiring and functioning of the thermostat. I'm trying to figure out which wire will allow me run y thermostat without batteries. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks! I just replaced my old round Honeywell with a new programable thermostat. On my old Thermostat the Blue wire was placed on the Y terminal. When I wired up the new one I put the Blue on the B terminal. No wonder my AC compressor didn't come on. I didn't have a Yellow wire and had no idea that I was leaving the AC compressor with no control wire. Your video showed me just what I needed and taught me a lot. Now the blue wire is back on the new Y terminal and everything is working fine. I don't need a common wire? Thanks again.
+Ron Green I had the same setup myself yesterday. I noticed the blue wire went to the Y terminal on my old thermostat. I just wired the new thermostat the same way the old one was since it worked fine before. I hope David answers our question about the common wire.
David, thank you so much for a very detailed and informative video. I am a DIYer and a friend thinks their thermostat is bad. I am about to go and check it tomorrow and I would typically look for a wire that may have popped out or a bad thermostat cover that may have not engaged (snapped) back on to the base properly, as she removed it and changed the batteries. I hope she put the batteries in correctly ! Thanks again !! Well done.
Best video ever , thank you, you just helped me to hook a thermostat to a window AC , most window ACs are not accurate with the room temperature , after that video which is what I need exactly to know what is those codes refers to, I know now where the power should go in and where to go out based on the temperature you set on the thermostat. Thanks again
Thank you for posting this, it helped me install my new Honeywell digital programmable thermostat in a house that was built in 1953 -- and had two separate thermostats... one for the original oil heat system, and one for the retrofitted air conditioning that was installed in the 80s.. works like a charm!
Thank you your an answered prayer my moms thermostat had been not properly fixed to the wall and got yanked off by bumping against it and she has been struggling with out ac for a few weeks now shes 78yrs old and we cannot afford a professional to come and do this ive been reading everything I can to learn to wire this pro 1.t701 and get it working i don't know what id do if she has a serious deadly irreparable health issue because of the heat thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou. ❤i do have questions. ....
David Jones Mr Jones I have many years experience with auto electrical and took many classes . so in not 100% ignorant just 80% lol OK bought used rv to live in one night big rainstorm came through and filled 12v battery box with water and I experienced lights flickering etc . concluded transformer/battery charger fried out . .. I know I have to replace it but I am currently disabled and on very slim budget. . my question to you is my AC unit blower turns on but no cold air. I think the compressor is not turning on . is there a way to by pass thermostat just for a little while till I can afford new transformer / battery charger and new battery . I will replace them as soon as I am Abel to but the medication the doctors have me on raises my body temperature and I am quite uncomfortable with out AC . I know on a car you can easily do this but it not a car . any advice would help .. I have no voltage at the thermostat but AC blower motor works
I would like to thank you the thermostat you have is exactly like maury they had AA nest I want to get rid of it and put the Honeywell back on great job excellent this is a thing for dummies and I'm a dummy
Thank you. Excellent presentation and very useful. Crazy Glue’s active ingredient is cyanoacrylate. It was originally invented by plastic surgeons. It works!!!
thank you, thank you, for a novice this really helped me to understand the what was doing what in trying to see if the problem was the unit or not... again this was done very well.
Super helpful video. A while back I used it to learn the basic colors and directions for a 1991 mobile home electric heat pump and I was able to complete the thermostat installation. I was hoping to translate a 1953 gas furnace, but inside was TH1 and TH2 AND TR'S and jumper wires and it's a mess, so I think it's time for a professional. Lol
Thanks David. One thing that had me puzzled was that I had Blue wire in the bundle, but the terminals on the Thermostat had no "B", rather there was a terminal marked "C"... I didn't know what C stood for until you explained it, or where I should put the Blue wire. Thanks again!
David - You just saved me a whole lot of trouble with my wife and who knows how many $$. After watching your video and then not being intimidated I pulled off the thermostat cover and there was no jumper to the RC. I jumped it and cool air came on as soon as I put the cover back on! You are the best. Do you have a donation account for coffee/beer contributions? Thanks again.
I needed to replace my thermostat but could not access the electrical panel to turn off the power. I was worried about getting a shock and could not find a proper answer. This video clearly showed that you won't get a shock from 24v ( just don't let the other wires touch the Blue wire). Also finally learned what each wire does

Wonderful video. Thanks for showing the demo parts.
THANK YOU!! You solved our AC Wiring Problem. Many thanks from Canada
You are awesome. After watching this I am not scared to tackle changing my existing Honeywell T8602D2018 thermostat to Honeywell TH9320WF5003 Wi-Fi
Just pay attention

Trying to change mine and notice my BLUE wire is connected to YELLOW terminal??? Do I wire the new thermostat the same, or, put blue to blue?
Thanks for doing your concise easy to understand videos on HVAC, I have learned a great deal from your efforts.

Great Video. Was able to diagnose and fix my problem of heat not blowing with heat pump. The orange wire not in the right spot.

Nicely explained. For people like me, a diagram is very helpful. Thank you
nice job been looking for someone to explain this in layman terms
Thanks for sharing this - I was kind of struggling with some new thermostats and this info definitely did clear things up.

Thanks David. One thing that had me puzzled was that I had Blue wire in the bundle, but the terminals on the Thermostat had no "B", rather there was a terminal marked "C"... I didn't know what C stood for until you explained it, or where I should put the Blue wire. Thanks again!
Thank you. The Honeywell thermo manual said something different. This helped and got us heat. Thank you!
Much appreciated. You are a nice person for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Many thanks.
Thank you for your very clear explanation.

Thank you very much, you did a great job with the video.
